Cleared: Jury decides that threat of global warming justifies breaking the law - Climate Change, Environment - The Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/cleared-jury-decides-that-threat-of-global-warming-justifies-breaking-the-law-925561.html)
The threat of global warming is so great that campaigners were justified in causing more than £35,000 worth of damage to a coal-fired power station, a jury decided yesterday. In a verdict that will have shocked ministers and energy companies the jury at Maidstone Crown Court cleared six Greenpeace activists of criminal damage.
Jurors accepted defence arguments that the six had a "lawful excuse" to damage property at Kingsnorth power station in Kent to prevent even greater damage caused by climate change. The defence of "lawful excuse" under the Criminal Damage Act 1971 allows damage to be caused to property to prevent even greater damage – such as breaking down the door of a burning house to tackle a fire.

I read this story earlier and was freaked out. England is a nation of laws except when some nutcase says the law doesn't apply to them because they're looking out for the greater good?
Well, we do have to remember the story of Robin Hood was based in England.

Was Britain really worth saving? Twice?
Is a British invention anyway. We can thank Margaret Thatcher for that one.

...I wasn't aware.
However, getting into this;
The year was 1988, almost a decade into her 11-year reign as prime minister. She told the scientists that three changes in atmospheric chemistry—greenhouse gases, the ozone hole and acid emissions from power plants—warranted not just good science to resolve uncertainties, but also government action to diminish pollution and promote sustainable development.
...I'm not reading hysteria, but sound thoughts on addressing problems, not chicken little, we're all gonna die.
It is absolutely proper to address problems, be it C02 emissions, acid rain, whatever, but do it in the context of practical, reasonable solutions; not hysterics.
I'll keep reading, but I am not seeing Al Gore in Thatcher just yet.

The original theory was from a fringe scientist and when it surfaced nearly all mainstream scientists found it laughable. Man's contribution to CO2 in the atmosphere is so small when compared to the contributions from volcanoes, plants and especially the oceans, it's doubtful man could effect anything, let alone climate, by producing CO2. But Thatcher had a problem and a plan.
The previous government had been brought down by a devastating and violent coal mine strike and another strike came along as she was in office. Being determined to break the cycle of labor, a large part of it being coal miners, reeking such havoc and ultimately dictating terms to the government, she was determined to move the country away from coal as a power source.
Not trusting Middle Eastern oil as a power source that would produce stability , she wanted to move Britain toward nuclear energy in a major way. The strongest selling point was that nuclear energy was clean and she seized upon the CO2 theory, reasoning that if she could increase concern over coal, she'd be able to implement plans to begin building nuclear reactors.

Hi Larry
Though I sided with the Argentines over the Malvinas, I thought Maggie Thatcher was a great throwback to the days of Victoria when GB was an empire. She was tough, strong and yet a lady (reminds you a bit of Sarah P.)
Now some of their politicoes and so called "comedians" are urging us to vote fo Obama, Makes you wonder why they don't get Obama to renounce his questionable claim to American citizenship and run for office over there. After all, they love him. Or is it, they love him because he isn't running over there?

...that you somehow thought I was equating Thatcher with Gore. Never in a million years could Gore even approach Thatcher's shadow in intelligence, leadership or wisdom. However, Thatcher commissioned the concept and lead the vilification of mankind as the villain in global warming. And it was done to break the back of organized labor.

...we're clear. The way I took it initially was that she was the mother of the nuts; she's not. Labor AND energy independence were her goals in addition to addressing pollution. :buddies:

...thoughts! Perhaps this is all yet another British plot to grease our further decline!
