What'll happen to this website if this law, or law like it, passes? Are we just going to one day say "no more cyber bullying because it's illegal" or are you going to ensure the changes are in before that happens, so the site doesn't end up liable for it?
Such a sad story that an 8th grader kills himself over cyber bullying...

Yeah, I guess you could hit the red X but what if you are surfing and read the bullying first?
Plus, even if you hit the red X, the information is still out there for the web world to read and see.
Seems quite a bit of personal information is being posted around here lately and it just made me ponder. Is this a true threat to somd.com?

I don't think anything will happen here. No one here makes a point of chasing down idiots to other sites they may visit and ambush them. If you come here and make an a$$ of yourself, you pay the price. Everyone I have seen bullied here was pretty much an active participant in the back-and-forth among the forumites.
If someone can't stand the heat...they shouldn't pour the gas and light the match.

But I think other sites are being visited...private sites at that. There is a troll that is gathering information and posting it here. If it were my site, I would be concerened.
True, if you can't take the heat, get out of the fire, but the fact remains, personal information, pictures, etc. are being posted. Sometimes you can argue that it comes from a public site, but it it is also coming from websites that are set to private.

I still think the internet is fun. And I think forums are fun. If you find yourself being a target, you have to ask yourself what you did to encourage it. Because not everyone on this forum is bullied. It's pretty easy to avoid the buttheads on here - just don't join Fight Club and go out partying with people you don't know, but who you've seen be jerks to other people. In short, stop trying to suck up to mean people.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am not targeted....yet lol. I don't go to internet parties either and certainly do not suck up to mean people. I know no one on here. I just thought the new proposed legislation was interesting and wondered if it would affect this forum. I do read a lot and notice there is much spewing of personal information. That was my only point. Does that put somd.com at risk should this bill be passed.

No because that doesn't happen on the main board. And if it does, it's taken care of. And if you're in a personal forum where this is going on, you are part of the problem if you get harassed because that is absolutely voluntary and you CHOSE to participate in it.
Most people on here do not get flamed and harassed. The ones that do typically instigated it, then want to go crying about how everyone is soooo mean :bawl: when they started the #### in the first place.

Well, don't worry - it won't. Cyber-bullying is a matter of opinion; if I told you some of the dumb complaints we get, you'd laugh yourself silly. But true cyber-bullying, where the "victim" is neither instigating nor participating, is rare on here and taken care of right away.

And that is why this law was passed, for dumbasses like you. You just assume that everyone that has ever been bullied or disrespected in the cyber world automaticaly derserved it. There are many people in here that are only brave because they are hiding behind a faceless name in here.
I find it so comical that people that have the biggest mouths in here are the ones that are against this. A person should be able to come to a website without having to deal with adults who behave like they are #######s.

I cannot speak for all websites across the internet, but in my 13 years of experience on this one, most of the time when people are "bullied", they either instigated it or egged it on. You don't have to believe that, but it's the truth. There have been any number of times someone will complain about abuse, I will go take care of the problem, only to come back and find that the person has started another thread to keep it going.
Then there are the ones who think "He's back," constitutes flaming and abuse. Not to mention the ones who put their whole personal life on the open board, but if someone refers to it, they get all bent out of shape over being "attacked".
So this stuff isn't cut and dried. In fact, your response above could be construed as "bullying" and "abusive".

You are right, I do not have to believe that, because I don't. I have seen way too many times where newbies come into a site, not just this one and get slammed. This site is one of the worst I have seen and certain people are allowed to do it, while others are not.
I purposely wrote what I did, to see if anyone would pick up on that "tone" of being a bully.

That is not an answer, why should anyone be subjected to any type of bullying? Step away from that one incident for a moment. Why would anyone get their rocks off by coming in here under a fake name just to harrass and try to upset people for fun and get a way with it making it less enjoyable for members that are not in a certain click.

The internet (and forums like this) are a lot like a bar. Say you go to a bar and the crowd there is not the type you like to hang out with. What do you do? Do you stay there and deal with it or do you leave?
Say you go to a bar and there is a crowd there that you hang out with a lot. You get along great with this crew and you have a lot of fun. There is another crowd at this same bar that you don't really know, and another crowd and this same bar that you know of, and don't really care for. What do you do? You may try to mingle with the ones you don't know well, and the ones that you don't really care for but for the most part you hang out with the ones you do know and get along with. Ultimately, what you do is YOUR decision, and if YOU choose to stay in an environment that you are not comfortable with or don't agree with, then that's YOUR decision, but don't complain if things happen that you don't agree with, because you had the opportunity to remove yourself from that situation.

(II) FRIGHTEN, INTIMIDATE, OR CAUSE EMOTIONAL

You are right, I do not have to believe that, because I don't. I have seen way too many times where newbies come into a site, not just this one and get slammed.
Well, you're full of it. Newbies who come on here with a combative attitude or want advice on how to cheat on their spouse are typically met with ridicule. But there have been any number of people who've come on, said hi, been welcomed warmly and had no problems.
You get what you're looking for around here.

I purposely wrote what I did, to see if anyone would pick up on that "tone" of being a bully.

Seriously? I find that disturbing that people who come into a community website such as this, to look for information or talk to others in their local area and cannot do so without the rude and uncalled for behavior that I have seen demonstrated in here.
Why do they not have the right to go into websites without someone thinking they are being "funny" by being rude or harrassing to them.
Why is it the people who are not able to control themselves in a mature and reasonable manner asked not to leave until they can handle themselves better?

I do not think anyone wants to dictate on how to run a website. But I do think they should enforce more when members are incapable of handling themselves without being rude or excessive harrassment of another member, people should be able to come into a website without having to deal with someone who thinks they can get away with anything they want just because it is the internet.

There are TONS of places to find information other than a forum. Like I said, if words on a screen from a stranger affect them to the point they consider legal action, they have more serious mental issues.
Why do the clowns not have a right to be funny, rude or harrassing?
And there are plenty of threads where the OP got the info they requested. Case in point the person asking about moving to Waldorf. She received tons of replies and was not harassed because she didn't act like a clown.

That is a matter of opinion. I've had outraged reports because someone used someone else's initials in a post. Not a nice little "please remove this," but accusing me of allowing their "personal private information" to be posted on the main board. Like I read every single post and know what every single member's real name is. So, you know, I can be on the lookout for initials and such.
Then there was the outrage because Person 1 was romantically involved with Person 2, and I was somehow supposed to know that and start chopping off heads when another poster mentioned it, because apparently it was some huge secret that nobody on the forum was supposed to know about (except me).
THEN there was the outrage because someone had a problem with someone else in real life, and I was supposed to keep them from making any posts either directly or indirectly referencing the complainer.

Mike that is not the point, if someone wanted to come to somd.com they should be able to do so and know they are not going to be subjected to the bullshiat that happens in here. If certain people like to have fun with each other thats fine, but when someone says, enough is enough and express they are not comfortable with the way they are being treated then it is time to back off.
I never said it was all threads or all newbies that experince this at all times. But it does happen. That is not even close to a solution to this, it is a public forum, they have rules that they posted themselves, which they should adhere to. They also have classified ads paid for by companies in the community which hope will be exposed to the people who visit this website, forums included that would lead to future customers.
If this were a closed or private forum that informed the members of activities or stated in the rules and regs something to that effect, that would be diffferent.

I have to agree to a certain extent, but that is not always the case, many people in here do know one another in real life. There have been threads in here where real names were mentioned and real life incidents were brought in.
Bottom line is, if you are ok with the bantering that is one thing, but how hard is it to just back off when someone asks you to, or handle yourself reasonably mature fashion? (not my words those are in the Rules and regs here.)

I am not saying somd is the worst forum ever, there are tons of threads in here that are fun, but I am not even close to being the first to speak out about this in here.
It's not that hard. I had a person on here that used my first name in a thread and I have no idea who they were. Nor do I care. I had several pm's after that saying "OMG, who is that? How do they know your real name?" I didn't know and I didn't care.
If someone is riding you that hard, stop replying to their posts when they are picking on you. It may take a while for them to realize it, but eventually they will realize that they aren't making the impact on you that they were hoping to and they will go away and find someone else to "stalk". We are, for the most part, adults, and should conduct ourselves in that fashion. Unfortunately, some of us do not carry ourselves in that fashion. Learn to pick your battles - some are not worth the effort.

This is personal, isn't it? :lmao:
Not really, it is just another aspect of the topic. I have been concerned over some of the things said in threads I have seen, and have already stated examples.
I was mainly a member of thebaynet, and came over here because when I googled a topic of interest in the area at the time, several of the threads from somd.com popped up. That, and people at work if you mention somd.com they have their opinions about it, good and bad saying the same thing. So, bottom line, no it is not personal just because I do not agree with the majority in here.

I agree, but you also have to factor in, that this is a public forum and if real peoples names are mentioned, or enough information is provided where people can figure out who they are talking about, some of the things said in here anyone can come and read.
I mentioned the lady who jumped off the bridge, the threads in here and some of the posts in here were not only uncalled for but should have not been allowed to remain.
I personaly would not want the job of having to moderate a forum, it would be too exhausting but I can see where some people are comging from and agree with them.

Exactly my point. If I were in public and someone spoke to me the way some people have spoken to others in here I would ask them to leave me alone. If they fail to do so, then I would find security at the event and have them handle it. If the person who is harrassing me was one of the security's friends I would expect them to still handle it.
And would you then go stand next to the person who had harassed you, talk to them, engage them? No. You'd avoid them.
Believe it or not, some people like to spar and don't mind the back and forth. If one person is harassing another person, and that other person is harassing right back, I assume they're enjoying themselves. Otherwise they wouldn't engage.

Why should they have been pulled? This is a public forum and it is based upon the opinions of the posters.
I remember a few years back there was an incident that involved a well loved forumite in here. I'm sure Vrai's first instinct was the pull the thread, but she kinda had to keep it up because it was another one of those incidences that is up for scrutiny by the public.
Just like the sabersaw sex scandal a few weeks back...if that had been a forumite (for all we know it could have been), and this person was a personal friend of Vrai's, should Vrai have pulled the thread to protect her friend? Or kept it up because that's her obligation as the owner of this forum?
Correct me if I'm wrong or misleading, Vrai.

Regardless of whether or not they are written or spoken, they are words. They cannot hurt you. At least that's what the little nursery rhyme says.
And again, if no one knows who "jayboy" is, how is anyone reading going to relate the comments made to you? In 5 years, is what someone you don't even know says on here going to have a profound effect on your life? Honestly, it shouldn't. And if it does and it's in a negative you, you have serious issues.
If someone directly associated with a news event comes on here and reads what is said, then they need to be sure they have their big girl/boy panties on before they start to read, because while to your face, someone may be kissing up to you, but in here, they are gonna speak the truth.

Why "wow"? If someone has no sense of humor and is so socially inept that they cannot decipher an obvious joke, they have no business in a public forum, or around large groups of people in general. The world won't change to suit them, so they're going to either have to adapt or drop out.

Then, you can point to it and say "Look, it says right here that if your arm hurts when you lift it up and you keep lifting it up that I am then going to give you the benefit of the doubt as to why you CHOOSE to keep doing it AND I will take the position that you will stop when you CHOOSE choose to do so. It won't get that far. "Abuse" and "bullying" are so subjective that there's no way Congress can pass a law against it. And if they DO pass the law, say goodbye to not only this forum, but ALL forums and chatrooms and venues for public opinion. Because no matter what the topic or what was said, no matter how vague or benign, someone will insist that they are being bullied. And no company can fight against the constant lawsuits, even if the case is eventually thrown out.

I never said it was all threads or all newbies that experince this at all times. But it does happen. We are all adults in here (for the most part), it should not be asking too much if the person on the other end does not feel comfortable with the way a member is speaking to them to ask them to back off.
Such is life, happens in the grocery store, gas station, mall, etc. Most people learn to roll their eyes and move on. You expect an internet forum to be any different?

She will need a brand new career. That's what I was talking about.
I disagree. The site doesn't need the forums to survive.

Bullshiat if it was not the same person. The three pictures I used other than a generic avatar have been me, with the exception of one with me and by BF.
If I am wrong prove it.

The very first av you had was just of a face of a woman, did not show her body just the face. It was not the same girl in your av now.

If someone can't stand the heat...they shouldn't pour the gas and light the match.
Fascinating...have you even checked my thread history to see if and whom I have EVER bullied here or instigated others to bully.
In light of your stance, you reference to me as a "dumbass" would seem to place you in a position of cyberbullying. You are using your own view and harsh statements toward me to belittle my opinion and minimize my right to have and voice my own opinion. Not once did I affirm my belief that it is correct and proper to be a cyber bully...I only stated the obvious conclusion I have come to participating in this particular forum. Almost without exception everyone here that has gotten burned, brought their own fuel and struck their own match. When the fire starts, it's just like any other fire. I find it interesting to watch from a distance, but I ain't getting close enough to roast my weenie (or anyone elses)!
