View Full Version : How many of you live in St. Mary's and commute to D.C.?

Tommy McKay from yesterday's Enterprise:

Unlike the other counties, St. Mary's is not a commuter county for Washington, D.C., he said. "People move to St. Marys' County because their jobs are in St. Mary's County," he said.
While I don't have figures on this, I bet there are plenty of countians who make the daily trek up Route 5. Not as many as in Charles and Calvert, of course.

I do everyday, and days like this morning can be horrid unless you know some back roads. I have said it before, we elect idiots to the BOCC. Maybe he should get up at 5 am each morning, get on the road at 6 and see how many of us from here are going to DC to work. There may be a few jobs in st mary's, but, I don't think I could support my family on 24-26,000 a year. He needs to get real.

I would say that it is easily within the 10,000 to 15,000 range for daily commuters or 15 to 20 percent of the population.

I don't but my mom has for 28 years. I know of several others. Better money up there.

Before the big growth in contracting happened in the '80s, I suspect that most of the countians commuting to Washington were black. Private employers in areas like ours had a long history of hiring blacks as only manual labor. Plus, there just weren't that many professional job opportunities here. That affected whites too, except that the whites who wanted better jobs left the area entirely.

I did it for almost 36 years.....Like someone said "Let him get up at 5AM" and do the ride for a couple of weeks and he'll see how many people do it....He needs to do it for a while to get the full effect of the "good" days and the "bad" days.....Sounds like today is one of the bad ones.....

:howdy: Mechanicsville to SW DC.

There are about 6 buses that leave California's airport in the early morning, pick up more folks in Charlotte Hall and trek into the city. There are also about 15 buses leaving charlotte hall every 12 minutes (approx), picking up in Waldorf, and trekking into DC ... M-F ... The ones starting in Cali are usually darn close to full when they pick up in C. Hall; and the ones starting in C.Hall usually have at least 20 peeps on 'em when they head to waldork. :ohwell: So, yea, we all get on that bus or road to DC b/c the job market (and paychecks) in St. Mary's are soooooo fruitful.

I was in the military. But no contractor that I've talked to would/could come within $20k of my current salary, and I have long-term financial goals that -- taking more of a cut in salary than that -- wouldn't be met (e.g, retirement investments, college fund for DQ, etc.). But I'm not biatching about not working on base ... I'm much happier trekking into DC for a gov't job that I know isn't going to "expire" with a contract and leave me hanging. :ohwell: It's a trade-off ... and it's my choice.

That being said, personally, I'm sick of commuting, but rather than biatch about it, I'm doing something about it. And staying in St. Mary's (or the DC area, for that matter) is not one of the options I'm considering.

for real. my mother who has worked in DC for 28 years tried to find a job down here. she'd take a huge pay cut. even with the bus fares, she's making much much more than she could ever make down here.

I moved here 3 years ago from the midwest with the promise of a gov't job that paid $25K more that I was making there. Moved to St Mary's cause with 2 kids and critters we weren't going to live in a townhouse or send my girls to school in PG or the district. STM seemed similar to the rural character of where we came from.

If I knew now what the commute entailed I would have stayed put and had a better life for my family. I realized yesterday that I spend more time on the bus than with my kids, get up at 4 AM daily, but would never drive it myself.

I looked at jobs on base, but going from one agency to another isn't easy. And I really don't think I would like working for DOD.

I'm actively looking really hard for a job either on the west coast or midwest, the commute has a lot to do with that. I couldn't imagine doing the commute for another 20 years.

I even am considering paying for the move myself with the equity we have gotten in 3 years here.

Consider yourself blessed. My commute is probably similar to yours - Hollywood to Suitland. Get up every day at 4, take the bus in.

BUT! When I lived in Montgomery County, the time of my commute was only half that. It STILL took me anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to get to work. I lived in lower Calvert County, and my commute time extended another 30 minutes for a drive that was more than twice as far. I always thought it was funny that distance/time wise, the last four miles of my trip were the least 'efficient'.

If you live in most parts of Northern Virginia, forget about it. You'll take an hour into work MINIMUM.

So for the cost of perhaps a whole hour every day, you get to live out in the country in a nice home. I think it's a bargain.

I did that commute for 13 years. Constantly looking for jobs closer to home - on the base, etc. But as stated, the salary cut even without the cost of commuting was pretty big. It wasn't until I was laid off that I was able to find a local job. I know I was very lucky because I am the 2nd income for our family and not the primary. If that was the case I would have been looking for a job back in DC.

To get jobs with a lot of the base companies require previous knowledge or experience of how DOD works, their forms, etc. If you don't have that or know someone who can get you in to a firm forget about it.

If we didn't have so many commuters why did they need to expand the bus service to California? I agree, all the BOCC members need to commute for about 1 month to DC just to understand the traffic nightmare it is even on good days.

It darn well better count, it's WORSE than commuting TO D.C., I go all the way to Metro Center on the bus and then metro it all the way back out of D.C. to the Silver Spring Metro. I'd kill (figuratively speaking) to work downtown.

SHEEIT, you should see the 4:30a.m. (when it leaves C.H.) bus. It starts in Cali. and arrives with 10-15 people on it, gets another 20-30 and then goes to Waldork and fills and STILL leaves 15-20 people standing at the stop.

to answer your damn question- i did not create the id to mess with people. i am not going to sit in here and explain myself to a bunch of people with nothing better to do than mess with me. i am new at all of this and i just use it as some way to occupy my time when it's slow at work. all i've been is nice to everyone in here. as a matter of fact, i've given you both good karma. but, whatever. you will notice that i will never post with the id that i created for my son. at this point i'm sick of arguing with people who just aren't worth it anymore. i've tried to stay nice the past couple of days that i've been posting but you've managed to make that impossible. add all of the red boxes that you want. it's the least of my concerns. it's going to be a shame when you lose everyone in here because people are sick of the way that you act. i have several friends that used to come in here all of time and they don't anymore. they warned me not to waste my time because of all of the aholes in here. should've listened, but i didn't think that people whould act this way to someone as sweet and caring as me. for now- :biteme:

I always thought the contractors paid well if you had the military or technical experience. And I heard the DOD salaries on base were the same as in the D.C. area, since the locality pay was made the same back in the '90s.

Yeah, but the rules say you have to be 13 to join the forums. If there are groups here, they are for parents to participate in in their kid's behalfs. Your kid can't read, can't type, can't walk, talk or even see from across the room. It's not like he's going to find other 3-month olds to make friends with. No one is jumping on you, you are freaking out for nothing. No one is even getting on your case for letting your kid use the internet, we don't really believe that is happening. We are just confused about why you'd feel the need to create and ID for your baby, and by extension, he must have an email address too. It's a curiosity question, we are wondering what you are thinking about. If you were thinking it'd be neat to create an MPD, and you were playing with that, that's an explaination, but the next question would be, why not create one that wasn't so obviously connected to you. No need to get all uptight.

They are on the same pay scale ... but ya see, I'm not the Base Commander's daughter, and I don't sleep with her. :ohwell:

I was in the Air Force vs. the Navy and don't do jets or computers ... so my options on the base are EXTREMELY limited. :ohwell: I've tried, was unsuccessful ... so be it.

I'm not biatching, like I said ... but some folks think you can just walk into a job on the base (or the government) if you were in the military and that's not always the case. Having served in the military does have some advantages, but depending on what your objective is, it also could be of little to no help. Depends on the job ...

This is why if I stay at my current job, I want to work more at our customer site. I like my current office because of the window and all (although they moved me so I no longer have a mountain view :tantrum:) but the customer site is fully self contained as well.
