Ok so Ive got the wireless broadband on my work laptop, seems fairly quick. I'm curious if there is anyway to get wireless for a house computer.... eventually leading into hooking up to my Xbox 360. I need high speed so I'm wondering if anyone has tried anything like this

I have verizon DSL with wireless. Have my desktop hooked up to the dsl/wireless router, and my laptop works off the wireless. All works great.

For the XBOX. we did it one of two ways.. had the house set up wirelessly and the Wireless Router/ Modem next to where the X-Box was, so it was "Wired" to the router.. to go wireless you have to buy a special Wireless Gaming Adaptor, either from X-Box, or one that is X-Box compatible (go to Staples ask for Brian, he'll point you in the right direction) IF the 360 has a USB port, you might try the USB wirless adaptor ($39) I have it hooked up to my laptop and it works very well!
If you do go to Staples, tell Brian what you want to do, and he will tell you everything you need to buy (NOT commission sales at Staples, he won't sell you more then you need). Home networks are EASY!

Yeah they make all the wireless router stuff for the XBOX. My problem is they do not offer any high speed service where I live. They don't have DSL around here, or cable........ guess i'm outa luck

One of these days they'll have wireless highspeed that you don't need a modem or router for. You just have a wireless network card in your PC or laptop, log onto your account that you pay a monthly fee for, and voila - you're online no matter where you are.
Verizon already has it in some markets and I dream of the day when it's nationwide. :sigh: You figure your cellphone can connect almost anywhere in the US - why can't your wireless network card?

I think we are still some years away from a totally wireless structure. Until we get the protocols worked out, bandwidth will still be an issue with wireless.

The verizon wireless works great... at times. Usually around the city my laptop is just as fast as being hooked up to the server in the office. Once I get away from the city it starts to lag a bit. I might check out the direct tv see what they say

I'm in the same situation you are mag. No cable, no DSL, in fact, I think the phone lines run through to barbed wire fence on our road. I looked into Direc Way a while back, and except for the equipment purchase, it sounds like the way to go in the boonies. Now that I have income, maybe I can convince my better half that we really, truely need broadband. Thanks for posting the info. I think if I do go with them, I'll opt for the purchase up front.

Also, don't expect to see the speeds that they are adverstising. If you start to d/l a huge file, the system controller will cut your throughput until it equals the throughput of every other user. It's not static. Also, you may lose connections when it rains or snows, just like directtv.

I'm not a gamer and don't download large files. I just want a better connection than the 21.6kbs-24kbs that I usually get. I have to stop the page from loading on eBay if there are more than a couple preview pics. I currently have Dish TV and can count on one hand how many outages we've had in the last 2 years. Is DirecWay more sensitive? I can't imagine there being many outages, as it would kill their business.

I've had very few problems with DirecTV in bad weather. There has to be a strong lightning cloud directly between the dish and the sat. to cause problems. The problem with DirecWay is that you get good download speeds and crappy upload speeds. If I'm going to drop that kind of money, it had better work in both directions.

Had it a couple of years until cable was available down here.(recently) The download speeds are off the hook but the upload speeds suck.
The dish is still on my house, and I have the modem and all hardware and software. If anyone wants it, and can uninstall it without tearing my house down, come and get it. It's yours.

It's so rural...
It's so rural that "rush hour" is 0800-0900 Sunday mornings when all the neighbors hitch up their buggies and head to Prayer Meeting.
Seriously, we are in the Loveville area not serviced by DSL or Cable.

I have the profesional or whatever its called set up in my house. No cable to the area. I have a static IP that comes included with the pro version.
Down loads speed is ussually around 800 or so kpbs which is fine. Upload is still only around 150kpbs. It is expensive to install and pretty high monthly. My wife and son use it for online courses. It's nice not to have to disconnect when calls come in and we did need something faster than the 28-33 kbps we were getting through dial up. It went out last night in the snow and i did not check it this morning.
I have wireless set up and frequently have three users running at once.
I'd like to have cable but no luck there.

I have DWAY professional w/static ip and let me tell you save your money.......If it wasn't for work requiring me to have it I would have trashed it long ago.......Its very unstable, terrible throughput, the worse tech support you will ever find, very costly and terrible uploads.(5-20kbps) Now it will "appear" your getting good download speeds with results being 800-1400kbps but that is so misleading because the latency is so bad 700-1200ms that at times its as bad as dialup. If I were you I would go with the wireless service from Verizon. Just think with in the next few years Verizon FIOS will be available to all and these horrible companies that say they offer Broadband will be bankrupt and we'll all be happy!

Here is a copy of the reply I got from the EVDO company, I guess I am going to wait until someone else tries it on the XBOX first
For starters, rest assured - we will match any price you find. *But we will never beat a price since we offer the highest support and value*.
Have you used EVDO and XBox Together YET? While what you want CAN BE DONE... depending on the nature of your games, EVDO's LATENCY m-a-y pose some problems for you. It commonly specs out at 180-380ms delay.
That Said, In General, while we are Verizon and Sprint Authorized Agents, we can increase the EVDO Coverage Area and Speed that Verizon or Sprint Offers for you.
This is how its done,
Start with Our Top Of the line SuperCharged! EVDO V650 with Verizon Service. It is $349. It's guaranteed to work at 2000kbps+. With its optimized antenna design and radio system structure, you will get another 3-4 miles FARTHER EVDO Reach than the 5220 - and strong building penetration.
http://evdo-coverage.blogspot.com/2005/04/kyocera-v650-vs-novatel-v620-vs.html
If you'd prefer the lowest Price, we offer the same V620 without SuperCharged! EVDO at $149.
Then, for the greatest coverage area boost and signal strength, Our EVDO Lightning Rod delivers 4-5 ADDITIONAL coverage MILES / double building penetration for $189. So, Even when you are within the published EVDO Areas.... 1 bar is boosted to 2-3 bars so you get faster EVDO.
http://evdo-coverage.blogspot.com/2005/06/evdo-lightning-rod-jolts-v620-v650-and.html
To get another 400%-600% more EVDO range and penetration, Just add an EVDO Coverage Power AMP. It runs $585 and has both Vehicle and Office Mounts.http://flickr.com/photos /53015775@N00/11485790/in/set -282569/
Now, to Share EVDO with over 25 users over WIFI, The EVDO Router is Industrial MIS Grade at $988. It comes with port forwarding, nat table, radius server compatibility, 10 unique loggings, session tracking, etc. you'll find screen captures at http://hacks.wirelessinternetcoverage.com - under the hardware section. And we just put up a special bundle price package up at http://evdo-coverage.com/evdo-v650-lightning-rod-router.html
You have a 15 day money back So Feel free to try it out for 15 days at https://evdo.sslpowered.com/kpc650-lightning-rod-bundle.htm
Let me know if you need anything else... I am here all day thx!... bob

If you are talking Verizon DSL.. I do know somebody that has it WAAAY south in St Mary's County.. RIDGE even. Who'd-a-thunk eh?
I only know this because they ran into an installation problem (their CD drive was tits-up) I went by and fixed it, and finished the install for them. so yes, I can verify that it is here, and it does work.

You know that the Central Office (CO) is located off of route 5 in ridge. It is located where the red and white tower is with the little white building in the front. The front door says verizon.

I think there is confusion in this thread with respect to wireless. The original thread is referring to Verizon Wireless EVDO service. This service uses cell tower along with a PCMCIA laptop card to provide high speed internet. I know the EVDO works in Wildewood, Hollywood and Ridge and I'm sure the Park.
