Something has happened to my desktop machine and I cannot run Internet Explorer anymore. Everytime I launch it, it gets an error almost immediately saying "an error has occurred and IE must close" with the option to restart it. If I trying restarting it, I get the same error. I cannot get a browser window to open at all. Thank heavens I have a laptop so I'm not totally disconnected from the outside world.
My ISP is Earthlink. I was with tech support and they had me uninstall and reinstall IE, but it didn't help any. I'm running Windows 2000. I've run Norton, Ad-aware, and SpyBot to make sure my machine is clean.
Anybody have any ideas on what to try? I think they're probably going to tell me to reinstall the operating system next. TIA for any help you can give me.

BTW, didn't I hear/read that gazzillions of Windows 2000 users were hit during the week by hackers? Might be somthin' Norton hasn't been updated for ......yet.
Hah! I just noticed my number of posts: That was the processor used in the 1st Zenith PC we used in the military, way back in the middle 80's!

She could download Firefox, but with her slow dial up she'll have to let it run all night. That's one reason I have not done it at home just yet.

It could be, but I can't even connect to Microsoft's site from that computer TO download a fix. I'll have to surf from this one and see what I can find. It's annoying as hell, let me tell you!
Good old 8088's. I think the first one I ever touched (PC wise) was an 8086.

You could just reinstall windows. It sounds as if some files IE needs to run are missing or damaged. Crabcake had this problem, and she about pulled her hair out and think she just resorted to reinstalling windows.
I think IE is a PITA, which is why I use Firefox. I had problems like this every few weeks with IE. :boo:

Yes, at 26.4 connection, that would take FOREVER. I'd actually have to download it to my laptop, burn it to a CD, and then insert it into the other machine. :banghead:

Tried it in safe mode. Wouldn't connect at all.
This laptop is XP and the desktop is 2K. Does that make a difference when copying iexplore.exe? They're both IE6.

Jazz,
Try a hard shutdown (just turn the power off) and then turn it back on and let the OS do a scandisk, afterwards do a defrag. Then uninstall IE and then reinstall it. If nothing else this will kill time before you decide to reload Windows.

I don't understand it either. I have Norton Internet 2005 with a renewal date of 11/22/2005. The more I dig into this problem, the more I'm confused as to what is going on with that machine.
Earthlink just told me I need to download and install IE6 Service Pack 1, which is at LEAST 25 MB. I wonder how long THAT will take with my crappy dial-up? :cussing:

Maybe Ken can do the math on the time required to download it, at the speeds you're talking about.
But in any case, you should have ample time to put a slight dent in that new bottle of wine.
Kick back and fire up the DVD player!

I run dial-up and it takes about 1:15 to download a 25MB file. Go for it, your alternative is to reload the OS. Oh, I'm getting 40,000bps so with your slow connect rate it might be 2:00.

Try copying the iexplore.exe from one machine to the other...:shrug:Ok, THIS is bizarre. I copied IE from my laptop to a CD so I could copy it to the other machine. I renamed the old iexplore.exe to iexplore.exe.bak on the desktop "just in case" I wanted to go back. By the time I tried to copy the NEW version from the laptop, another copy iexplore.exe was already there even though the .bak one was there, too. AND it was an OLDER version.
I swear to all that's holy this PC is possessed. :banghead:

Unless you get a "*.*" file is corrupt or missing with the warning about IE being damaged, copying files probably won't work.. for one, you'd have to read WHERE the file was supposed to be it was trying to read, and replace it to that directory..
I would agree with whoever mentioned Windows being corrupt NOT IE.. Especially since you've mentioned uninstalling and re-installing IE... DO you ahe the win2000 CD? Try to do a repair of WIndows.. I've never had it work, but I'm sure it will work for SOMEbody sometime.. Other then that, if you don't want to lose all your data, or copy all of your data files when you re-install windows, buy another hard drive.. doesn't have to be anything big.. but put the new one in, install Windows on it.. and use it as your boot drive.. all your data will still be on your old drive, with all the programs installed still working.. and you'll have a connection to the internet..
I'd suggest WINXP.. call me if you need it!!
Other then those two options.. you'll have to format your drive, and re-install Windows.

I did that before, but it was older OS (98 and 95, I think) and it was a pain in the butt. You had to have a null cable and setting up a master and a slave, etc.
I'll give that a shot and see if it works. I have plenty of USB cables, but I'm not sure if I have an ethernet cable lying around.

Jazzy, without going back to the beginning, don't you have a Dell? Whatever the case, can't you pull out your paperwork and call for IT support, even if it isn't Dell? I had, what sounds like a very similar problem a little over a year ago. A virus got me... I had to reinstall my O/S... I lost everything - luckily you haven't... I know you've probably already thought of all of this, just remembered that we went through a safe mode for data retrieval (which none of mine could be saved) then scrap and dump....

Jazz - I'm having the same issue, both with IE and Firefox. I never even use IE, but since Firefox has been hosing up I resorted to it. After a restart either will run okay for 10 minutes or so, and then get that error and shut down. Sometimes, though, even the restart won't do the trick and I can't get it fixed. I reloaded the OS yesterday and it didn't do a GD thing.

What do you mean by reloading the OS? Did you do a repair, did you install over the old copy?? If it is a virus, you should format the harddrive before doing a re-install of the OS.. If you have the time, a low level format is bestest. SO when your computer asks "Do you want to fomat the drive?" during the install you would answer yes (though this isn't a low level format, it's better then installing over the old copy)

I think what Vrai is getting at is, there is a crossover ethernet cable(normally yellow) that can be used to transfer files from one PC to another.
Good idea, Vrai!!
My old computer was a 2K and my new one is an XP. All I used was the regular ethernet cable, hooked them together, set them to share, and transferred the files. Piece o'cake.

Hello McFly! I said I got the crossover cable but don't know how to set it up. I figured it would be easier to ask then to look it up myself, but I can see know that isn't the case.:roflmao: too tired to type all of it out so here is a cut and paste...
For starters, you’ll need to purchase a crossover cable and connect it to the Ethernet port of each PC. Next, each PC’s Ethernet adaptor needs to be configured with a static IP address and a common Subnet mask. For our example, we’ll assign the first PC an IP address of 192.168.0.1 and the second PC an address of 192.168.0.2. Both machines should use the Subnet 255.255.255.0.
Also, you’ll want to make sure that both machines have been configured as members of the same workgroup. Any name will work for the workgroup name as long as it doesn’t exceed 15 characters (ex.WORKGROUP). All that’s left to do now is reboot the system. Upon reboot, go to a DOS prompt and try to Ping the other PC. To do this, just type PING and the IP address of the system you’re trying to reach (ex. C:\>PING 192.168.0.2). You should get 5 replies.
If for some reason your Ping returns a timeout message, you might have another problem. The most common issue has to do with Windows XP and the Internet Connection Firewall (http://sbc.webopedia.com/TERM/I/ICF.html) (ICF). The Windows XP Network Setup Wizard will sometimes enable ICF on your Ethernet adapter. ICF is designed to protect you from threats outside of your network by blocking unauthorized traffic from reaching your PC.
ICF is supposed to be used only on the interface that directly connects to your Internet connection; however, if ICF is being used on an interface that is being used to connect to another PC, it will block all the transmissions being sent to it. It will not even respond to pings. As a result, ICF must be disabled in order for this to work. To disable ICF, simply right-click on “My Network Places” and select Properties. Right-click on your LAN connection and then select Properties again. Go to the Advanced tab and uncheck the box that reads “Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.” Click OK. Now try to ping the other PC again. It should work fine.

Debe trabajar bien.
Trate esto fuera.

if you do a GOOGLE on the process name .. it will lead you to a website that will tell you what steps to take to get rid of it, or tell you that it is a legitimate process, and who owns it.. it also gives 'key sollutions" likehow to wipe it out of the registry.. one told me to go to their website (of the varmint process) and ask for an uninstall..
