D and I are so overwhelmed trying to figure out what we'd like to do for a honeymoon. It seems like there are just way too many options out there. We wanted to do something like drive across the country and visit lots of places, but I worry we'll get bored in the car so much. We've thought about cruises. We have considered renting a cabin. :jameo: We want to have privacy, but we also want to be able to go and do lots of fun things. We don't want to spend too much money, but we'd like to spend at least a week (preferrably 10 days or so) somewhere.
Do you think it's worth it to use a travel agent? I hate to throw money away, but maybe an agent can give us ideas and help us find good deals. Any tips? Anything to steer clear of?

CRUISE BABY!!!!
I have been on 5 and love love love them! If I would have known how fun they were before we decided on our honeymoon I would have definitely picked that! Now when ever I hear a friend or family member is going on a cruise I get sooooo jealous!

Cruises offer you everything. Not expensive and you'll talk about it forever.
Do a 7 day, 6 night western Carribbean cruise. Go scuba diving, snorkling, hiking, shows on the boat. eat yourself silly. Go to Barbados, get a flying fish sammich. :yum: It can't be beat.
Oh and what aps said. :yay:

If you can fit a cruise into your budget, that's the perfect balance between being able to do a variety of things and still having plenty of privacy. Eastern Caribbean is also nice. Just depends where you want to go. Plenty of good food, drinks, and entertainment just on the ship...let alone everything you get to do once you get off.

Yeah, we've been thinking more and more about that. Is there a line you prefer? Is there an adults only cruise? I don't want to be around lots of little kids. Do you feel rushed at the stops?

I have only been on Royal Carribean.
My parents have been on over 30 cruises and their favorites are Holland America (all the gratuity is included in the ticket prices on that line) & Royal Carribean. They have been on Carnival a few times and were not impressed w/ them (my dad did like the fact they had a tops optional pool area ) said that the food was not up to the other lines and that there were a ton of younger & teenage kids running around unsupervised.
If you book a longer cruise say 10 days then the amount of children on the boat tapers off.... but then it turns into the older crowd 50+.
I was never rushed during the stops they normally give you at least a full day in port and sometimes (depending on where you go) you will be docked over night.
I can not even say one negative thing about any of the crusises I have taken because there was nothing negative! They treat you like royalty on there. Believe me you will not be disapointed!!!

Ok, I've been looking at Royal Caribbean's website, and it looks absolutely amazing! When I go to get a price, it asks if I want the sailing or cruisetour. I can't find the difference. Do you know what it is?

i used to go to Sanibel all the time when I was younger, lotsa shells. fun place. i know some of the islands on the west coast had some access issues after the last batch of hurricanes a year ago (some bridges were damaged/destroyed) but i'm not sure if that affected Sanibel or not. They have other ways to access it, but it might be a little annoying.

We stayed at these little cabins, the walk to the beach was an all Palm Tree arch, they had a happy hour, pool. After you checked out if you wanted to stay in use the beach, you could use a reallly nice shower room to change in before leaving. Can't remember the name, but it was only 89.00 @ night:yahoo:

You know I have never gotten a quote or booked a cruise online. I just send an email or call the travel agent and tell them what date I am looking at and then they come back w/ a quote and I go from there. They will also be able to help get you upgrades and goodies.

I had found the same prices online that I got with a travel agent. I think they are paid by the resorts, etc. to send clients to them, the cost doesn't go to you and they have a lot more information and can "customize" your trip for you. Have you thought of an all-inlclusive resort? They are like being on a cruise, but not as confining, I liked having more time on the beach than I would get on a cruise. Have a great time!

PM BG.. if you know how to work the Cruise System or have an agent that knows how to work the system you can get HUGE upgrades for little or no extra. Some rooms on the boat they'll send you a price for, and you can negotiate.
I don't how true it is, but on our cruise one of the couples on the boat had one of the owner's suites.. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, private courtyard, balcony.. etc.. etc. and paid the same thing we did for our balcony on the back of the boat. Cruise company sent them a quote for the room, they sent back a note saying "No thanks, too much. We can't go any higher than 'X'" and the Cruise Company accepted their offer, about a 1/4th of what the room normally goes for.
We scored great prices on our room too, not as good as they did, but we still made out. Private Butler, Concierge, our own private dining room.. HUGE room.. yeah, BG spoils me, but I'm SOOOO worth it!

COuld be that they had cruised that line several times. I know that is what happens w/ my parents they are always upgraded to the suites. Our travel agent did get us a great room for the price so we were happy... but would have been happier w/ a butler and concierge :jet:

OR they (the cruise line) deal with that particular travel agent a lot and try to keep him or her happy with the best deals.. Our agent kept sending us updates as to offers she had available. We went from an inside cabin, to an outside with balcony to a Penthouse.
The only problem is I don't know if I'd be able to downgrade on the next cruise.. hard to go back after getting treated like royalty!

We did a Trans-Atlantic in February, 25 - 30 foot seas 50 knot winds at the half way point.
Didn't hear of any issues of people being seasick and we went to the top deck penthouses where I thought he movement would be REAL bad, and it wasn't.
The new(er) cruise ships have stabilizing wings that control the pitch of the boat. There was some rocking but not near as bad as I thought it would be. The closer to the center of the ship you are the less noticeable it is too.

a cruisetour is a land/sea combo where a sailing is just the boat portion only. You can pick excursion on any portion the land or the sea at your various destinations. If you are thinking about cruising you HAVE to visit this website (http://www.cruisecritic.com/).

Thank you!
Be sure to explore all excursion options. We read about a private tour of Chacchoben on cruisecritic which was a fraction of the ship's tour cost and we had a personal guide that was a Mayan ancestor, his family owned the land before the government took it over after the ruins were discovered.

By the front I mean the forward facing cabins on the front of the boat.
The sides and back (I LOVED the back of the boat) can be open and used ALL the time.
Back of the boat was nice because even in the high winds we were shielded from most of it. At no time was our balcony unusable because of the weather conditions.

I wouldnt think so. You can always do the $ dance as well. Book the cruise a few weeks after your wedding and you can decide how much of the money you want to put towards the cruise and do whatever w/ the rest.
Not that I advocate getting another credit card but we planned our cruise for over a year so we got a Royal Caribbean credit card – anything you put on it earns you points. We paid all our bills that we could with the credit card earning bonus reward points back – when it was time for our cruise we had over $100 in free rewards credits.

I've attended weddings in the past where the couples lived together and requested this. One of them came up with a clever little poem and included it with the inviation. I didn't think it was tacky at all. I would much rather give a gift that I know they'll enjoy, then a gift that will sit in a closet and never see daylight. Unless you are planning on moving into a new house or something where you could actually use household stuff, I think this is a good idea.

We got married in early March and we went to the Pocono's Caesar's Palace. Because it was their off season we got a great rate for a 4 day weekend in one of their best suites. It was fantastic, it had a heart shaped, heated pool in the room, and a sauna, massage table, round bed with celestial ceiling, and a champagne glass jacuzzi that was 7 1/2 ft. tall and they had a living room with a beautiful fireplace. I would have stayed there forever but the money ran out! :lmao:
They also had snow mobile rental and casino and all kinds of neat stuff to do. Everything cost about 1300.00 about 13 yrs. ago. Have no clue what it would be now. They also have smaller cabins available that is not that expensive.
Most of all make sure it memorable. And be careful about all that sex, you don't want to end up in the hospital with cystitus! :lmao:

Nothing is scheduled yet. The wedding is toward the end of May. I'd like to go on a honeymoon right after the wedding (within a day or two) because I'm worried we'll get caught up with work and the kids after and never take one.

It's also really expensive. I've looked into it a few times and was unwilling to part with that much cash.
Drive up to the Bay of Fundy for at least a week.
Stay in Alma, or in the park right next to it. Lots of walking trails through the mountains that bring you to water falls, beaches etc where you can be basically alone while walking.
you can stop on the way to it or back and take a whale watching trip, stop in Bar Harbor Maine on the way.

But the sides are ok? And by front, you mean the bow? How far back does that go? I'd love to be able to sit out on the balcony (if in fact we decide to and can afford to cruise)! :yahoo:
If you plan on cruising in May, especially in the Caribbean, it will be hot (and humid) so you might not spend as much time on the balcony as you think. My cruise last week was nice and warm during the day (80 degrees) and cool at night with some winds. Although, there was one evening just after dark that the winds picked up and I swear a tornado was heading for us. The workers were scrambling to gather all the deck chairs from the upper levels.

I've noticed that many cruise lines don't even cruise in May. :ohwell: We're still undecided. We were considering Vegas then driving to the Grand Canyon. That was last week. This week we're thinking of driving to Florida and probably staying in the Keys for a little bit. If we drive, we can stop all along the way and go to different restaurants. I'd love to see Savannah.

You could fly to Florida (it's quicker and easier than driving) then hop on a cruise ship to Florida Keys, then Cozumel. Carnival offers a 4-day to these ports and you could probably get away with the cruise and airfare for less than $1000. On your way back, stop by Orlando and visit Mickey! :dye:

Can't we drive all the way down to the last key? What is it, Big Pine or something?

Yeah, I think you're able to. But, it takes half a day to get to FL. I couldn't imagine driving to the Keys. :faint:

Yes, you can...
My aunt and uncle make the trip several times per year!
I loved Key West, very laid back and relaxing... We went in November. It was the 1st stop on a Western Carribean cruise with Carnival. I paid about $600 for the cruise itself. We drove down to Ft. Lauderdale and got on the ship there.
It was originally supposed to take off from Miami, but we did finish our cruise in Miami, and Carnival arranged bus service to the passengers to Ft. Lauderdale.
I really enjoyed the cruise.
I've also been to Vegas... We stayed @ NYNY. It was a fabulous time and I can't wait to go again.
I don't like flying, at all. I'll drive for 24 hours to avoid a flight... I've driven to TN and back - when I could have hopped a 2 hour flight. That flight to Vegas was my first and my husband was asleep before the wheels lifted off the ground. I was a mess. And the jet lag :dead: 4 days was just enough to get adjusted and then it was time to go home!!!!
Congrats BTW!! What an exciting time in your lives!

I read your post and I highly recommend a cruise. I read D will not fly and I didn't read thru all of the posts because there were so many so I don't know if anyone mentioned this to you yet or not. There are MANY cruises that leave from nearby ports like Baltimore, Philly or Norfolk so you could just drive to the port, park (or get dropped off) and cruise from there. Still all the benefits of a cruise without the hassle of flying. Perfect solution! Congrats and best wishes to you....As a travel agent I would highly suggest to you to call one in your area. It will not cost you anything additional to go through a travel agent and you get their expert advise to ensure you have a wonderful experience for your honeymoon!

CG, I would have to disagree. I booked directly through Carnival and whenever I saw a price drop, I called them directly. Cruise lines WILL NOT speak with you if you are working with a travel agent.

Cowgirl---A good Travel Agent will do the same thing for you. Normally they would hear of the special offers and price reductions before the consumer does. I have done it for my clients many times because I consider it to be part of my job. Maybe you are just not using the right agent.

Yes I do that quite often where I will put together their honeymoon package according to what they want and then they inform their guests that they can contribute to their honeymoon instead of going out and buying them some other gift. I can provide a email that I or they can forward to their guests from the couple or another option is to print out an invitation type card that they can include in their wedding invitations to let the guests know that they would prefer a contribution to the honeymoon rather than buying a gift. I personally provide certificates for the guests that do make a contribution towards the honeymoon that they can put into the wedding card to give to the couple so they have something to give to them letting them know that they made a contribution to their honeymoon. That way they have something to hand the couple on the wedding reception and don't feel like they are empty handed, so it works all the way around for everyone involved and best of all the happy couple gets exactly what they want for their wedding present and their honeymoon. Many other agencies offer some sort of honeymoon program for their clients, some charge and some do not. I personally do not charge.
Dealing with a reputable, local travel agent is always the best option in my opinion. I have heard MANY horror stories from people who use online agencies to save a buck and then cannot get help if they need questions answered or heaven forbid they have a problem before, during or after the trip. You just cannot beat the sound advise you get from a certified travel agent that you can call and/or go see in person at any time. As they say "without a travel agent, you are on your own." When things go wrong is the time most people say or think they should have went with the travel agent.

The Great Smokey Mountain! :yay:
:howdy: We've decided to stay in a cabin near Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge! They have some amazing cabins that cost the same as a hotel room per night. The one we like has a hot tub on a deck overlooking the mountains, a jacuzzi inside, pool table, foosball, air hockey, fireplace, TV, full kitchen, laundry, everything. We're going to go to Dollywood and see some shows, do the tourist thing around the towns, go horseback riding, atv touring. Oh, and there's even a zipline tour!! :yahoo: I can't wait!!

Sounds like a great place for a honeymoon, I hope you have a great time there!
Hubby & I also went on a zipline excursion on our honeymoon. It was a lot of fun, something neither of us had ever done before. I didn't realize that there were zipline tours in the states too, never seen them here, but we'll be googling them now.
