I currently have Earthlink Dial up for $22 bucks a month, and was wondering if anyone could offer any suggestions on a comparable high-speed dial up isp for a lower price per month?
What does everyone think of Netzero? I did the search and saw a few reviews, but nothing too recent, so I'm also wondering if the ISP has improved any....
PS---I live in the boonies, so dsl/broadband/cable isn't available, and I can't afford to shell out the $100 a month for the satellite internet.
Thank in Advance! :howdy:

I can't get DSL or Cable out here in Clements. That leaves only three options.
1. SOMDWireless (http://www.somdwireless.com) $45/Month. Unfortunately, there is an installation fee of $200 (May pay the install fee in installments). If you are in range - you can get DSL type speed.
2. WildBlue Satellite (http://www.wildblue.com/) $49/Month. Seems to be the cheapest (and free installation). Unfortunately, you must buy the equipment and that runs $299!
3. Verizon BroadBandAccess (http://solutions.vzwshop.com/bba/) $59.99/Month plus a $45.00 card. That is what I'm running. All you need is a PCMCIA slot on your laptop to get EV-DO access.
Hope this helps.

We can't get dsl and have peoplepc at $20.90 a month. Their accelator works very good. I had broadband at work and my home loads almost as fast as broadband. Just too cheap to get Comcast.

Keep calling them every couple of weeks...They upgrade a lot...I think you have to be a certain distance from a sub station and they expand that distance often...

EV-DO is all over the place around here. If you have a new Verizon Cell Phone - take a look at the front screen and see if you se EV-DO. If you do - you have access. Jump over to: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/promotion/controller?promotionType=miniPac&action=miniStart
and select "coverage map." It will pop up a window. Enter your zip code and select "BroadbandAccess & V CAST"

What area of the county do you live in? I was thinking of doing Hughesnet, but since I live back in the woods I'm not sure how well it will work?

If your desktop has a PCMCIA slot - you are fat city! If not, you can buy a PCMCIA slot for your desktop. You are limited to 5GB per month usage and can't do movie, music, etc. streaming (it is in the contract). Well, you can stream but you will exceed 5GB pretty quickly... Surfing and mail are its main purpose.

You can do it through a BroadbandAccess-capable phone with a USB cable. You're not supposed to do that, but you can

Do ya'll turn your computers off? They guy says the modem doesn't need to be turned off, HughesNet has it's own firewalls. Is that true? My inclination is to turn the computer off every night.

I have hughes.net and yeah, they have their own firewall. I turn off my computers at night just to be on a safer side. I think most of the ppl aim trouble at "always connected" computers, try their stuff at night when no one is watching. Plus, it lets my laptop and desktop 'chill out'. I like hughes, though on nights like tonight, it's slower with more ppl on the satelite, just like any other bandwidth sharing problems. typical connection speed during the daytime hours are 800 to 1.2 which is comparable to DSL, for those of us not able to get DSL. I used to have dial up at the miserable speed of 26.4 at the highest!

problem with that thought process (hackers aiming only at night) is it's night at different times around theworld
I'm going to get my firewall back up and operational.
Oh, if you decide to get satelite internet..whatever company you go with, I'd suggest NOT letting them sell you the "included" installation on the rooftop. It will cost more to plant the pole in the ground but much more worth it. Our weather here in MD is too windy and snowy to have your dish up on a roof. I've had to go out and brush off the snow on my dish to recieve a signal on a snowday. If it had been up on the roof, it might have had to melt off! No kidding. AND... if you do have it already mounted, Hughes' will charge you upwards of 300 dollars to "remove" installed dish to re install it on the ground and then charge you for that installation too! (advice from a hughes technician)
regardless of whatever you are using... dial up is a dog and dsl is very limited. If it comes in my neighborhood, and my service contract is up with hughes, I'd probably go over to DSL. If nothing else, it's cheaper!
Netzero is crap, thats the only advice I can give ya.
