Lets say someone new just got hired at your job. She got this new job because one of her family members had health issues for a while..and she had to quit her other job to take care of them. Anywho, you find out from one of your close friends that this is NOT the case.... the new employee actually got fired from her other job. What would you do? Would you tell your boss/manager that you heard the employee got fired from their other job? That they lied straight to their new bosses face? Or would you leave it alone?

Leave it alone. Sometimes the truth comes out, and sometimes keeping quiet allows someone to start over and become a brilliant and popular asset and co-worker. The Golden Rule applies.

So you found out from another person that some one may have lied to get a job? Do you have direct knowledge that the person lied? And does their lie impact you proffesionally? Leave it alone, unless it directly affects you, its none of your business.

Woudlnt your boss have done a resume check of their previous employment before making a decision to hire?

I would stay out of it. As long as it dosent impact you and how you do your job, its really none of your business. :huggy: I could be wrong, but it sounds like you might not like the new employee for other reasons though that you are not disclosing

Some places, like where I work now. They are not allowed to say anything on a reference other than the dates you were hired and last day employed. Dates only. As a result, I save copies of my evaluations in case I need to look elsewhere. :yay:

More like she is afraid that someone will rat her out and she is trying to figure out how much time she may have left at her current job.

You would think she might have left that little detail out of "references".

i heard this info from a pretty reliable source. She also has been posting things on a social network bashing her new co workers...calling them #####es and such....not very professional. She hasn't come at me personally, so I have no problem with her. Just don't think she is professional.

I'd let her dig her own grave, which she will most likely do if she's bashing new co-workers, & I'd stay out of it.

Are they #####es? How has everyone been treating the new kid on the block? Sometimes people aren't very professional at work, either. Just a thought. I'd still mind my own business, so I don't have to worry about being called on the carpet when the #### hits the fan.

If she is that bad, she'll get caught in the act. If she isnt qualified for the position, that will make itself evident to those in charge. I would stay clear of her though, dont want to be associated with someone like that in the workplace.

I was thinking something like that. Stay out of the "who struck John" and you will find things will work out how they are supposed to work out. That stuff is work "static", just do your job and ignore the stuff around you. :huggy:

How is it any of your business? How does it affect you and your life?
In several ways, first as a co-worker you want someone who is honest and someone you can count on to keep up their end. As an concerned employee of company X you don't want to see someone hired that could have a negative effect on your company acquiring business. Cause in the end, both affect your paycheck.
Woudlnt your boss have done a resume check of their previous employment before making a decision to hire?
Firings are rare and negative referrals even rarer. Former employers don't want to open themselves up to a lawsuit. Whether they are right or wrong, defending yourself in court costs money. If you do follow up with previous employers you either get a nice recommendaton or silence - silence is in fact a negative referral.
Then again, some employers just don't check out / verify resumes and references.

Thank you to everyone for the good advice. Except Baja because he's an ass. I will not worry about the situation...because you're right...she will dig her own grave. I will let it play out how it's supposed to. It just is sad to see someone who lied and such...get the job, when there are hard working, honest people out there who wouldve appreicated this job.

:huggy: Sounds like you were trying to get someone else in that same position but were denied. :huggy: You don't know all the circumstances involved in her termination. :huggyL Maybe she was missing so much time taking care of a sick family member (rides to appts, hospital visits, picking up meds, caring for, etc) she ended up getting terminated.

I've been in that position before, Mom was in the WHC for two months, I left work early just about everyday to pick my father up and take him to the hospital. When my mother passed, I had to take off or leave early quite a bit to take my father to Dr.s appt, hospital, etc. Thank God I had very understanding bosses at the time or I'm sure I would've lost my job.

Many employers will give consideration for that kind of thing; and should they require documented proof that that is why you have to take time off that way, you can provide Dr.'s office receipt's etc.. I work with a guy in his late 50's whose Mother lives in PA. He takes a few work days off almost every week, and management ; but he is a little higher on the proverbial "food chain" than I am too, so.....

Why would you do this?
IMHO it falls under the "gossip" thing, but more or less normal talk amongst friends and former co-workers.
It's a small community - simple conversation, say yuu have a good friend, or former co-worker who works for Peggy Sue's former employer. The conversation might go like this
"Hey, we just hired Peggy Sue, shame that they let her go because her mama was sick. Guess her mama is alright now" ...
The ... being your friend doing the 'WHAT THE F are you TALKING ABOUT - her mama wasn't sick, they just fired her lame ass.
In my industry it's not unheard of for employees to use their network to check someone out. Managment doesn't do it, they usually go on the resume and references - both supplied by the person looking for the job. But if I know someone who worked with the person, I'd call and ask for the real scoop - is this guy really a hot shot engineer or what? Does he know his ####?
I don't care what my employer is paying the guy, but if he's working on my project, I want to know what I can expect or worse, what to look out for.
Now rating out a liar is another question. But that's basically what the person is, a liar. They told a fib to get the job.

I'm new to this job and people are talking about me :gossip: some feel the need to do background-like checks and also post threads about me on an internet forum. My past has nothing to do with them. They dont know the entire story and yet are jumping to disparaging conclusions at an alarming rate. They have already made up their minds I'm dishonest and seem to have a chip on their shoulder. Its all at a job that I just started and had high hopes for. :frown: I'm surrounded by busybodies. What would you do?

2. Mind your own business.

:TrueThat:... boss may even look down at her for reporting her "dirt" and may come out looking like an instigator or someone disgruntled. The idea is to let your boss know that you are NOT gossipy. You can't TRUST gossipy employees. Her reporting it looks like she's right up there in the thick of things.

I feel your pain, as I too was stuck in a simular situation a couple of times. It's SO tempting to go to the Boss, and tell them everything you know. I did warn my Boss, who was considering an Employee that I knew personally, not to hire them, but they did anyway. Eventually that Person DID dig their own Grave, and they were out the door. So just wait it out. If she is a POS, the Managers will know, and HOPEFULLY let her go before her 3 months is up. It's hard on you, and I know what you are going through. But keep in mind, that she may end up being a Shining Star, and maybe even a Friend in the future.
