Where did you find a split tank? I have looked all over and can't seem to locate one. I've also been on the hunt for a lily plant to grow on top and nobody seems to have those either.

For the split tank, Walmart? I've seen little split tanks there...

Not sure about the lily. Maybe Lowe's?

I had one against my will in the early 90's.

I had this whole aquarium setup in my house. It was beautiful, the water had perfect pH and salinity, and all my tropical fish, including angelfish, clownfish, discuss, guppies, mollies, snails...

And my roommate noticed that I didn't have any blue fish in the tank, and decided to help out by introducing a nice beautiful blue betta to the tank.

Am I correct that Betta's do not get along with any other fish?

You are correct.

In fact, another name for Betta is "Siamese Fighting Fish"

They're sold in those little individual fishbowls for a reason.

Actually Bettas will get along fine with other peaceful fish. But they are extreemly territorial when it comes to other male bettas.

The split tank isn't the best of ideas because the bettas can see each other and will always be in a state of aggression. It also means that if one gets a disease the other will probably get it too. If its the kind of tank where the water is common between both sides. I dont think I have ever seen one where both sides are completely isolated.

I put a mirror in front of mine once and a while to watch him flare up but only for 15 minutes or so cause it tires the little guy out.

That's what I was told too, but it didn't stop my betta from systematically murdering the other fish in the tank over a period of a few weeks. :killingme

My mom had one for about a week. It looked a little sick one day and she got so upset that when he got better, she gave him to her BFF so she wouldn't have to go through that again. She sees him on Fridays and every other Wednesday.

He's still alive! :yahoo:

We had 2, in a split tank for about 2 weeks. I looked and one of them had died. I took him out, cleaned out the tank, and put the other one back in, then he died that night. I took the partition out and cleaned everything and now have one betta in there. He seems to be doing alright, but he wont eat anything but blood worms. The food they told me to get at Petsmart, he turns his nose up at it. Today, I tried to feed him and he didnt eat, but he was swimming around the tank like he was on speed. Hope he lives :ohwell:

I've had Betta fish many times over the years. They definately will fight other betta's but also anything with a "vail tail" like flashy guppies, or vail tail gold fish. Anything that's flashy, they take issue with. Otherwise, they require a warmer than usual tank temperature. Normally, they require 80 degrees' whereas other tropical fish do best at around 76-78 degrees. If they get too cold, they can become stressed and develope "swim bladder" and you'll end up watching them die a slow death. So if you are creating a "community tank", with other species of tropical fish, make sure you don't have anything too large or flashy. Even Angel fish are too fancy to share a tank safely with a betta. Just my humble opinion and experiences. :coffee:

Bettas attack any fish with too much color or with flourishy tails. Perhaps they will not attack goldfish, mollies or snails. But fish like anglefish, rainbows and suckermouths are like big moving bullseyes for bettas.

I wouldn't put a betta in with any other fish unless you knew exactly what you were doing.

I have 2, one at work and one at home. Clean their tanks maybe once a month and feed them every other day or every 3 days. Both I've had for over 6 months; my last one lived for over 3 years. I guess they like the neglect:shrug:

Sounds like me and plants... Any house plant that I've bought had died within 2 months. The lady we bought our house in Mechanicsville from left me like 6 potted plants. I watered them once every 2-3 weeks and they did great. We moved to Lusby and in the fuss of unpacking I put them all in the Florida room and forgot about them. The Florida room is just now getting attention; it's been the "dumping" grounds. I found them all in a box by the window; every single one still alive. They've been there since October with no water and little sun. Not to mention the Florida room was an addition to the house and has an independant heater that was rarely turned on all winter so it was cold as hell back there. They were in bad shape but all still alive. I cut them back to the root, watered them and put them in the windows.

As for bettas. I had several in my younger days but they never lasted terribly long. I also had a 10 gallon tank with other tropical fish that I had one in for a while. He never bothered the other fish.

I'm currently just maintaining the fish I have. My enormous Pleco is still up for grabs if anyone has a large enough tank for him (like 50+). He's healthy, super spastic, and scares the ever loving crap out of me.

Get a saltwater aquarium. We have two. How much fun is that???? I don't have anything to do with them and if hubby were to die tomorrow, I'd give them to the first taker. They are pretty, though. And stuff keeps growing out of the live rocks. First nothing, then you have stuff you wouldn't believe growing in your living room.

I noticed that my Betta was aggressive to other males and colorful fish, regardless of their breed. I could put in some plain female guppies and the Betta would leave them alone.

"Elfish" is not doing good. :bawl: He won't eat the ampicillin, and you're not supposed to feed them anything else while you're giving them the medicine. So he basically hasn't eaten since Sunday.

I've been noticing that for the past couple weeks, the betta water has been evaporating WAY quicker than it normally does. Yesterday I was off work, and I was in the bedroom when I heard a funny noise, so I crept into the kitchen and found my cat up on the counter drinking out of the betta's vase. :smack: I guess he likes his betta-flavored tea instead of the fresh water that's in his bowl.
