Motorcycle Strikes Deer, Rider Walks Away | Southern Maryland News Net (http://smnewsnet.com/archives/16998)
However... is it really necessary to block the entire road for one bike off in the grass? Deer left the scene.

Can't you get in trouble for leaving the scene of an accident?

Deer was probably drinking and didn't want to be caught for that.

Deer will drink beer with great enjoyment.
I put a bowl of beer out one night for them, then watched. The actually started pushing each other out of the way to get at the beer, and there was an equally full bowl of water right next to it.
A six pack of rot beer was gone in a matter of minutes.
really good breeding that year as I remember.

There should be a forum somewhere for people who've been in deer/bike 'incursions'. I would LOVE to hear the rider describe what happened, what he did, what the deer did.
There is knowledge there.

Deer, much like celebrities, do not have the time to stand around waiting for law enforcement after an accident. Sheeh- I thought everyone knew THAT.

Out of all the riding I did in my younger days
I had a rabbit jump into the front wheel of my 550LTD, ( that was a nasty mess, he somehow made it to a point that the wheel actually cut him in half, I almost dropped the bike and I had rabbit guts hanging off of me. Yes, I stopped on the side and got rid of my lunch.
then there was the seagull, 44 east bound heading to Virginia Beach (home at the time) I was on my Voyager coming up on the toll booth, 55~60 mph and a seagull flew into my chest. I have no clue how I kept the bike up on that one, it actually kicked me back and pulled my hands off of the bars, face shield cracked, chest was bleeding and ended up bruised for a few weeks after that. Maybe more than just a t-shirt would have been in order that day?

I'm guessing there are probably a few that, after there bowels have been voided, wish they were in their cage at that very moment.

What bikers may learn about deer and some sort of idea on how to try and react would be useful information, benefit of others experiences, for being in a car as well.

About 7 years ago, I was riding my dirt bike on the road and was doing about 60 MPH. Deer jumped the guardrail and I t-boned it, split it in half. Unfortunately, it almost did me in (internal bleeding, blew out right knee, destroyed right thumb to the point that they were considering amputating it that night, broke right wrist, crushed several bones in left wrist, road rash all over). I did get a nice helicopter ride out of it though.

It's been my experience that it's not the deer you see on the side of the road that ruins your day, it's the one that appears out of nowhere as it flies through your windshield. There is not much reaction time.

So, what do you remember? Zero time to react? Didn't detect him at all in your peripheral vision? Anything you think you could have done?

Yup, it all happened mad quick and I pretty much froze. Locked up both tires (which does nothing, btw) and just slammed into it.

Yea. I know. I was incredibly lucky. One of the ladies in the ER who were taking care of me when I arrived at the hospital kept coming back to see if I lived and to see how I was doing. After I was in the clear, she told me that she had seen over a dozen people come in after hitting deer on bikes, and I was the only one who lived.

Well, I can tell you a lot since I remember everything. I never lost consciousness until they put me down at the hospital.
The issue was, I was 18 and on a dirt bike. I had zero road experience besides riding this particular stretch of road. Bit of background - Where we rode was right by a Pepco plant. So, Pepco bought up hundreds of acres surrounding it and built a ~2 mile private road to get to the plant. This is where we would race our bikes and quads, and we had TONS of trails throughout the woods.
Anyway, I'm racing my buddy, who was riding my quad. I had just done a bunch of work on my bike and was going for a quick ride before I headed over to the girlfriend's house. Because it was a quick ride, I threw on just a helmet (unbuckled), MX gloves, a hoodie, jeans, and skate shoes.
I was hitting it hard when I saw a deer bolt out of the woods. I was super close to the deer, and freaked out. I immediately hit both front and rear brakes and locked up the tires. Didn't try to swerve, didn't do front only, didn't release and re-apply when the front tire locked up. Just slid straight into the deer and split the F'er in half. When I was skidding, I was standing up (to try and throw my weight backwards). So, my arms were locked. When I hit the deer, I went over the handlebars and started the fun asphalt tumble. Helmet came off because I never even buckled it, but absorbed the major impact on the ground. I still broke my nose though. My right knee was destroyed by the road (I actually had road rash through my kneecap).
I got up and started running towards my bike when my knee went out and I fell down. My buddy who was on my quad ended up going into the guardrail to keep from running me over, but he lucked out. He tumbled along the grass between the guardrail and the road and was fine. He did total my quad though. Bent the frame. :(
Anyway, I kinda laid on the ground while my buddy called my mom's cell and then my dad's cell. No answer, and he was freaking out. By that time, we both realized how jacked up I really was and he called 911. Fire chief was first on site, since he lived like 3 minutes away from where I cased the bike. He called in the chopper and I got air-lifted to Suburban Hospital.
Lessons learned? It was a freak accident and I was a stupid kid. I was on dirt-only tires, on a dirt bike, and I was opening it up on a road right next to the woods. Reality is, I would probably do it again. But I also now have road experience. I know how to react to things like that. I know to attempt to swerve. I know to use front brake only. I know to release and re-apply front brake. However, the bottom line is, I was young and had zero experience riding on the road. I'm still young and have slightly more than zero experience riding on the road, but I do think that I will react a bit better next time. I'm also a lot more hesitant to open it up or go balls-to-the-wall when I'm next to anything that can hide danger. Like the woods.
Oh, and I freakin' HATE deer now.
