I'm having problems with mushrooms (large ones) attaching themselves and growing next to my flowers. Besides their ugly appearance, is it harmful to my flowers?

Also, there's like a mushroom-type fungus growing in two of my flower beds. It's gross looking. It looks like someone threw-up. When I was watering my flowers last night with the hose, purple 'smoke' started pouring from this mold stuff (when the water hit it). What the heck is that and is it harmful?? :eyebrow:

Well, I *think* that I've found this answer to this question. It might be a slime mold called Fuligo septica. :barf:

I'm not sure how to prevent it, but I was told that using lime works.

I finally figured out what was making/digging holes in my lawn! Box turtles!! I saw one yesterday. Damn thing was eating a mushroom, and went all the way to the roots, digging till he got every last bit! Pretty cool to see and I learned something. I didn't know what Box turtles ate. Now I know.

No, they're not harmful to the flowers but I would pick them out before they reproduce:

Your mushrooms won't hurt anything, but if you consider them unsightly, simply remove them with a spade or pick them by hand and either turn them under the soil or throw them in the compost pile. The mushroom is actually the reproductive structure of the larger fungus growing under ground. Try and remove them before they mature and have the chance to release their reproductive spores. This will help you reduce the population, but unless you can remove the stump from your flowerbed completely, you'll probably see more mushrooms in the future. They grow on decaying matter and in moist conditions; an old stump provides the perfect mushroom feast. On the bright side, the site of mushrooms growing in your garden is a sign that your soil is rich in organic matter.

It's definitely a slime mold like you said and the smoke is caused by the spores being released like MMDad said. It's a harmless fungal growth that grows usually during hot, humid summer weather like we're having now. If it's growing on mulch, just turn it with a garden fork. You can wash it off if it bothers you or try lightly dusting it with lime to kill it. It will go away on its own when dry weather returns.

:lol: I have a box turtle living in the mud pond my one dog created in the yard by his constant pacing. I thought the turtle had got stuck in the mud and died there, but when I went to remove it from the muck it stuck its head out at me and flailed its legs so I let it be. I think it's eating the frogs and tadpoles that are also in there. :shrug:

It's a harmless fungal growth that grows usually during hot, humid summer weather like we're having now. If it's growing on mulch, just turn it with a garden fork. I'm glad I saw this the other day. The other half called me a bit ago say there was what looked like whipped cream underneath the grass in the back yard in a bunch of places. I'm guessing that it's probably the same stuff. We have a TON of moss everywhere as well and we've had a lot of mushrooms too. :jameo:
