xxxx – With today’s announcement about Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney is doubling down on the Koch brothers’ agenda :faint: – selecting a running mate who has received thousands in campaign cash from the oil tycoons. Ryan is a staunch climate change denier and a leading voice in the most anti-environmental House of Representatives in our nation’s history. There’s now no doubt that a Romney-Ryan administration would pose a serious threat to our environment.

Will you join us in fighting back? Chip in $5 today to help us get out our message in key swing states and defeat the Romney-Ryan ticket.

Romney-Ryan Would Devastate America’s Clean Energy Economy, Jeopardize Thousands of Jobs

WASHINGTON – In selecting Rep. Paul Ryan (WI-1) as his running mate, Mitt Romney is doubling down on one of the most extreme budget plans ever written.

“Mitt Romney has chosen a running mate who is a leading voice in the most anti-environmental House of Representatives in congressional history. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan would continue giving $40 billion in taxpayer handouts to Big Oil, devastate the renewable energy sector and jeopardize thousands of jobs all across this country,” said Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters (LCV). “Romney is doubling down on the Koch Brothers agenda--picking a running mate who has received more money from the oil tycoons than nearly any other politician.”

A Romney administration would devastate the renewable energy sector, which is one of the fastest growing industries in America. The extreme Romney/Ryan budget plan would cut $3 billion in energy programs in 2013, and would spend just $150 million from 2013 to 2017, barely 20 percent of what was invested in 2012 alone. It also calls for giving Big Oil $40 billion in taxpayer subsidized handouts while cutting billions of dollars in clean energy investments.

Just like Mitt Romney, Ryan also opposes tax incentives for renewable energy. Ryan has voted in Congress against everything from tax credits for renewable electricity and alternative fuels to raising CAFE standards for automobiles. All the while, Ryan has received $244,250 and counting from the oil and gas industry.

Ryan’s extreme voting record has earned him a score of just 3% on LCV’s 2011 National Environmental Scorecard, with a horrible 20% lifetime score. The non-partisan scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position.

90 days – that’s it.

Just 90 days are left until voters go to the polls right here in Ohio --and across the country, and early voting begins in just 56 days.

If we are ever going to have an opportunity to enact meaningful climate solutions or defeat the attacks on our clean air and water laws during the next six years, environmental voters must act now.

I believe strongly that we must take on the challenge of reducing our dependence on foreign oil, increasing investment in clean energy jobs, ending tax-payer subsidies for Big Oil, and finding a common sense path that curbs – once and for all – the ongoing threat of global warming.

But, corporate special interests – backed by Karl Rove and the Koch brothers – see things differently than you and I do. :cds: That’s why they are flooding the airwaves in Ohio to try to elect my opponent, who is running on a radical, right wing, Tea Party platform. In fact, these groups have already spent more than $11 million on false ads and other tactics to try to defeat me in November. This amount is – by far – the most spent against any U.S. Senate candidate this election cycle.

They know that my 93 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard isn’t a fluke. They know that if I’m reelected, I will continue to be a leader in protecting the air we breathe and the water we drink while creating clean energy jobs in Ohio and across the country. And that scares them.

Will you help me take them on and answer their attacks? Please make a gift today to my campaign via LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen. In the next 48 hours, we plan to raise $12,000 from LCV supporters like you.

LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen program is devoted exclusively to pro-environment candidates for Congress. By “bundling” contributions from thousands of donors who care about our environment, LCV Action Fund provides candidates with financial support while signaling the power of the environmental movement. This allows your gift to have even more impact, because the more environmental voters contribute to campaigns like mine, the more power we have to take on attacks by polluters and corporate special interests.

And on a personal level, it also lets me know that the environmental community has my back in such a critical election year.

Everything we’ve achieved in recent years on issues like global warming, fuel efficiency, and clean energy jobs depends on winning in Ohio and across the nation. The balance of power in the U.S. Senate – and our ability to advance meaningful climate policies in the years ahead – could come down to whether or not we have enough resources available to win.

I hope you will chip in right now and make a gift to my campaign via LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen. Remember, when you contribute to candidates through the LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen bundling program, you help increase our collective environmental strength in Congress.

Thank you for your support.

The Flat Earth Five are on the defense.

Ever since LCV Victory Fund announced our new campaign to defeat the Flat Earth Five, thousands of LCV supporters have contributed to our efforts to take down some of the worst anti-science, climate-denying members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

If you planned to add your support to this campaign, the time is right now. There’s less than 100 days left until November 6th and there is still a mountain of work to be done. Knowing that they will be targeted for defeat by LCV Victory Fund, the Flat Earth Five are ramping up their campaigns, and calling in the reinforcements. We need to keep up the pressure!

TRIPLE Your IMPACT: Time is running out. Donate to LCV Victory Fund to help defeat the Flat Earth Five.

With campaign efforts ramping up and the media jumping on the story, we’re ready to add the next member of the Flat Earth Five to the roster: Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA).

Rep. Dan Lungren (R-CA) has a lifetime LCV score of just 4 percent and has made numerous outrageous statements on climate change. Lungren claims that “ideological bias” is driving efforts to curb climate change, but his own ideology is unchallenged by facts. He points to an obscure 1974 article in Time magazine about an “impending ice age” as an excuse for dismissing scientists’ “dire predictions” about climate change threats. Lungren has declared that EPA regulation of carbon is a “vicious blow” to “our freedom” that gives the EPA the power “to effectively control … the way in which we breathe.”

The Flat Earth Five are supported by polluting interests’ deep pockets who are willing to say (and spend) just about anything to win in November. And let’s not forget the hundreds of millions that corporate special interests – backed by Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers – have pledged to spend to win the White House, Senate, and House.

Your donation today will go immediately towards LCV Victory Fund’s $1.5 million campaign across these five districts. Your gift will help with television advertising, direct mail and an extensive phone program that will let voters know that these members of Congress are dangerously out-of-step with their district on the issue of climate change.

With so much at stake for our planet and our economy, we can't afford to give the Flat Earth Five another term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Please chip in by tonight’s midnight deadline. Your gift will go three times as far to defeat the Flat Earth Five.

Thank you for supporting LCV Victory Fund’s campaign to defeat the Flat Earth Five.

Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski
