As I was getting into my car at the Lex Park Rite Aid, a guy comes up and gives me this story about needing to get to St. Mary's hospital to see his new baby. Didn't need a ride, just gas money. At least I think that's what he was saying. He was missing a few teeth and his tongue kept getting in his way. Told him I didn't have any cash, which was true. Anyway, about three hours later number one son was at Best Buy and got hit up by the same guy. Same story, same missing teeth and thick tongue. Hadn't made it too far yet.

I got hit up same way, but not same person. A black gal wanted gas money to get "home". I offered to take her to gas station and fill up her car and put it on my card. She declined.
Later I saw her at the 7-11 chatting with some dudes and splitting up cash.
So much for "gas" money.

Panhandling is one of the biggest career choices in this area. I don't see why the police don't do more about it. :(

And the story of choice is needing gas money. If you want to be charitable, do what 235 said and offer to pay for the gas at the counter. Otherwise, your just encouraging it. They do it because it works. If people stop falling for it, they will stop doing it.

Has happened to me, too. I did same thing; offering to give some gas with credit card, and he said no. Now, if someone is really in need, I will have that cynical attitude, but, I truly want to help. Obviously, the test is the credit card/pay at counter vs cash. Then you know, if they say no, it was drug money they were after. So sad. Have lived it with my son, also. All we can do is be optimistic, and hope that our paradise doesn't totally succumb to the evils of the "drug" world.

I work in DC and I am kind of used to this. But not so much at home in Southern Maryland. A few years ago my ex and I were at the 7-11 across from Southern Maryland Hospital. A lady came up with this story about her husband being flown here and that she needed cash to use the payphone to notify her daughter. Something in the story didnt pan out, I'm used to this stuff. Meanwhile my ex was going through his wallet. I told him NOT to. I offered to call her daughter and lend her my cellphone. She insisted on the cash. I handed her the phone even, she said she forgot her daughter's phone number and then moved onto another vehicle in the parking lot. :yay:
I guess it is just the type person I am but I could not imagine asking a stranger for money.

You can practically see these people chasing me around a parking lot because I'd rather them not be able to ask me then feel a little (i know their story probably isn't true but my brain whispers what ifs to me) bad for saying no. I probably look insane. Maybe someone will give me a dollar.

If it were you, and you needed gas, you would take the offer of someone paying at the pump with a card or giving the cash to the clerk inside. But your honest, they are not. They count on that voice to twist you, it's part of the scam. and it is a scam. We have been hearing these stories here for years, and even once has someone reported being taken up on the offer of direct payment for the gas or groceries? Not once. Stand up. You don't have to sound like a di$% when you offer, just explain that it's really the only way you can help them. If they dont take you up on it, you know they are dishonest.
Last way to look at it, this lets you put that little voice to rest. Your way, it never knows, and can nag you.

Some guy wanted me to do something similar to your stories at the McKays on Great Mills Road. This was right IN the store. I could hardly understand him but I do know it was something about using his food stamp card.
I said no and if he followed me I was going straight to the Service Desk. He just walked away.

This lady who is always outside of gas stations...feeds me the same story. One time, i saw her outside of wawa....she told me that she was pregnant and her boyfriend was beating her. She wanted money for a sandwich. I offered to buy her a sandwich...but she wouldnt take it. A few nights ago, I saw her otuside the chinese food restaurant. She told me the SAME story she did a year ago. I guess she's been pregnant and wanting a sandwich for a year now. When I told her I didnt have any money...she begged me...telling me that her electric was out and she needed to buy some candles. WTF. I feel bad for people that fall into these traps. I did before. I gave a guy 5 dollars for gas once...only to watch him go into sheetz and buy a pack of Newports!

Baltimore has a voucher program, were you can buy a booklet of vouchers for McDonalds, and other fast food places. When hit up by a panhandler, you give him the voucher instead of cash. It works, but only when the voucher is used and not sold off for cash.
Saw a dude at the inner harbor the other day get offered a voucher and he declined it, and went on hitting the tourists up for cash with his "I am outta work, need food" hand made card board sign.

That is why I would offer to buy them a sandwich and a drink before I would give them cash, but I would likely be rebuffed so I don't. They'll just go spend it on booze anyway. I see them downtown all the time and and think to myself, "Should I tell them they might have better luck if they panhandled somewhere else besides in front of the liquor store?"

Friend of mine lives in a nice subdivision, maybe 20-30 houses, nothing under say $350K, even in today's market. Nice white fence out front where it fronts 235. He reports updates from the HOA, seems they get a lot of attention from mobile panhandlers, shady meatsellers, thieves, and assorted ne'er-do-wells.
Makes me happy our little street has nothing on the main drag but the sign. And the driveways make it so you cant see the houses very well. :)

Actually, I got the sob story from someone at a gas station who didn't have enough gas to get home. I paid the clerk $5 and everybody was happy. Maybe it was legit, maybe not, but I figured if it was a scam they'd have rejected it.
Woman in a car at Charlotte Hall Food lion had a boy about 8-10 going person to person and car to car asking for money so they could buy gas to go see grandma in hospital, they had no clue what hospital but it was funny she had enough gas to keep the car running so she did not get hot and move spot to spot so they did not see him running any money back to the car.

This should be a crime, especially when they start targeting young kids. I mean what's the harm in calling the non-emergency number and reporting it. If you do that and its not a crime then no harm done right?

I don't remember how long ago it was; the WaWa on GMR was still open.
A little "endowed", dark-haired thing in high heels, tight jeans and a barely there top walks up to me and asks me if I could help her with her ATM/debit card; whatever it was. I go with her to the ATM in the store and say, 'Okay, now enter your PIN.' She enters something and tells me it didn't work. 'Could you give me a ride to so-and-so, so I can get some money?

(a) the phrase and its euphemistic variants date back at least to 1903; (b) said variants replace "####house" with switch shanty, schoolhouse, slaughterhouse, or backhouse, among others; and (c) all were originally--and more sensibly--applied to men of solid or powerful build. When said of women, one 1938 source notes, the phrase usually meant a "heavy, cloddish, sexually unappetizing female."
