Anyone here play in the local leagues? I love to play, but I'm not all that good. There is a recreational league as well as a drop-in league, as opposed to the competitive leagues. I think I might join for this season.

I found the information in the Fall Recs and Parks catalog. I think I may do the drop-in league. They meet Wed. at Esperanza middle, Thurs. at Oakville Elementary from 7-9. It's $30 for a 10-week session and you just go whenever you want, which is nice for those of us w/young kids b/c we aren't obligated to several nights per week.

I play in the Charles County Co-ed Leagues. Good fun and incredibly competitive. A lot of the better players on the Charles teams play in the St Mary's leagues as well.

How do you like it? Is it a good time, and are people nice to the newbies who aren't very good??

I like it a lot! If you are not very good we are nice to you and try and help you improve, however some people take it more seriously than others. I promise you there will be nights where you are not the worst player, and other nights some people might show up that could play in the olympics, but we keep switching up the teams until it is even.

Awesome! So you pretty much sign up at one of the locations and stick to playing at that one place, right? I think I'd do Esperanza, since it's probably closer than Oakville (although not by much).
Unless, however...some other forumite who claims to be an awesome server happened to sign up...

basically, you show up at Esperanza pay three dollars everynight you show up, that way you dont have to pay 30 upfront and worry about missing a night. I dont know anything about how Oakville runs theirs. We start Sept. 22 7-9 pm.

Well, I could walk to Oakville so I'm thinking I'm gonna check that out:lol:
I'll let you know what I decide:yay:

Hello everyone! (This is my first post to the board)
I moved to Waldorf in August of last year. Since that time, I haven't really had the opportunity to meet a lot of people in the area. One way I was hoping to do so was through volleyball. Does anyone know of local leagues or drop-in games that are still happening now?
Has anyone ever gone to "Capital Clubhouse"? I stopped by one weekend on a Saturday night and it was inundated with teens and pre-teens. I'm 24 and I'm hoping to find more people around college age or older.
Thanks for any replies!

I don't play here but when I lived in NY there was a great bar with a sandpit & volleyball court out back--Mr. Gugs was the name. They had a bunch of leagues. I was the co-captain of one and it was SOOO much fun. Not many people took it super seriously and we all drank and socialized in the bar after the game. Hmmm I wonder if Rendevous can get a truck load of sand....

BCP - I'm male. Both my wife and I are interested in getting started with some co-ed v-ball. Age is not really a concern -- just looking for like minded people.
Marianne - That's exactly the kind of atmosphere I'm looking for -- laid back w/ plenty of socialization. When did you move in from New York? Do you play any sports here in MD?

Is there enough interest to set something up ourselves? Are there local rec-centers or gyms that we could all meet up at? Do you know enough people to get at least 6? (My wife and I are willing to play)

I'll have more time in a few months, I'd love to play - about ten years ago, I used to play every night of the week and more on weekends. Sadly, it's been too long.

Thanks for your reply! This is exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, Esperanza Middle School is about 40 miles away from my house. Does anyone know about anything like this in the Waldorf area?
I found the following website for Charles County Recreation, but it looks like the V-ball league hasn't been set up yet: http://www.charlescounty.org/cs/recreation/sports_adult.htm Has anyone been involved with the co-ed league?

Update to all interested v-ball players:
I sent an email to the folks at the Charles County Recreation department and got the following response:
"Our volleyball league season is over; they finished up in December. The games
are at Wade Community Center in Waldorf. We register teams of players beginning
in September, and the cost per team is currently $275 per team. If you like
volleyball, we have drop in programs at lots of centers, and it's a good way to
hook up with a team ($2 per night). Here's the schedule:
Wade Wed, 8 - 9:30 PM
Piccowaxen Tues, 7 - 9:00 PM
Smallwood Tues/Thurs, 7 - 9 PM
Mattawoman Thurs, 8 - 9:15 PM"
My wife and I are going to go to the Smallwood location tonight. Anyone else want to try and make it? Addresses of the community centers can be found here: http://www.charlescounty.org/cs/commcenters/aboutus.htm
