If there was one down here, would you shop there regularly?
Seriously, if your answer is, "Hell no, why would I pay the higher prices??" do say so. To me the extra you pay is for the entertainment factor and the enormous selection of specialty items, but I know not everyone feels the same.
I'm just curious if there's a market for a WF or even a Wegman's in this general area so I don't have to drive all the way to Annapolis.

Wouldn't do the majority of my shopping there but would probably buy things like meat and stuff I cant get at Walmart there. Why pay twice as much for a box of kraft mac and cheese?

I would prefer a Wegmans to WF. I find they have a better selection and pricing. But would take a WF over what we have now.
I find myself spending one entire weeked day shopping at 3 or 4 store locations to get all of our grocery needs met, which I find ridiculous!

Yes I would, but I think they'll suffer from the same setbacks as the local restaurants, they have to use the same pool of people to staff it.

Where's "down here"? I would most definitely shop at a WF! But I would love it if I didn't have to drive to Waldorf to do it (so any chance in St. Mary's or Northern Calvert???)

If I was single and only shopping for one, I would probably do the majority of my shopping at a WF or Wegman's because I too enjoy walking the stores and browsing the variety of stuff they have to offer that no ordinary grocery store does.
But because I shop and cook for a family of 4 and sometimes 5 that does not appreciate variety or odd things I would not ordinarily do the bulk of my shopping there even if I had one around the corner.

Maybe a group of forumites can look into incorporating and creating a WF type experience in the supposedly soon to be vacated McKays in Charlotte Hall (or another vacated Grocery Store). Just sayin'

WF is closer to Wegman's than Trader Joe's. I like TJ but I think of it as a specialty store, not a regular grocery store.

Do we NEED one? no.
Do we WANT one? Probably.
Would I consistently shop at one? No.
Would I periodically shop at one? Probably.
I love going to Whole Foods for the freshness, the variety, and abundance of wonderful foods.
Having said that, if money were no object, I'd shop there exclusively. But as a one-income household, I can't afford to shop there.
But ya' know what....the McKay's on Great Mills Road has every item that I've ever needed that I've not been able to find at a more affordable grocery store (WalMart, Giant, Food Lion, PaxRiver Commisary, etc.). If I can't find my item at the lower priced place, I'll go to McKay's. If McKay's doesn't have it, then I adjust my menu to make something that requires easy-to-get ingredients.

Gotta be real careful buying at McKays. I have seen the same box sitting on the shelf so long that the colors are completely faded from the overhead lights. Many times I've picked something up and found it WAY past expiration.

I would LOVEEEE to have a Whole Foods or Trader Joe's close by. Would I shop at them exclusively? No, especially since I can save a fortune using the commissary on base. However, there are particular items that my family enjoys and that I can't get anywhere else.
Of course a Trader Joe's with WINE in it would be nice, so I wouldn't have go to Virginia to stock up on TJ wines.

We have had "Whole Foods" down here all our lives.
Fresh veggies from the numerous stands, our personal gardens, not to mention what the Amish always have.
The best meat from the 4H'ers at the county fairs and what our local farmers, friends and family sell.
Wild seafood, fresh caught and sold by our local waterman. Not to mention, what you can catch and harvest yourself.
Wild game, deer, turkeys, ducks and geese.
You do not need "Whole Foods" just look around.

I liked Whole Foods for certain things, but I wouldn't shop there anywhere near what would be called "regularly." Honestly, I can't see it really making it here. Trader Joes would be better for this market, and I used shop there probably once a week. And yes, if they sold wine that would be a big plus. I was lucky enough to shop the one in Alexandria after going to check out the Space Shuttle. I was in my glory

Not a big fan of Whole Foods - every one I've ever been in is dirty. And smells funny and is over priced. I like their cheese selection, and the deli is nice when I'm shopping for something to eat during my lunch hour - but on the whole, I think I can do better somewhere else. If there was one closer to home, I'd go infrequently - certainly not enough to keep one open.

Are you sure you're thinking of Whole Foods and not some other grocery? WF in Annapolis is extremely clean and attractive, smells like bakery items except for over by the hot food section, where it smells like ribs and chicken.
Which one do you go to?

Where can I get a Frenched rack of lamb? How about a dry aged steak? I'm sorry, but I made the mistake of asking those questions one time about 20 years ago in SOMD. The meat around here is far from USDA Prime or Choice, except for BJ's. As for real butchers, SOMD ain't got none. Just glorified meat cutters. Produce, except for the fresh local sources, could use a lot of work. Try getting lemons or tomatos in January around here...pretty rough! As little as a month ago, I had to explain what Andouille sausage was to alleged butcher at McKay's in CH. Cuumoon people, at least watch the Food Channel, if you're business is...well food!

I agree with your perspective, however there is a growing contingent of people down here that are either not interested in stocking their own food pantry because of either not having the time or the know-how(and no desire to learn). I feel sorry for those types
I am "allowed" to hunt and fish according to my g/f, but I have to hide my nature's bounty from her until it is ready for the kitchen. She will not eat anything that I bring home from a field or boat if she sees it as it was when caught.

I absolutely love shopping at WF and I miss Wegmans from when I lived in Buffalo (they were everywhere up there). I'd probably prefer Wegmans for normal/weekly shopping but I'd shop WF weekly as well if they were here. I've been wanting to get up to WH for the last 2 months and just haven't found a convenient time to make the trip. If there was a Wegmans here I'd never step foot in Giant or Safeway again.

Wegmans started out in Rochester, NY many years ago as a Mom & Pop produce stand. To this day, they always try to purchase local produce and support farmers in their community.
