I must admit that I used to disparage drivers from New York or New Jersey as the most obnoxious and irresponsible drivers in the U.S.
I was wrong, They in fact are pretty darned good ones. Florida? Naw, they drive fast but are generally pretty courteous
My vote goes to the wonderful drivers of Virginia, who have no idea of the rules of the road, much less how to operate a vehicle safely while breaking every speed limit known.
Lived there and have come to the conclusion that tests cost too much so they hand licenses out at Starbucks with the coffee.
Unbelievable. There should be a drivers ed section dedicated to them.

Bad? Nah. Fast, yes, crazy, yep. But not bad. That's in Mass, of course, where its kind of a state of mutual insanity. Everyone knows it open warfare, take no prisoners:duel:. Driving any other way up there is asking to get abused.
The problems happen when MA drivers leave the state, and dont adjust their style. Like a cage fighter using his skills to get the last sale item in Wal-Mart, its inappropriate:smack:
Worst depends on which kind of driver annoys you most, I think. for me, it FL drivers, who generally seem to be living that Jimmy Buffet "dont give a hoot" lifestyle behind the wheel, never caring about whats around them as they toodle along.

Having lived there for five years, I agree.
In the DC area, the number one reason for rude, dangerous driving is sheer idiocy. Some people are too stupid to live.
In Massachusetts, however, it's hubris. It's utter belligerence. They provoke on purpose. They go the wrong direction down one-way streets not because they're stupid, but because they can get away with it. They'll squeeze past you on roads so close, you'll lose a mirror - and I experienced that, twice. You'll lock bumpers pushing these guys, because if you don't move fast enough, they'll give you a little "tap". They will run lights as though they didn't matter at all. They will zip into a *parking* space to pass you on the right. Seriously. I've never seen such obnoxious driving.
It even once made Time magazine as the worst area in the nation.

the locals here are some of the most foul drivers i've ever been around, and I'm from South Florida. :jameo:
Edit: oh...not counting SOMD. Fair enough. A bunch of FL and NY drivers are good (I guess to make up for the bad ones). But the old people and immigrants are terrible.

rude doesn't mean bad. they just cut you off without a signal because they're used to getting blocked if they put their signal on :lmao:

I used to think NY, but Maryland drivers have them and Va. beat by a long shot. MD drivers will cut you off, tailgate, pull out in front of you, etc. etc. and not think twice about any of it.

Like a prison, you either adapt or die. I rarely ever use those "skills" anymore, although they stood me in good stead in both Saudi and Sicily. In Saudi, you needed the "chicken" skills of being able to bluff the other guy, while in Sicily, it was not being freaked out by folks using that last half inch of space to squeeze in. Every now and again, in DC, I will, just to cut through the idiotsand get the hell moving again.
Beta, NY is kinda like Mass that way, using signals is really considered giving information to the enemy. Who is the enemy? Anyone with a steering wheel in thier hands, of course. Before I consider my chldren fully quailifed drivers, they will spend a week in Boston with me, kinda like "Hell Week" for drivers:)

Va is a hodgepodge of military families from a bunch of other states. So I don't think it is entirely Va's fault, but a mix of that and all the out of state drivers not adjusting their driving when they move.

My vote is for Massachusetts too. Never actually driven in MASS, but had quite a few cab rides and every single one of them scared the crap out of me. And I'm not so much talking about the cab drivers, it was just as much the idiots driving around the cabbies.

There are definitely some bad ones. I just attributed it to being around so many more Md drivers than other state drivers it makes it seem they're worse than it actually is.

I still think Maryland has the worse drivers listed although NJ is really bad also.
I am basing this on the fact that Maryland seems to have alot of accidents with flipped cars which occur on straight road in perfect weather....I still haven't figured that one out???????

That's always puzzled me too. Never saw so many rollovers in my life as here.
Not including Maryland in this poll (and they are the worse driivers all around) is like saying Waldorf is not ghetto lol.
At least Virginia pulls over speeders...in Maryland, you got peeps on Kawasaki Ninjas doing a 120 mph wheely down 301 in hopes of becoming the next pot hole filler.

I'll still abide by the laws, and will not be upset when I see Darwinism take a toll.
I hope they are large enough/and compacted enough to fill the pot hole.

It's a magnetic field created by our being located by several waterways... The Potomac River, The Patuxent River, and the Chesapeake Bay (not to mention the various creeks and other tributaries). Makes cars flip for no apparent reason!! You ever watch a divining rod jump??? :yay:

A lot of you are busting on the "Maryland Locals" as bad drivers but I don't even get how you can tell which ones are the locals through the windshield. Do they have a sign that says "I'm a Maryland local"? There are a lot of people here from a lot of different places now. Years ago there weren't so many accidents and bad drivers as there are now that all of the "out-of-towners" came here.
Go ahead and let me have it because my day can't get any worse. You might just give me a chuckle.

But years ago Rt 235 was mostly a 2 lane road with no traffic lights and everyone made frequent stops at the dozens of little bars that dotted the roadway. That thinned the traffic enough during "rush hour." Plus when folks got back in their cars and pickum up trucks they were drunk enough to know that needed to be more careful behind the wheel.
And where was there really to go back then?

the locals are all used to how the rest of the other mindless people drove. plus there are obviously not as many accidents when you don't have nearly as many people driving on the roads and not nearly as many traffic lights and busy areas.

I was just responding to the people who are saying "Maryland Local Drivers". There is no possible way to tell from a car who is a local and who isn't. Yes there are a lot more accidents now that there are so many people here, but that doesn't mean it's all locals. Unless of course their definition of locals is different than mine. I was just putting out there that a lot of the people here are from different states and there are a lot more people who aren't "locals" and can't drive. They could be from any state and just moved here for a job. You can't tell what state they actually came from if they have a Maryland tag.

I've been to all these places and lived in Florida for 2 years. Hands down worst driver title goes to Floridians. I have NEVER seen so many accidents in my life. In 2007 (I think) Orlando took the #1 Most dangerous place for pedestrians award. In my class alone I knew of 3 people who were hit on their bikes/walking. It's just INSANE. Every morning the radio is stormed with accident reports.:faint:
My two cents :P

in Florida, you are awarded points for hitting pedestrians. When I try to award people points out here, they give me bad excuses like "I want money, not points!" Lame...

i kinda had fun driving there
Lived in Reston, VA for 15 years before NAVAIR moved me here in 1997.
I watched VA drivers steadily devolve after about 1990 after the state DMV made it so easy for our little brothers from "South of the Border" to get VA licenses---
Then, they just started pouring in, and the rest is history.
Plus, it's well known that learning to drive on paved roads in a new country is just plain easier after you've had a few :buddies:

Sorry morningbell, I had to vote for Jersey. Fortunately, there aren't many Jersey drivers around here.
Yes, but the ones that are here are enough for me. I have tons of stories about bad drivers from some of the other states mentioned.
However, the one that is the worst was when I was actually cursed out at a light on Great Mills, with my kids in the car by some woman. I was going a little above the speed limit not much because Willows rd. always had cops. (of course never when you needed them) She was on my a** swerving from lane to lane like she was trying to see in front of me, there were other cars a little further ahead of me. I think she was mad because I turned onto the road before her. (I was turning right so I had the right of way) Anyway, she passed me in a no pass zone, cut me off and slammed on her brakes. When we got to the light she rolled down her window with cell phone and was screaming profanities at me. I was speechless at first I couldn't believe it. I am not one to take crap so I yelled back if you're in such a hurry why don't you get off the phone and step on the d*** gas! (the light was green) I am sure I probably called her a b**** which I'm not proud of since my kids were in the car. That was my way of saying HA HA!
So that is my story, I am convinced all the bad drivers in so. MD are just transplants from NJ, FL, and VA.

All while not using a single turn signal! It drives me CRAZY! If I were to hit someone for cutting in front of me and not having time to react, it would be MY FAULT! I think they know that and just want a new car. You can tell they don't emissions test, some of those cars/trucks should be illegal. Another issue...I know.

I've never really had experience with CA drivers. I think people just assume that if they start to go in the other lane then the person behind them will just know that they are getting over. Also, if they slam on their brakes the other drivers should know they are turning.
Uh...it's a battle that will never be won...

:howdy: I'm from PA and a lot of people I know including me don't drive that slow. As a matter of fact I come from a family of lead foots so we have to remind ourselves to drive a little slower. The person was probably on a frickin cell phone totally oblivious to what was going on. I have to admit, a lot of people from PA have issues merging! Drives me nuts!!!!
