How many was it rated for?
Doesn't say, but common sense would dictate a lower number, maybe ten at the most.

My 21 footer was rated for 8.

27 people sounds like a lot for a boat that size.
But you know what? Not only the boat owner but all the passengers felt the need to take their chances. So hopefully they had a good time before they dumped over.
I'm surprised (or not) that the kids were the ones that died. #1, they should have been wearing life jackets; and #2, typically their adult(s) will see to them first.

Article says maybe 10. It must have been really crowded and top heavy.

Especially if they mostly went over to one side.
Not to downplay the event, but we used to 'play' like that in my sailboat that was pretty darn hard to capsize. I'd poke my buddy, give him a wink, and then say, "OH LOOK OVER THERE!" and lean to one side of the boat. Of course everyone else did too and got the mast to strike the water once... Never lost anyone overboard tho.
my 24 is rated 12.
no clue where you would put them, but I guess thats not the point.

My Uncle & Grandmother live across the street from one of the victims. They've been getting bombarded all day by reporters to give a statement. Apparently the 3 children were in the cabin when the boat suddenly started to sink. Life vests or not, they were trapped. But why the hell they felt the need to cram all those people on a boat that size, I'll never understand. My uncle thinks all the kids are related, my heart breaks for their family. :bawl:

According to one article I read, the boat was rated for 15 max.
This is just so sad. Sending out thoughts & prayers.

Driver is blaming it on a wave. Sounds like he had no idea what he was doing.

Seems to me from my days taking the Captains course that he would have required a Captain's license to take that many out.
I just referenced my Chapmans. While it was not really a 'passenger for hire' cruise, he could be fined for it anyway due to a wording in the Commercial Operations section.
1. When the boat owner invites guests aboard and one or more of them brings a gift of food or drink to be used on the trip
2. Where the cruise guest takes the skipper ashore for dinner and entertainment.
3. Where during a cruise one of the guests aboard buys fuel, or some similar action.
4. If there is a pre-arranged plan or agreement in advance that the guests are to pay their proportionate share, or any specific amount, of the cruise expenses.
I can see where 1, 2 and 4 might apply, and if so, then it becomes a cruise for hire, and in that light, he now requires a Captain's License for more than 6 passengers.

so if you pay for some of the Fuel - now it is a boat for hire

He'd never owned or driven a boat in his life. He had a wife and two young kids. He got offended when I told him this was not a boat he wanted to start with.
Wanted to come down (he too was from NY) and have me spend 2 days on the water showing him the ropes. I told him no and he was pissed.

The FOX article said 60' of water.
Newsday reported that up to 27 people were aboard the 34-foot Silverton to watch the fireworks. The boat is resting in 60-to70-feet of water and authorities are working on its recovery.

Thanks for sharing that info; it sickened me when I heard about it.
It's really so sad. I grew up there, boating in those same waters every weekend with my Dad and later on with friends as we got old enough to own our own boats. The reporters still won't leave these poor people alone, news van after news van continuously pulling up to their house. God, let them mourn the loss of their child in peace!
Even worse, this happened 7/4 and one of the victims would have turned 8 on 7/6. Instead of gathering for a birthday party, the loved ones had to gather for a funeral. :bawl:
The boat was clearly overcrowded and I can attest to the fact that once the fireworks end........tons of idiots make a mad dash to get outta there, causing ridiculously huge wakes. I still have to say that had that boat not been so packed with people, it probably wouldn't have tipped/sank and those innocent children would still be alive. As a parent, I wouldn't have gotten on the boat with my son. Clearly it was way too packed, it's basic common sense. So although I feel the boat owner really screwed up, I also feel everyone is responsible to protect their own kids.

Another one in the news, but with a better ending. 5 people in a 7 foot paddle boat at night 1/4 mile offshore capsized. 3 of the 5 were wearing PFDs, but still...way overloaded. And it was off Long Island again.
Maybe whatever is in the water that makes good bagels also makes people stupid.

I only allow a mximum of 10 persons total on our 32' Marinette...which is very similar in layout and size to the Silverton.
My guess is that the flybridge area was packed as full as possible with people as well as the forward cabin top and foredeck being loaded. A recipe for a very rapid capsize event.

Certainly, it is up to you who you chose to sell your stuff to but, if you actually had concern for their safety, maybe it would have been better if you did sell it to them and charge the guy for your time to get him up to speed.
A. You know the boat.
B. You cared enough to be concerned that they were noob's
C. You'd know best his weakness's and where he'd get in trouble quickest until he gained experience.
D. If he's determined to get too much boat, whomever sells to him isn't gonna care.
