Anyone ever done the 'Big Red Boat'? We are leaving at the end of January to go on the cruise. Wanted to hear some experiences, and other such things. Things that are must do's and dont's.

uhh..wasn't the big red boat decomissioned? that used to be the disney cruise ship way back, but they now have their own line of ships. i did the big red boat twice (after it was no longer disney...once looney tunes, once sea animals), but never the newer disney cruises. which are you referring to?

I have been on one of the Disney Boats. I thought the Big Red Boat was a different one.

It was great. My kids liked the Ship better than Disney World. When you board run down to the daycare facility and they give you a pager. If they have any issues when they have your kids they page you. It also works while at the Castaway Key Island and at the other ports as well.
It was awesome!!!!!!!

We did the Disney Magic a few years ago. It was awesome. And we didn't even have any kids with us. Now, when my daughter is a little older I am definately going to book a trip again with them.

Was on 'The Big Red Boat' twenty years ago. As another poster said, thought they were not in service any longer??? Disney now has the Wonder and Magic ships. Was on the Wonder this past July, great cruise. Don't miss the entertainment.

Aha! I have an answer. The Big Red Boat I was on was the Oceanic...I guess after Premier cruiselines shut down in 2000, they sold the ships...

The Oceanic (Big Red Boat I) is still sailing today for Spain based Pullmantur Cruises. The Big Red Boat II, formerly Eugenio Costa, was put up for sale and was laid up in Freeport, Bahamas. It had no potential buyers and remained there until 2005. It was eventually sold to the breakers and was scrapped in Alang, India in late 2005. The Big Red Boat III, formerly Carnival Cruise Line's Festivale was also sold for scrap.

OK. I only put the 'big red boat' because that is what I knew they were called at one time. I dont know "which" ship we are going on- as it was a gift from my parents (we are all going together). Sorry for any confusion.

However, we are going on the 3-4 day cruise and stopping in Nassau and Half Moon Cay.

I hear half moon cay is awesome!! You might see tiny sharks in the water. Atlantis is in Nassau if you're up for a water park. FYI - if you want to tour the aquarium at Atlantis, go after 7pm (if you'll be there). That is when the security guards close shop and go home.

Did you know they are coming out with 2 new ships in 2011 - 2012. You can expect it to be even better and with more "Magical" touches to it!!

I'm planning on a cruise in summer of 2010. How about you ?

Happy New Year!

I was reading through some of the FAQ's. Did I read right that food and drink (except alcohol) is included? So would it be just breakfast lunch and dinner or would that include snacks (basically graze all day :))

We've been on a couple cruises, and that's pretty much it - food is "free" and non-alcoholic drinks - more or less - are "free". (On some cruises, like when we went on Royal Caribbean, non-alcoholic drinks were free, but not free everywhere unless you purchased an (inexpensive) package where you got this little marked container. As long as you had that, there were infinite refills. For a long cruise, definitely worth it.) 'Free' is in quotes because it only seems free, since you paid to get on.

On the other hand, some ships have places on board where you do pay for meals. We've been on two lines - Princess and Royal Caribbean - and both of them had two main areas for meals, one slightly formal, where they seat you and one come as you are, where you seat yourself wherever you please, with distinct hours of operation. There were also small spots that served your basic stuff all the time - pizza, burgers and fries. There was a self-serve ice cream section that was open certain times of the day, and events at different eateries throughout the ship on certain days where they'd have themed food events - all "free". You can get fat and sick on a cruise if you like to eat.

But both lines also had regular restaurants where you pay, and Princess would convert their free areas at different times of the week to full service restaurants.

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure we won't be going anytime real soon. Maybe in a couple years. I've always debated between a cruise or all-inclusive vacation on an island somewhere. Kids included.

I would love to try a place like Beaches but I don't see it happening any time soon. We did take a cruise in 2006 (RCI) and our son (at the time 7) loved it - begged to go to the kids club multiple times daily. One note, since it was a family trip we were limited on our excursions - for liability issues there are age limits for many of them but I don't think they are enforced - for our snorkeling excursion there was a minimal age requirement of 8 which DS fell a few weeks shy of but no one ever questioned it. All horseback riding and ATV trails were 16 and I think the dolphin swim was 12 so we had to settle for a dolphin encounter (still lots of hands on time with the animals) and a dune buggy tour of one of the islands we visited.

My girls will be 7 and 10 this year. I guess we would be a little limited as well. I've noticed with a lot of vacations that offer horseback riding the age limit is up there. Which stinks because my girls would love to do that. I think one (or maybe all) the beaches have Sesame Street theme for kids. My girls are too old for that.

There is so much for kids to do on and off the ship! Ireland was going nuts the whole time. I cannot brag enough about the time we had! ABSOLUTELY amazing. She still talks about it till this day! We are looking at going again next spring or early summer! SO EXCITING! I love it. I dont even know where to begin with everything.

GetBent- All the food you could imagine is included- except for alcohol and anything bought at a bar.. They have the soda bars and waters and junk on one deck- where you just fill- and dont worry about paying. You also have your key to the world card that is used for everything (no cash anywhere except at certain ports). So that is handy to, just make sure you keep a budget on it- or lock it to a certain amount at guest services- then you wont go nuts. :) But they had the formal sit down dinners at night. They also had the breakfasts at the restaurants on board of the ship- and they also had the buffets. For lunch they had the grotto's everywhere. Everything from grilled stuff, to pizza to foccacia and gourmet sandwiches. Also the ice cream bars. All sorts of pools and places for kids. They also have the clubs that are geared towards the ages of kids. Your kids would be in the oceaniers club! Which is amazing. You get a run down of happenings slipped under your door every morning or night while you are at dinner.. and you will get to see the different times things are happening on the ship. You also have a pager that is connected with the serial number that is given to your kids- so that when they go to their club- you are reachable. It is great! Ireland didnt want to leave. HAHA. It is truly the magical disney experience.

Characters are EVERYWHERE. And photo- op's are everywhere. Not to mention that you dont even have to visit 'Shutters' for pictures- because they let you take your own! Half Moon Cay is amazing. Just docking in was an amazing experience- because of the Ship from 'Pirates' that you see coming in. Our room was HUGE! Granted we had a handicap accessible room- however, we were on the 6th deck- and had a MASSIVE balcony. I will upload pictures and share- so that people can see! :D We were in Nassau and Half Moon Cay and at sea one day. On the way back home to Port Canaveral we had a rough ride- we were hitting some storms and had some swells that were pretty gnarly- but.. overall that was my only bad happening.

Jesse and I went to karaoke one night- and dancing. It was great. It also helped that Ireland got to stay with my parents. But- room service- and everything was included. It was just amazing! I dont even know what else to say.

We cannot wait to go again. So exciting.
