View Full Version : Yesterday was my lucky day!

I was on my way to Annapolis yesterday to have dinner with some old friends and I noticed my car was making this whirring kind of noise, like maybe a belt is going bad. Hmmmm...okay, car's going into the shop for routine on Thursday anyway.
About 5 miles from my destination, I start losing power - steering gets tough, dash lights come on, etc. Frick. But the car doesn't die, so I turn everything off - air, radio - and proceed to my destination, have dinner, come out a couple hours later, and the car starts right up. Yay!
Around Solomons it starts losing power again, and by the time I got home I had dull headlights and the windows were slooooow to roll up. That's the lucky part - that I made it home and didn't break down somewhere on Rt. 2 where there is nothing, because my phone battery was dead as well.
I suspect the alternator is bad because of the way it lost power like that while I was driving. Anyway, I'll need to rent a car for a couple of days while they fixee fixee - where's a good place? I usually get from Hewitt's but am considering Enterprise instead, just because they'll pick me up and facilitate the transition.

You might want to start with small stuff; belt, proper belt tension, voltage regulator.....those things are the usual culprits. Don't rush off and get a new/refurb alternator just yet.

Just something to take into consideration with Enterprise-they may pick you up but it is on their terms. Translation: when they can afford to have someone get away from the office to come get you. This typically happens at either the beginning or end of a shift. And of course, they charge for the service. At least this has been my experience.

We had to get a rental when our car was in the shop. I think it depends on your insurance because they covered all costs. :yay: I didnt have to pay a dime for my rental car and they came to my house to pick me up.

Yep. Tell tale sign is your steering getting tough, and alternator not charging anymore.
On a side note. My parents had the battery light come on in their car in NC. They pull over to the rest stop, and wait a bit. They end up leaving anyway because the light went out when they started the car back up.
They get home, unpack, unwind....the next day the car wouldn't start.
They drove from NC to here all on battery power alone.

Try this If a problem exists in the charging circuit, check for a complete field circuit by placing a large screwdriver on the alternator rear-bearing surface. If the field circuit is complete, there will be a strong magnetic pull on the blade of the screwdriver, which indicates that the field is energized. If there is no field current, the alternator will not charge because it is excited by battery voltage. Even a 5th grader can do this, I think.

Dont go TDY for the government then, I can see your Ford Focus and raise you a Toyota Yaris - under powered, completely manual windows and door locks. Didn't realize it but the passneger doors (yes it had 4 but nobody could fit in the back seat) were not locked.
You can't find these cars on a dealer lot because they are so bare bones nobody would buy them :)
Oh, go with Hertz. I'm sure you can scavange up a corporate discount (employer, AARP, AAA...). I've been disappointed with the Enterprise operation down here. Slow and the last couple of times the vehicles have been dirty (inside), including cigarette ashes and smoke
Ther eis also Avis, but they make Enterprise look like saints. I Have an Avis Preferred (joke) account and the car has never been ready, in fact you sometimes have to wait for the employees to come off their smoke break.
Go to Hewitts, nice people, good service, just don't park in the bowling alley's spots.

The easier method is to get two wires, place one end of each wire on opposite sides of your tongue and place the other side of each wire on each post of the battery.

The auto parts place next to Sheetz, they'll test your electrical system and tell you exactly what has to be replaed.. for free.
If you need a new battery they'll replace it (labor is free).. (It COULD have been the auto parts place in the K-Mart plaza)
Toyota will charge you about $200 just to troubleshoot it (hook up a cable to your car and walk away for 10 minutes)..

Stop right there. I have in my vehicle emergency stash:
An umbrella
A flashlight (that my Dad put there two or three years ago and I haven't seen it since, but it's a heavy one and I could conk someone out if I had to)
An extra pack of cigarettes and a lighter (very important)
Quarters for the car wash
Note what is not there:
A jack
Jumper cables
A tool of any sort
Plus, that's why they invented guys - so they can tow your car in and fix it.
I have an ice scraper thing. :diva:
and the only reason I have it is because a couple years back my coworker (really sweet guy) saw me using a CD case and was all :cds: ...
I tried to give it back to him and he said :twitch: "no, keep it... you need it more than I do."

A smart person goes to AutoZone where they'll install the battery for you, for free.
Been there done that. However, last time I had to tell the guy how to do it because my battery had some special bracket on it that he couldn't figure out.
I had to install the battery for a friend. Couldn't get the car started to get to autozone to get the battery installed. I changed it in the middle of a pouring rain storm. I do not recommend this. I recommend taking it and letting someone else do it for you also. :roflmao:

Flip-flops present feet with a painful problem - CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/18/health/flip-flops-hurting-feet/index.html?hpt=hp_c2)
Yeah, I'm betting anybody would get excited by DeeJay putting a long cylindrical object against their rear bearings too.

Toyota just called:
Alternator is burnt up
Drive belt is torn
Needs a new battery
Needs new brake pads (I was expecting this)
Needs oil change and assorted etc that comes with the routine
Total: $1300
Actually that's not bad since it's a 2006 with 60k miles and this is the first time I've ever had to spend money on it, other than tires last year. And don't tell me that I can do it myself for less, or take it to so-and-so - I'm happy with the Toyota people and they know what they're doing. The good news is that she said if they can't have the car back to me by Friday, they'll set me up with a free loaner car.
So, all in all, not the disaster it could have been. :yay:

Making it to home sounds lucky to me. My car's alternator died on me on my first ever trip to NYC on my way into the city when I was 19. I thought I was going to have a heart attack when the lights dimmed and the windshield wipers started slowing down. I just made it to my destination and was lucky there was a mechanic a block over.

No way! Those make the best videos!
I don't want to go back through the thread and see if I told THE REST OF THE STORY:
The car starts, and I leave the restaurant. Then I notice I'm out of gas. So I pull in the gas station at, I want to say Harwood? I gas up, hold my breath, and the car starts again. :whew: At that point I look at my phone and realize the battery is dead. I make the drive down to, to Rt. 4, over the bridge, and coast into my driveway as the lights are dimming and stuff is starting to shut down.....only to find that I'm out of cigarettes.
:roflmao:
So it was just a piss poor planning day altogether, saved only through incredible luck.
Anyway, the Toyota people just called and said my car is done and I can come pick it up any time, so my luck is still holding.

I had a similar horror story, many years ago:
I had bought a POS Volvo from a roommate for a few hundred bucks and drove down to Maryland to visit my parents. On the drive home to Massachusetts, I begin to notice a dimming of the lights and everything else. I found a gas station along I-84 somewhere in Connecticut and coasted in about 3am and waited for them to open.
Turns out, the alternator had been attached to the engine block at one time, but the bolt had been broken off and my roommate re-attached it with wire from a hanger. The wire had come loose and there was no longer any tension on the alternator belt, so the battery ran out.
Well, I arrived totally broke. I had enough gas to make it to Boston, and to make matters worse, the gas station mechanics claimed they had more than a day's worth of jobs lined up, so they couldn't help. They did manage to rip out the wire and offer to re-bolt the alternator - for a price I couldn't afford. I asked them, just charge the battery and put it all back the way it was, I'll drive home on the battery. I had to call a friend for a credit card number because they wouldn't charge the battery for free.
They told me, you'll be dead on the road in a few minutes. I went about 20 minutes before it began to POUR down rain. Knowing that wipers and lights would make a trip home impossible, I gripped the steering wheel tightly and stared intently at a road that was almost invisible at times.
Somehow, I made it all the way home - over 100 miles - and amazingly, all the way to work the next day (a whole four miles). THEN it was dead. I charged the car again, took it to the local campus and sold it to a friend for a dollar.

Seems we've all had our share...
I was coming down from VT in the middle of January. I was somewhere outside NY, and to this day, still don't exactly where I was. The car (Subaru BRAT) just quit. Running, then not. Turn the key, starts. Let go of the key, it dies. turn the key, it starts, let go, it dies. Great. So I put it in gear and keep turning the key to limp down the shoulder until I spotted a garage.
Turns out that an idler pulley had frozen, and I threw the alternator belt. For some reason, this car was wired so that if the alternator quit, the electric fuel pump didn't work!! Problem was that they couldn't get a replacement idler pulley, couldn't remove it. Had to use a shorter belt to run the water pump without the alternator, and hot wired the fuel pump. Charged up the battery and went on my way. No radio, no heater blower. Damn cold. Got to within 10 miles of my house before the battery died. Called my bro, he gave me a jump charge. Headed for home, now getting dark, needed lights. Get down to the last mile to the house and I was shutting off anything that used juice, but the car is starting to buck and the lights are getting WAY dim. Last ditch effort; turned off the lights and drove the last 1/2 mile pretty blind. JUST make it into the driveway.
