What's the plan after you till it?
I tried doing this with our field, didn't work so well.

I have a box blade that im going to use after i till it up. That should make it nice and level/smooth.
Part of this is to build a runway for my RC planes. The rest is just because my field is WAY to rough.

not trying to be a PIA just sharing lessons learned. I had big issues trying to do the exact same thing, now I have a farmer farming it instead.
Does the tractor you plan on using have a draught control lever?? Can you set the depth of the box blade (a lever or setting like you'd have for the mower deck)?
Mine doesn't and it makes it VERY difficult to get it set right. You think the blade is set to ground level, you go six feet and the box blade is dug in to the top of the tines.. I don't know why JD didn't include it on a tractor that has a very good 3 pt, but they did.
Have the same issue with the landscape rake, even though I bought the anti-gouge wheels to go with it.

What size tractor and catagory hitch. My neighbor tried to use my tiller with his 20 hp tractor and it could not even lift it. Have a 7 foot wide tiller and 50hp diesel tractor

I have a 40 HP tractor with a standard class 3 hitch.
I know how to operate my box blade as to not just dig up the dirt like others mentioned. It takes some practice, but its not hard.
Id like to find a 4/5 FT tiller to pull (and rent). Then use the box blade to level it all out. Be nice to have a compactor of some type too after that.

You think the blade is set to ground level, you go six feet and the box blade is dug in to the top of the tines..
Try taking all the teeth/tines completely out of the box. You dont need to dig at that point, just smooth and level. Just like working on your driveway.
That works well for me. I will drag my driveway with the teeth down to stur everything up, and then remove the teeth, and run a few passes, to smooth it all out.

You sound much more practiced than I am.. I gave up on our field.
Where are you located, and how much land?

Still looking for recommendations. The place in Prince Frederick does not rent Tillers..
Did you call Hugh Gardiner 301-934-2841 and see if they have one, they did/do have a really nice aerator. Pretty sure LaPlata Mill does, 301-934-8161. They may still have a 3 pt. Harley Rake which would be easier for what you're describing.

Thanks! Thats the info i needed. I didnt even know what a harley rake was until you mentioned it. I'll definitely check into that. May do the job even better than the tiller.

I saw one being used here, but on ground that was already plowed/tilled..
Just saw a video here, about 2/3 the way through shows it on untilled soil.. NICE!

If your just looking at leveling, a harley rake is your best bet. Even after you level with the box blade the soil that you've tilled will have to be rolled, soaked down and leveled again to get the soil settled. Trust me, been there, done that.
The ACE Hardware in Solomons rents a Bobcat with a 60" Harley Rake. Also, Sunbelt Rentals in Waldorf rents Dingos with a 48" Harley Rake.
Harley Rake is the brand name. They're also refered to as Soil Conditioners.
Best of luck.

I call all the places that were mentioned. Seems that the only harley rake for rent is for a bobcat. I already have a 30Hp tractor - really dont need to rent a bobcat...
I'll keep looking because it seems to be what i need. Id like to get this done soon, i need my runway for my RC planes!!!!

well damn, I wonder if LaPlata mill has it listed as something else. Power rake maybe? No rototiller either? I was just there Saturday afternoon. I know they had a really nice rear tine in the front of the store.
Some of their employees only know what the computer screen displays. Maybe you have to ask what 3 pt. equipment they have available..
