DNC? No Thanks - The Daily (http://www.thedaily.com/page/2012/06/21/web-news-utah-rep-skipping-dnc/)
This is starting to look like a movement ala "Alice's Restaurant."
Add yet another vulnerable lawmaker to the growing list of Democrats who plan on skipping the party’s convention: Utah Rep. Jim Matheson told The Daily today that he won't be going to Charlotte, North Carolina, in early September, where the president will formally receive the Democratic nomination for a second term.
"I'll be spending my time this summer and fall doing my job in Congress and visiting with and listening to people in Utah," Matheson said. "I won't be traveling to North Carolina."
No Democratic incumbent in the House occupies a more Republican-friendly district than Matheson, who is facing a tough reelection fight against Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love.
Matheson's decision to skip the Democratic National Convention now makes at least seven prominent officials who are opting out, after The Daily reported yesterday that New York Reps. Kathy Hochul and Bill Owens will also stay home.
For Democrats in conservative-leaning districts and states, skipping President Obama's re-nomination party is an easy way to claim some independence and distance from the president.
