ABC News' Michael Falcone and Arlette Saenz report:
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, in an interview with ABC News on Saturday, called on presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney to release his tax returns in order to show voters that he has "nothing to hide."
Bentley said that Romney's refusal to release more returns has created a "distraction" that Democrats were successfully exploiting.
"I just believe in total transparency," Bentley told ABC News at the National Governors Association conference. "In fact, I was asked today that question - do you think that Governor Romney should release his tax returns? And I said I do. I said, I release my tax returns. I may be the only public official in Alabama that does, but I release mine every year and I just believe that people should release their tax returns. And if you get them out and just get past that, it just makes it so much easier."
Bentley, who took office in 2001, warned that failure to do so would continue to open the door for the Obama campaign and their Democratic allies to "cause distractions away from the real issue in this campaign and that's the economy."
Earlier this year, Romney released his 2010 tax documents and his estimated returns for 2011, but so far he has declined to offer disclosures for additional years and has indicated he is unlikely to do so. Democrats have pounced on Romney for what they see as a lack of transparency.
"They're doing everything they can to hurt Governor Romney and tax returns will be one of those things," Bentley said. "So the best thing to do is just get everything out in the open and just say, 'hey I have nothing to hide and I'm going to release my tax returns.'"
The Republican governor, who voted for Rick Santorum over Romney in his state's presidential primary, added: "I think that it's always easier just to say, hey I'm releasing everything, and just get it out there and then get past it."
That strategy, Bentley said, would allow the former Massachusetts governor to " start talking about the issues that I think that the people of America really are concerned about and that's our economy and jobs and 8.4 percent unemployment rate and a $16 trillion debt."
Responding to the Alabama governor's comments, Obama campaign spokeswoman Elisabeth Smith said: "We agree with Governor Bentley - Mitt Romney should exhibit total transparency and release his tax returns."
Smith added, "That's the only way the American people will learn about his motivations on critical policy matters and whether he invested in foreign tax havens and offshore accounts to avoid paying U.S. taxes or hedge against the dollar."

You see Republicans have to be held accountable for all of their actions no matter what. For the Democrats Principle and accountability aren't in their dictionary. Also they like to make up rules while their at it see "America Can't Wait" BS that BO pulls over us while being unchecked.

I'm trying to remember who said it, but someone from the Obama camp said they have a entire library of material to use to attack Romney. Romney clears this up, Obama moves on to the next negative material. That's all Obama has is to go negative. He can't defend his own record, he can't talk about what he is going to do (because he has nothing); all he has is to attack; and with abject lies.
America is waiting to hear these guys get on the issues and all Obama can do is deflect to things that really don't matter. Romney taxes? I think I heard Romney say he already provided about 2-3 years and 600 pages in financial records. That's about 600 pages more than Obama has shown us on his college records.

And this is what's so astounding about this. Not from Obama and his minion’s standpoint. I expect this level of dishonesty from them. I’m astounded that voters can’t see the abject dishonesty in how things have played out over the past 3+ years. Obama has been demanded his college records and he replied by sealing them. He has been demanded his actual birth certificate and he refuses. The same thing folks have demanded Obama (just show the documents and shut everyone up), they are now demanding of Romney.
How can voters not see this hypocrisy? Looking at the polls and analysis (if you believe them), this line of attack on Romney is working. With the Fast and Furious thing – something that affects real lives and is of a PUBLIC nature – people are worried about Romney’s taxes? Where is the concern from voters of this administration on things that REALLY matter and affect all of our lives?

I don't know if i'd release more tax returns than required if I were Romney but I would prove O is a liar, not mistaken as he will say if he is wrong on this but a straight up liar with the accusations of his tenure at BC; I've got disdain and distrust for all politicians, I find them all greasy to a point so it wouldn't surprise me either if Romney hasn't been 100% straight on this but you never know

What’s really interesting about this is people like Giantone swallow the LIE that Romney committed a felony regarding his tenure at Bain. No proof, no charges, no grand jury, no arrests, not even a hint of a move to formulate official accusations and charges against Romney. Telling enough just on the surface of those grounds that the accusation is nothing more than a lie; yet, without one shred of evidence Giantone claims the GOP is lying.
Giantone, you are one of the most dishonest people I’ve ever seen on here. You only care about your blinded allegiance to the liberal faith. There is no reasoning with people like you who are so disinterested in the truth and fairness (you liberals claim you own the corner of the marklet on fairness :ohwell: ) and the crimes committed by your side.
As the saying has been passed around: you think we should be more concerned with what Romney has done with his own money than what Obama has squandered with ours.
Now let’s talk about a REAL issue that Obama and Holder refuses to release REAL information on: Fast and Furious. People died from this failed and felonious program. Let’s talk about Obama’s connection with convicted felon Tony Rezko and how Obama acquired property through this FELON! Let’s talk about Rezko’s and Obama’s connection to another convicted felon: Rod Blagojevich. Let’s talk about Obama’s ties to ANOTHER convicted felon AND DOMESTIC TERRORIST: Bill Ayers. Let’s talk about Obama refusing to release his college transcripts. Let’s talk about Obama refusing to release his actual birth certificate.
Is it unreasonable to hold Obama to the same standards you’re demanding of Romney?

Alabama governor: My comments about Romney taken out of context (http://blog.al.com/wire/2012/07/alabama_governor_my_comments_a.html)
CLIFTON, Virginia -- Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, via a statement this evening, says he wants to set the record straight on comments he made about Mitt Romney's financial records at the National Governors Association meeting in Williamsburg, Va.
On the sidelines of that meeting today, said the AP, Republican Bentley "called on Romney to release all the documents requested of him."
"If you have things to hide, then maybe you're doing things wrong," Bentley said, according to The AP. "I think you ought to be willing to release everything to the American people."
The governor's office released this statement:
Alabama Governor Robert Bentley on Saturday responded to an Associated Press report that said the Governor called on Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney to release financial documents. The report further said Governor Bentley suggested that by not releasing various documents, a person might have something to hide.
Earlier Saturday, Governor Bentley was asked by a reporter at the National Governors Association conference whether he thought Mitt Romney should release tax returns. The Governor said yes - adding that he believes in transparency and releases his own tax returns each year. Contrary to the AP report, Governor Bentley did not call on Romney to release "all documents requested of him." The Governor was responding to whether tax returns should be released, and he said yes.
"I believe my comments were taken out of context, they were not reported in their entirety, and I want to make sure the record is set straight," Governor Bentley said in a statement. "I believe in trasparency, and that was the basis for my answer. I personally choose to release my own returns each year, and there was no effort to imply that Mr. Romney has anything to hide."
"While I believe in total transparency, I also believe much of the rhetoric surrounding Mitt Romney's personal finances is nothing more than an attempt by Democrats to distract from the real issues of the presidential campaign. The real issues are the economy, employment, and getting America back on the right track," Governor Bentley added. "I fully support Mitt Romney and his vision for our country, and I will do everything I can to help get him elected."
IMHO - Mitt has released all he has to - maybe Obama should release his college transcripts

Frankly I always thought something was awfully fishy. (I mean, geez, I have John Kerry's academic record, and he didn't even win. Obama's response was to seal them).
Consider this - he *transferred* to Columbia from Occidental. A transfer to an Ivy League school. For that to happen, he would have had to have absolutely fantastic grades to do that. Then he gets into Harvard Law. MUST have had stellar academic credentials. So he ought to at least be bragging about it.
Unless he didn't advance due to academics.
Seriously - we've already seen that geniuses like Kerry, and Bush, and Gore - the hardest part for them was getting INTO Ivy League schools. None of them distinguished themselves academically. In a rare twist of irony, the "stupid" one actually did a little better than Kerry.
So how come he ain't bragging about Occidental? He MUST have had nearly all A's. How did he get a transfer?

When our troops got out of hand or strayed from orders, etc… they were held accountable. Look at Abu Ghraib and Blackwater . The justice department even wanted to prosecute FBI and CIA agents on the waterboarding issue, even though they followed orders. There is a class-action lawsuit against several contractors (to include Halliburton) for providing inadequate incinerators in Iraq. They didn’t meet US specs and several of our troops have either died or contracted a plethora of ailments and conditions that have left them debilitated; probably for life. All of these things directly related to the wars.
