I'm subscribed to the Whole Foods FB feed and some woman just posted complaining that she has to drive a whole 15 miles to get to the closest WF store and wants to know when they'll be building one in her area.

Kinda makes you wish that we attached more validity to "survival of the fittest" in our society, doesn't it?

LOL which town? In my mom's hometown in PA, the closest McDonald's is still 16 miles away. In La Plata, we have 2 within 2 blocks of each other!

There's a part of Baily Crossroads with five McDonalds in a one mile stretch.

I am told that in the northern tier of PA, sort of like the Souther tier of NY State, there might be one McDonalds per three counties. That cows out number people.

Don't forget the trees! There are lots and lots of trees. And when you get tired of seeing trees, there are even more trees!
Interviewed for a job up there once. Decide that, although I like rural, it was w-a-y too rural for me, especially in winter, with SAD....

For chuckles I drove west from Binghamton NY thru the little town of Owego.... then civilization disappeared.
When I hear about people here talk about a rural way of life I laugh know what it's like up there. Then there are the mid western states.... it's an attitude adjustment.
The opposite of going into Northern Virginia and then complaining about over crowing conditions.
Sometimes you don't know how good you have it.

I think it was Elkland, in Tioga County. We have family close by (Wellsboro area) but I grew up in a city north of Pittsburgh (pop 25,000) so that was just a little bit TOO rural for me. I had to drive way too far to get to a mall and since their salary offer would have cut our family income by 75% (hubby wouldn't have had a job), I only thought about it for about 30 minutes before deciding oh, heck, no!! :killingme

The southern tier has some beautiful real estate. My husband was quite surprized when he saw the area for the first time. Having only been to NY City, (which should be a state by itself) he had no idea how rural parts of NY were.

I grew up 70 miles east of 'the city'. Couldn't ask for a more rural setting. Nothing but farms fields, open beaches, thick woods.
Farms have pretty much been replaced with vineyards... :ohwell: but still very rural.

It's all relative, though I'm astonished that someone in the DC area would complain about a 15 minute drive (I'd kill for that!). I grew up in a small town (12,000) in rural Wisconsin and even today I know people who would NEVER consider a 30 mile commute to work, much less a drive to the grocery store. In fact I know a couple (both hardworking people) who were out of work for more than a year - they couldn't fathom driving 35 miles to Milwaukee for a job after years of working "in town", and they'd never dream of moving away from home. Growing up, my own family made the long expedition (35 miles) into Milwaukee about twice a year - for school clothes and Christmas shopping. And that was the only time we were near a McDonalds - my parents could never understand why I'd choose McDonalds over Sizzler when we'd go to Milwaukee. I think there's a McDonalds in a nearby town now. Now I drive 65 miles one way to work - go figure.

Nope. It doesn't disappear. I have a huge family in those parts. Just a wee bit farther from where you thought people vanished :). Beautiful country.

Heh, i used to drive through Mexico, NY to get to and from college on breaks (I still hate driving down rt 104), though i would head down through Fulton so i didn't have to drive through Oswego. I'm from the next county to the west.

Yes, you'd be correct. My Great Aunt lives in Mansfield, PA up there. There's not even a freaken supermarket! My Mom (from busy, chaotic Long Island) is often up there with her and the only place to shop for food is Walmart. You see barns, farms, trees and cows. Their "town" has one stoplight!

Yep, Tioga county is where my Great Aunt & mother are. I have no clue where the nearest mall is.....never seen one up there! My Mom has to drive to Wellsboro or over the state line to NY to shop.

SIL usually goes over the state line to New York -- Elmira, I think. Some things you just can't get in Mansfield.
