Someone had F*#ked up again I think. 40 minutes from base to the bridge. There should be a law that who ever creates the back up should have to do some sort of community service.

Quit complaining and just kill time driving up and down that nice, new Great Mills Rd until traffic clears up.

Damn, that does suck, I almost hit double digits on my commute home, but then I did take a detour though Lancaster Park to talk to my son..........

I was going to post about the same traffic but with a little twist. Had to deal with the long wait, people on cell phones, others using the right turn lane as a sprint lane around those of us waiting patiently, the lack of turn signals, tail gaters and on and on. after being laid off for fifteen months it sure is nice to be sitting in traffic again. Just sayin.

Yeah, it did seem a bit more backed up yesterday. The mess up had made its way to Chancellor's/San Souci by the time I reached it. As far as I know, nothing was wrong......no accidents that I know of...

Say you're in one of the rush hour clusters creeping along and somebody cuts you off but takes a corner of your car with him/her. Who's at fault?

That was my point Vince, you can only be cut off if you let yourself be, it's a bluff. Get bluffed, your own fault. I agree with you, even though my car is only six years old.
Dee, if you are in the lane, and they impact you, I think it would be them at fault, of course all officialdom would tell you it's not worth it, just yield, but that how we ended up where we are, with hordes of azzholes doing whatever they want.

Since I got my '12 last month, I've noticed that the swivel that my head sits on when I'm driving moves a lot more now. I guess, for the most part, high speed impacts are fewer these days; or is the lack of them during the week made up for on the weekends? Not that that is a good thing.

The problem with 'just yield' is, even in stop-n-go traffic, somebody can pull in front of you before you can say "Oh, S***!" This is usually caused by people not checking their mirrors and turing their ***n heads before they change lanes. The proper method is, signal intention, check rearview, check side view, turn head to check blind spot, THEN ease over; which many do not do. Right? That was somewhere in the driver's ed material.

That takes too much time. I don't do all of it. I skip rear and side mirrors and just look over my shoulder. If it is clear, I signal and then change lanes....easy peasy. But, during heavy traffic, I tend not to change lanes anyway
I will note that at the higher speeds, in any traffic, I use my mirrors.
There was a truck in the merge lane this morning...stopped. 1/2 mile of merge lane and this driver is stopped. Merging is a lost art these days.

Well, many folks just don't know how. The other side of that is, it's a rare thing anymore to see somebody let somebody else into the flow; prime example, again, GMR and Route 5; including the bypass by SHEETZ. I was there yesterday afternoon pulling onto 5 after the red light started blinking. ONE guy stopped and waved me in; no, he didn't have to; but it's that courtesy thing.

True. I've seen the same thing. Folks will see my merging blinker, "wake up", and close the distance I was moving to fill. I'll accelerate to the person in front of them and merge. The ironic thing, I suspect that these are the same drivers that will sit, stopped, in the merge waiting for a mile of nobody before embarking on their trip.
Merging at slower speeds is about courtesy and people just being nice. I usually make room for one person to merge in front of me at each light, but just one. It is up to the person behind me if they wish to make space for another.

EDIT FOR CLARITY. The fisrt para below refers to the Rt235 onto Rt4 intersection, the second covers the GMR/Rt 5 intersection. Two different places, two different situations.
Only if you allow a gap larger than say 1/2 a car, and in stop and go, that's an invitation to the azzholes, like blood to a shark. This is where we swerve into Boston driving, where each man/woman is an island, all mans hands are turned against you. Now, keep in mind, these techniques are only for use in extreme circumstances, like the turn lane bandits, both those who use it as a passing lane farther south, and those who wait til the end to try and sneak. And the last minute folks, they might not be inimical, just folks who dont know.....rare, but possible. If you leave a larger gap, you are guilty of not paying close enough attention to the vehicle ahead of you:smack: (A gentle one)
As for the Rt 5 thing, you are right, when you have a flashing red, nobody has to let you in. And it is the courteous thing to do so. Thank the azzholes who abuse that courtesy by coming over from GMR prior to Sheetz, they have spoiled it for the folks coming out of Sheetz. Thats who that is intended for, not lazy bastages who cant wait like us mere mortals. Me, I do let folks through there, because it's almost impossible to tell the azzholes from the folks simply exiting Sheetz.

To be fair, A-holes block the Shady Mile Drive intersection in the left lane. I don't go over the bridge after work very often, but the last time I did, I couldn't get in the turn lane until past the Target light because people decided to get into the turn lane and block the intersection prior to Shady Mile. I tried to get over as soon as I went through the intersection but people wouldn't let me...so I had to drive up to the light and merge in.

And there's another aspect of the problem. The length of the dedicated turn lane for Rt 4 north isnt adequate. Only solution, and it's a half-assed one, but that's all you're gonna get til they add more lanes to the bridge, is to add another turn lane out on 235 from Shady Mile on, and make the turn onto 4 a two lane also, and keep the dual lane thing going say 3/4 of the way to the brdige, letting those shake int one lane as they approach. Sort of kicks the ball down-field, but it does get the traffic off 235.

SHA owns adequate right of way to make Rt. 4 two lanes all the way to the bridge. That would get the traffic off of 235 except in the worst cases. Proper signing and a mandated alternate merge at the bridge might help, but I'm not sure if we can actually rely on people waiting their turn or being polite.
If they ever do replace the bridge they'll need to widen 4 anyway. Why wait?

Yesterday I stopped at SHEETZ on GMR/Route 5. When I left, I went to the blinking red light. Somebody actually let me in. I made sure there was eye contact; the guy waved me in. I gave the "thank you wave" and proceeded.
You said 'but just one'; but how many times has somebody cut you off, then honked at you and given you a dirty look because you didn't let THEM in too?

Can't say I've had that happen to me.
But, if some self-absorbed, pompous prick decided to that.....I'd just continue on with my commute. I've got room to help one other driver at a time, not two. In my mind, this is out of courtesy to the people behind me.

Too bad for them, don't let selfish people trouble you or choose your course of action. The unspoken rule is one opening per, you can see this in practice every day, if someone doesn't get that, I wold surmise they are the same sorts of people who cut over before Sheetz trying to get ahead, and are therefore lucky they are not being drug out of their cars and shot, freeing up air for those less selfish than themselves.

If those two miles worth of douchebags would stop throwing the block on people trying to merge in once in a while nobody would have to do that.
Part of the problem is that there are far too many people who will deliberately pass all the cars and then try to force their way into the front resulting in holding everyone up. What do you do? Let the impatient douchebag in and reward their selfishness or not let them in and hold up the lane they are blocking.
The same thing happens on those sections of 5 that have a third lane for 1/4 mile (stupid design) and people will shoot around everyone and try to force their way into the front which also causes everyone else to slow down and result in more of a holdup than if they didn't *have* to get to the front and force their way in when the lane ends while passing other openings. People are @**holes.
