All of a sudden, biting into a fried chicken sandwich has become a political statement.

Chick-fil-A, the fast-food chain known for putting faith ahead of profits by closing on Sundays, is standing firm in its opposition to gay marriage after touching off a furor earlier this month.

Gay rights groups have called for a boycott, the Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from kids' meals, and politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

Across the Bible Belt, where most of the 1,600 restaurants are situated, Christian conservatives have thrown their support behind the Atlanta-based company, promising to buy chicken sandwiches and waffle fries next week on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

The latest skirmish in the nation's culture wars began when Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press that the company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." In a later radio interview, he ratcheted up the rhetoric: "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at him and say, `We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.'"

I don't know why all this fuss all of a sudden. CFA is well known for being a Christian run business, therefore they would be against same gender unions from the start. :shrug: All they're doing is stating what most people already knew.

I support gay marriage - but I am with Chik-Fil-A on this. He's not discriminating or in any way doing anything against gays. The only thing is his opinion, and a boycott isn't going to make him change his mind. And he didn't go around proclaiming his opinion, he was asked.

(How many of you are likely to change your mind on something if someone does something like this to you?)

I find it odd that there was no outrage against the President before he so recently when he had his flip-flop, excuse me, evolutionary epiphany.

CFA supporters better show up after August 1st, as well. This whole thing is outrageous.

That would depend on the purpose, wouldn't it? The money might not be the issue if the purpose is to control/limit/misdirect/confuse or otherwise affect the information flow.

After taking a look at a map of congregations across the United States (http://media.photobucket.com/image/Religious%20Map%20Of%20The%20United%20States/wh44_photos/religionMap.jpg), it will be interesting to see what happens with this when all of the Baptists get involved in it.

Personally, I always admired the business stance of staying closed on Sundays, putting families over profits. The Marriage stance is not surprising. People will make up their own minds about what to do. The key is to try to ensure that accurate information is available in addition to all of the propaganda being spun out now.
