"AS PRESIDENT OBAMA said in brief but eloquent remarks Friday, there is no rational explanation for the massacre that occurred in a Colorado movie theater early Friday.
“Such violence, such evil, is senseless. It’s beyond reason,” Mr. Obama said. “And if there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited, and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it’s not the trivial things, which so often consume us and our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another.
There’s something else that is senseless, though, and that is America’s gun laws. The temptation is not to mention this fact. That’s true partly because, as E.J. Dionne Jr. points out on the opposite page today, any mention of gun control is dismissed by gun-control opponents as an “exploitation” of tragedy.
But it’s true also because we’ve all been worn down by the futility and repetitiveness of the debate. A massacre occurs; advocates of gun control point out the folly of total permissiveness; the laws do not change; the issue disappears until the next massacre.
Well, we plead guilty to repeating ourselves. There is no rational basis for allowing ordinary Americans to purchase assault rifles. They’re not necessary for hunting, and they’re not needed for self-defense."

US gun laws make complete and perfect sense. So do the laws on murder. Apparently, this psycho was unaffected by the perfectly good laws on the books now which make multiple murder a serious crime. Its appalling that the gun laws didnt affect this guy (joke). Come on now. Are you really stupid enough to believe that any law would affect this guy. If he didnt buy the weapons legally he certainly would have acquired them illegally. The liberal rational is that a silly law would have prevented this tragedy. You need to get your head screwed on right!! Maybe if a half dozen people in the theatre were packing their own weapon this crazy would have found the theatre not so easy of a target. You can not outlaw crazy behavior and there is virtually nothing that can be done to prevent this kind of a tragedy from a legal basis.
And yes, ..assault weapons do have a valid purpose in society. No gun in the history of time ever...I mean EVER...jumped up off a table and shot somebody by itself. A well armed society is essential to maintaining true freedom.

They should make murder illegal!

Actually the 2nd was not written to make sure that citizens could protect themselves against each other, it was meant to allow the citizens the ability to fight the government should that ever come to be.
So, as far as assault rifles not being needed, he is wrong, you are not going to be able to fight a government attack with a simple .45 when the government army is shooting back with assault weapons.
The people, need to be equally armed in order to have a chance.

That and assault rifle means it just looks scary.

assault rifle is anything that would equalize the citizens against the government.
Now, I am going to draw a line and say that the citizens might not need to be allowed nukes. But as far as ground troop fire power goes, they should be allowed the same advantage,
Hard to fight a .50 rifle being fired at you from 800 yards when all you are allowed to have is a .45 handgun and a .22 long rifle.

your dipsticks new hero ........ but seriously ....... if you cannot afford it you cannot own it
99% cannot afford a M1 Abrams or an F-16 ....
.... most ground weapons, minus the current markup because of the Class III ban in 1989 IIRC ....... I saw an M60 you could own tomorrow [with a clean record] for 24 k at Show Place Arena last Sunday - this weapon really should be 3000 at the most most likely less ....... if they were selling 1000's per month
I can remember when a COLT AR 15 could be had for $ 800 used
Personally Nukes have no Tactical Use ....... you cannot use one to defend your block ....... you can erase your entire town, but no defend it ....
.... I agree Nukes are ridiculous .... but if Washington can drop one on a rebellious town, a rebel town should be able to sneak one in and retaliate ....
In fact the threat of nuclear annihilation might be the only thing to keep Washington from invading a state that decided to leave the UNION

Holmes broke several laws in doing what he did, what other law do you think would have made a difference?
Shall we make new laws so the next one can be charged with 22 crimes instead of ten, and punish the millions of law abiding citizens that did nothing wrong?

advocates of gun control point out the folly of total permissiveness;
Where do we have that?

I agree.....US gun laws make no sense.
I wonder if the author of this piece is aware that the current murder by firearm capital in this country (that would be Chicago) has a total restriction on firearm ownership?

That is actually the author of the article speaking there, not Obama. Obama was only quoted in the first paragraph.

Providing the guns to kill over 300 people didn't get the 2ndA repealled so maybe we can expect him to encourage more public gun rampages in areas where the populace has been disarmed
