View Full Version : Cleaning dog beds?

I do clean my dog's dog bed by taking off the cover and washing it. BUT my dog was sick the past 2 days and threw up on both her dog beds getting even the underneath pad (whatever it is) dirty and stinky. Any suggestions on how I clean this. I shoved the smaller one into the washer and it kind of worked (but ripped it up a little). I'm at a loss on how to clean the larger one. Just dump buckets of carpet cleaning solution on it and rinse until it smells better? Or is it just time to get a new dog bed?

Do you have a local laundromat with bigger washers? I would use some laundry soap with bleach. Or Natures miracle. Or a cup or so of vinegar.
Dry on low heat or air dry if you have clotheslines.

If you have a steam cleaner with a handheld attachment you could use that to clean it. Might be worth a trip to a laundry mat and wash it in an industrial machine. May be cheaper just to get a new one though. Makes me wonder if they make a pet bed plastic cover to go under the outer one. Good luck.

New bed is he only option. Chemicals could hurt the pup.

Good now. A hunk of something finally came out and after some water and rice all seems good. I was worried she was going to have to go to the vet, but all seems well. She was at the In-laws while my husband and I were on vacation and came back to us with a terrible ear infection and vomiting. Usually they are good dog sitters, but I don't know what happened this time.

The cleaner is made for pets and she lays on some of the carpets we use it on so I think she would be fine in that reguard.

That's why I can't stand the thought of leaving my dogs with anyone. No one can take care of them like me :howdy:

are they the foam like bed? If so... take it out side and spray it down with the hose, and use a cleaner that is safe for pets....
rinse really well and just let it sit out and air dry.

my dogs beds get this done 2-3 times a year and are still going strong.

Must be a big dog - mine just get thrown in the washer and dryer whole, along with a load of toys, every few months. I always pray that some squeakers die a horrible death...

I've always thought it was less expensive to replace a dog bed than go to any extra effort, but I'm not sure about the larger stuff. I agree with trying a commercial washer if possible.

DD, glad your pup is doing better.

Wirelessly posted (Samsung Galaxy S III )

My large one has some type of hamster like bedding in it instead of fluff. Can't wash that.

:killingme so true...

for my little dog.. i just toss hers into the wash as well.... it has ruined some of them by shifting the padding around.

and everytime i wash a toy that squeeks... the are :dead: after that!!!

Dog seems completely better today. Fetching balls outside, demanding belly rubs and begging for the crackers I am currently eating.

My slightly smaller bed that I washed did have the cedar chips in along with the stuffing. I'll have to sew the hole up today.

Dumped a bucket of cleaning solution on the larger bed this morning and then hosed it off. Smells much better. I'll probably do it 2-3 more times to be on the safe side. (Her vomit and drool was so disgusting smelling. I actually thought she had pooped at first.) I considered letting it soak in the tub with the cleaning solution, but I was worried about it dripping all over the house when I went to take it outside.

I'll probably go ahead and buy her a new bed soon, but I'm glad she'll have something to lay on in the mean time besides the old rugs I gathered together for her to sleep on last night. I might move her old bed to the garage so she can lay on it when she hangs out with the husband.

Happy to hear she is doing better today. Did she go swimming while she was at the In- Law's? Poor thing might have had Swimmer's Ear, if Dogs can get that, and it would explain her vomiting.

I suspect my sister-in-laws dog was chewing/licking on my dog's ear. He is always doing that and licking/eating her drool. So gross.

She is a lab and she is a swimmer, but I don't think she swam until the last day which wouldn't explain the infection. Also, she gets ear infections, but never swimmers ear with any vommiting after swimming. Her ears were clean before we left and I cleaned them leading up to vacation to make sure they would be good while we were gone.

I don't know what this is but this is what finally came out on round 4 day 2 of throw up.

It looks to me like it might be a part of a Corn Cob! I hope she isn't obstructed!

You probably have already tried this, but sometimes if you throw a tennis ball in with the bed it will keep the padding from clumping up.

My lab always eviscerated squeaky toys. No toys shall squeak was her motto. She could get squeakers out faster than I could get the tags off the toys. Loved to gut them, too. No fluffy squeaky toys were allowed to live with our lab around.
