NY tag on SUV means 65 mph minimum. MD car is built like a wedge. Hits the taller SUV low on vehicle - it flips on side.
Pretty simple.

I wouldn't wager a guess. I would never claim to know the dynamics of car accidents. I really just try to avoid them.
Don't know what NY has to do with it. That's the average speed on 235.

New Yorkers are prone to driving like Nuts. Roll-Overs can occur if a Tire blows out, or if the Driver hits a curb while driving too fast.

It's hard to be sure, but it looks like the impact was from the front of the car into the right side of the SUV. I'd bet that the SUV was turning left from 235 NB, the traffic in the left lane was stopped, and the car was moving normally.

:duel:  I was born/raised in NY and let me tell ya.....people around here drive like loons too. Just spent a long weekend back home. Driving back here yesterday, I almost got hit in Maryland 3 separate times. Bottom line....people drive like crap everywhere.
Having worked in auto claims for 10 years, I've seen/heard it all. People just need to pay attention to the damn road and put down the phones, cigs, burgers, beers, whatever it is that distracts them. I swear people are getting dumber/more careless all over the place.

I don't mind New York or New Jersey drivers, as they all drive fast. Usually they are used to speed and are good, fast, aggressive drivers that you can depend on being alert.
The bad part comes when you add morons who don't pay attention to driving and have no idea what they are doing, but insist that they have to be in front.
Not a good mix.

So common around here that people see one lane stopped and think they'll be able to go across all lanes. If you can't see ALL oncoming lanes, don't just gun it and pray.

I saw a woman do that one day at the U-Turn where Toyota of Southern Maryland is. All three lanes N/B were stopped and all three cars left a gap for her to U-Turn. She took it and jumped to the turn lane only to get smacked by a Mustang doing about 40 MPH.

Was the SUV doing a U-turn? I've seen many close calls there; Alot of people skip the left turn light (because when it's red it takes forever) to turn into Wyle & go up to that turn lane to do a U turn. And of course someone heading North & wanting to turn left into the Church has the same problem when traffic is heavy.
I despise the U-turn mentality that the 'planners' incorporated on Rt. 235.

Along with no common sense driving, such as people forcing there way in traffic at a U-turn while traffic is practically at a stand still, and very nice drivers make room for them, but I saw the driver making the U turn at Navy Fed drive straight across all four lanes into the car dealer ship across the street, while a car traveling in the right turn lane almost nailed him because he did not see him, WTF.

The traffic exiting Navy Federal straight across to illegally enter that U-turn and the people going from Wawa across three lanes to take the left on Buck Hewitt are the two most dangerous groups n that stretch of 235, IMHO. Followed very closely by the traffic exiting the church to the south wanting to go north.

We used to have what I call 'feeder roads' into shopping malls, or stretches of retail/food establishments; you gracefully exited onto the feeder road & there was no way to merge back onto the main drag/highway. You did your business, got back onto the feeder road & went to the next intersection where you either merged back into traffic or went through a controlled light. Kind of like all the turn lanes here, but more controlled. *This was in Virginia Beach.*

That's what I do, however, the point is valid. That whole stretch is rife with a lot of stupid design choices that almost seem intended to tempt drivers into stupid choices. Like a ledge in a video game that's almost in reach, tempting the player to try again and again, these places on the 235 are like bait to drivers. And we continue to pay a price. Matter of fact, looking over it on Maps, the one exit from WaWa in question should not even exist. Not even enough room to get up to speed before it turns into right turn only.
Google Maps (http://goo.gl/maps/Jo6u8)
Seal it off.
And this U-turn should have a barrier to prevent folks from exiting NavFed from crossing straight over to it......

Actually, I think I am fun to be around, but I might be biased:killingme It's not about what I don't like, it's what almost everyone doesn't like. I think you will find that people generally agree that people who inconvenience others for their own convenience are looked upon as selfish asses. I used the WBC as an extreme example of legal but wrong. The government allows me to do many things legally that most people agree are not right.
If we as a society only use "What I can legally get away with" as the yardstick of proper interpersonal behavior, we have sort of lost our way, I think. There is a right and wrong way to treat others, above and beyond whats required by law. and sticking it to others just so you may shave a few seconds off your time in traffic isn't right, even if it is legal.

I seem to recall from my driver's ed class, that's the case - you are supposed to turn into the closest available lane, not cut across the highway to a lane of your choice.
Doesn't matter anyway, though. I also recall that one of the first things they taught us in that class is that your first responsibility is to avoid a collision. Even if it means giving up right-of-way, or not getting the lane you want.
And the people cutting across the highway at that location, at rush hour, are doing a piss-poor job of avoiding a collision. Yeah, it's a ####ty highway design. Whining about it won't help you after you get t-boned there because you were impatient.
