View Full Version : My computer hates me

As soon as I hit submit on this thread, it'll kick me off the internet. :tantrum
Starting yesterday, it's been acting up. It doesn't want to dial-up and it keeps kicking me off. When I try to dial up, it usually gets as far as that sound, that I've always thought of as a car accident, but then it goes on and on and then doen't connect. Sometimes it goes through all that, connects and then disconnects before the browser opens. When I do get a browser window, I can get to a site, but then as soon as I do some sort of command like a download or deleting emails or submitting a response to a thread, sometimes it kicks me off immediately, sometimes it does the function and then kicks me off.
Anyone have any insight? I ran a virus scan. I cleaned up the drive. I checked the modem status and it seems to check out. :burning:

My mothers computer at home is doing the same thing. She has to dail up like three times to get a connection....
My computer is crapping out too, but it's just the internet explorer. i hate IE, I want to get firefox. But i just bought the new anti-virus program and i have already tired a registry clean up and ad and spyware blockers. I think i will just toss it out in to the yard....I know my BF would love that!!!!

I wish it only took three time. Yesterday, it dialed each number 5 times and went through 8-10 numbers and still didn't work.
I'm still on, it hasn't kicked me off yet, but it's just a matter of time.

According to IM, you are off now.

Because I didn't log into IM last time it crashed. I didn't see the point, since I wasn't going to be logged in long anyway.

are you using windows XP, IE, and symantec antivirus?
If so, download the new updates to the software. Earthlink is having dialup problems too. are you using them?

Earthlink. That could be the problem. I have XP and I ran housecall antivirus, because my installed virus definitions are out of date again and my dear husband keeps forgetting to get me the information on the free software his office offers, because they don't want people accessing their email from home and infecting the office computers.

What is the date of your virus definitions?

I don't know. I don't know how to find out. All I know is that I installed it back in the spring and it was supposed to be seeking it's own updates, but I'm not sure it ever did that.
All I know for sure is that when I installed the new Windows updates, it now tells me everytime I log on that my virus definitions are out of date. But I ran Housecall and it didn't find anything.

What do you use for virus protection? Norton, Etc.?

The problem is not on my end. We are supposed to be able to download the software off a certain website, but it won't let me in because the computer people screwed something up. I am trying to get a disk with it on it.

OK it IS with Earthlink, partially. the rest of the Equation is Windows XP, and your antivirus program. You have to send a crash report when it crashes to get the EXACT reason it is crashing but i suspect it's your antivirus needs an update to the software to be compatible with XP (I just got a brand new one with both these things and had to do it), but don't click send until you have dialed up and are connected. Earthlink is having major difficulties today too, evidently. They were having problems with MD, PA and VA last night. MO MONEY out da window.... :burning: VERY FRUSTRATING to say the least.

IM is notorious for "back doors". If you can stay on without IM running, I would uninstall IM, download a new copy, and reinstall it.
