ALL - If you have young children and you have any curtain cords hanging anywhere in your house, pull them up out of reaching distance.

I received some tragic news that my friend's 3-year-old niece was found dead with a curtain cord around her neck. :frown:

No parent should ever have to experience this kind of pain. I am so devastated for the whole family. :bawl:

Horrible!

I do know they've been preaching this for many, many years and for some reason it's still happening. So very sad.

When my Brother and I were growing up, M&D had curtains in the living room; but the cord was attached to a pulley that was anchored to the floor, so it was taut; no chance of that happening.
Why they are not still made that way makes me wonder.

Unfortunately there are alot of people out there that do not understand how to shorten the cords. I think there should be more specific directions enclosed with the blinds when they are purchased. My sister in law put a slip knot in hers to keep them up higher but it almost just made it worse. My nephew was staandnding in a chair and sliped and becasue of the knot it made the perfect loop to catch him around the neck. Fortunate for us my brother saw it happen and ran and saved him. They really need to be closed and then the strings be cut and retied. Sorry for any typos but youngest decided to put her two cents in and I really do not feel like proof reading.

Wasn't there a celebrity whose child passed away from an accident like this a few years back?

They make a safety thing you put on the cords and it rolls them up inside so this doesn't happen.

We had that, too. Thought it made them safe. Then my dog tried to jump at the window right through these "taut" chords and nearly choked to death before I could get him extracted. Cord has now been cut short and removed from that pulley.

I remember reading about a celebrity's child who got strangled by the cord from a treadmill or elliptical. Another good PSA - any cord could be deadly to a small child.

Yes, some of my friends use them and they work great. We have valances throughout most of the house, no cords. In the bedrooms we have regular curtains without cords, we just pull them apart to open them. I was that slightly paranoid first time Mom who childproofed pretty well.

So sorry, I cant imagine what the poor family is going thru. When my daughter and granddaughter stayed with us for a few weeks, I cut all the curtain and blinds cords. I heard it about happening to another child. Didnt want to chance it.

If I am remembering correctly it was a child of Mike Tysons. It happened around the time "The Hangover" came out.

Or you just don't tie the two strings together.....

Yea, it was Mike Tyson's. Strangled on a cord to a treadmill or some type of exercise equipment.
