View Full Version : Projection TV's
Anyone out there have a projection TV? I am talking the kind where you have a screen on the wall and across the room mounted on the ceiling there is a projector?
They claim the picture quality is near LCD/Plasma and the screen sizes go up in the 100 inch area for about $2K. they even have technology now that the projector doesn't have to be aligned with the screen. It can be off in a corner and still fit the screen in a perfect rectangle/size.

I don't own one, but I would imagine the bulb could get pricey. I mess with Epson projectors at work, and I beleive they cost a couple hundred bucks to replace. It is nice to play games with life size characters. :yay:

The biggest that I have seen advertised was 73". The Price was around $4K.

...one at Ashley furniture recently and my new best friend and I lounged and watched the game while the women shopped. He was a painter, put a projection in his basement and no longer uses his 50-60" rear projectin anymore. Says the picture is AWESOME. What we saw was real good.
I can't find it on their web site and I don't remember the details. My point is that it seems like a viable option from what little I know.

Int eh corner out of the way. All that is in there is the surround sound crap.

I am not sure I want to risk $1600 as a test bed, but watching football on a 100 inch screen with the TV hanging on the wall does sound good.

Have a friend with a projection TV. You really want to sit back a little from it for the best picture. Think about how close your seating is to that wall. From the sofa it would be okay but the loveseat or chairs...a little iffy.

We had one in the house we rented in NC for our vacation.. We had a "Media Room" that had no windows, and stadium seating. Picture and sound were AWESOME and the picture was as big as you wanted it, in this instance it covered the width of the viewing wall.
Technology has brought the prices of the units down considerably, as well as not needing as much space. You can cover a 9 ft wide wall without having to have the projector 15 feet from the wall. Companies make projecor mounts that retract into your ceiling so there is no sign of anything in your room until you actually want to watch something, and you can be immersed in video games..
I've thought about it a lot, but waiting for someone else to take the plunge to see how it works out, but can say the media room in the NC house was a big hit.

That is what I am wondering. I have windows near that wall. Will sunlight into the room wash out the screen?
The article says over 1000 lumens will not wash out with sunlight and I could put heavier curtains over that window for daytime light issues.
If the projector were mounted on the ceiling there wouldn't be an issue of people walking through the "beam" and goofing the picture either.

He has windows all around the room and it's ok during the day. It also helps to have a high quality screen...a white sheet just won't cut it. Apparently, there is also a paint that you can get so that you can project directly onto the wall and get good results.

I read that a screen is almost a neccessity. They are about $200 and even come motorized so it will roll/fold up if you want. the screens have a special surface that helps the picture.

No I am selling it because after he wanted it and I got it, he decided it wasn't as fun as he thought it would be. It sat in the garage and he would say "I am bored", I would reply "Go ride the 4 wheeler you wanted so bad." He would take 3 laps around the back and park it. "I am bored again" :burning:

We are impressed. As most of you well know - we are in an RV, so there are windows everywhere and impossible to black out. It shows very well on the screen that we made. We bought a styrofm sheet from Lowes, cut it down to fit inside one of our slideouts, covered it with some pure white drapery material bought from JoAnns, pinned it tight - and it looks wonderful. Hubby measured last night and estimate that we have over a 70" tv. It is just slightly grainy, but keep in mind that we are only, maybe, 8 feet away from the screen. For those into electronics - this website kicks azz. OK, a lunchtime trip to Best Buy left me luke warm to the front projection idea. To get a quality projector is going to be $1,500 to $2,000. Then there is the mounting it to the ceiling, questions about hook ups to my older home theater and the washout from the sunlight through the windows and so on.
After studying and comparing I may have made a decision on a rear projection 56 inch HD ILP form JVC. The viewable angles are great, no blacking out and you move to the side, crystal clear picture, 70lbs.
$1,899 for the TV. $400 for 4 year in home service plan covers cleaning, alignment, mirror calibration-polishing, free in home set up/calibration.
So basically $2400 for to the door service, 4 year in home service, and 56 inches of TV bliss. They also are doing 0% interest until 2010. Typically I would pay cash but hell free money for 3 year? why not

Pete, check out Theater Extreme. Giker just bought a 140" screen, projector, 6 theater style seats, new sofa, love seat, the works basically. They went to his house, measured the room, analyzed it for sound and designed him a system to fit, all for much cheaper than I imagined it would be.
The picture quality was quite impressive. Naturally the first thing that he wants to watch on it is porn.
They have systems for every budget, and you buy as much or as little as you want, but their systems seemed to be cheaper, and higher quality with a better backing than what is available from best buy and the like. :yay:

They had them all, Sony, Toshiba, JVC and Panasonic. The picture on the JVC was great, screen size great and the fact you didn't have to be directly in front of it was great. You could walk way off the the left or right and it was still great. that is what sold me on the JVC if I do get one.

Pete, are you looking for a TV (flat panel) that you can hang on the wall? Do you want a monitor or a TV? Meaning do you want to hear it from the TV or do you have speakers around the room. I can do a 42" Pioneer plasma for a good deal.
Ok, the deed is done. Stopped by Sears on the way home and they had several models. I really liked the picture on the 50 inch Samsung DLP. Right next to it was a 56 inch Toshiba DLP. My livingroom is not that big so I ruled out the 56 inch.
So the guy said he would price match, he went to the internet and checked Best Buy, and the 50 inch Samsung DLP was the same price. He went to Circuit City's web site and it was $1299. He matched Circuit City's price plus 10% of the difference so I got the Samsung 50 inch DLP HDTV for $1270.00

Yup. It was bad. I don't have the DLP (Projection) ratings, but the Plasma and LCD TV ratings have Samsung among the lowest. Ya never know though dude. Even the highest rated ones have issues...luck of the draw. No problems with my Toshiba though, after 3 years, lots of dust and moving it from corner to corner, to bedroom to porch, while doing work in the LR.

Flo bought the 42" model. Soon after, the lamp burnt out. Repair man came and put a new lamp in. Soon after that, he got a Thermal Lamp Error or something. Sears replaced the TV. BUT, he had purchased the Service plan. I don't know what difference that may have made in the repair/replacement of his TV though. You might want to ask some quetsions. The service plans are expensive and frequently go unused, but they can save alot of heartache if you should need it.

I orginally was going to get the LCD and then I saw turned around and saw XBox 360 demos on a 61" tv. I immediately nutted in my pants and told the sales person I want the bigger rear projection instead. It's coming thursday.

Typically I would pay cash but hell free money for 3 year? why not
Free money is good stuff. Just make sure you pay any amount of money every month on it, anyway. I mean like $5. While you don't have a minimum payment, it looks like a debt on your credit report that hasn't been paid in months and can lower you credit. So, pay something every month. It doesn't matter what. That way it looks like you have paid steady on it. :yay:

:yay: I am not sure if it is 0 payments? I know it is 0% int. I planned on dropping some chunks of cash periodically. I got 0% on my truck too, free money is good. :yay:

I read that first blip on the first page of the link you posted, and already, I call Bullchit.
I have a Toshiba Rear projection TV in my Living room (Your articles says that this is bad on Page 1) and I have no trouble viewing mine from any angle.
Rear projection technology has changed and the old viewing angle problem of 10 years ago, is gone.
I read no further in the article than that. Should I?
Do your own tests at the store, and read CUSTOMER REVIEWS, not recycled "news". :yay:

Hey MM... I think this is what you are looking for. PT got all bent about the link because he didn't agree with the brand selections. I didn't post the link as a "recommendation"... I posted it because it gives a pretty good summary as to the differences in TV types.
