Went today for lunch with a friend. We shared the shrimp and grits and the cheese puffs for appetizer, she had the short ribs chimichurri and I had the Memphis ribs. We also shared a taster of each of their beers.
The shrimp and grits were outstanding - tasty, and the grits had a nice rustic texture. You get a large mound of grits with 4 large shrimp, and it could easily be a light meal.
The cheese puffs were my favorite - I want Carlos to give me the recipe for them because they were fabulous!! It's like a little bun with creamy cheese filling - Gruyere? Not sure, but the bartender told us that it's not really a filling; they make the little dough balls and it bakes into a filled bun. Uh, yum! You get three of them, and you'll wish you had more.
The short ribs were wonderfully tender, so finally somebody knows how to cook them properly. The chimichurri is more of a marinade than a sauce - tart, garlicky, aromatic. It came with some pretty good mashed potatoes and seasoned sauteed veggies.
The Memphis ribs were very good as well. They're dry (as Memphis ribs should be) so don't be looking for BBQ sauce. And frankly, the meat doesn't need it. It's always a good sign when a chef will send his ribs out naked and they can stand on their own without sauce. Very tender and just a hint of smoke - not overpowering. I got them with french fries and a surprisingly good cole slaw. I wasn't sure what a "pineapple" slaw would be like, but it was quite tasty: tart but not mayonnaise-y, with a pinch of sweet fruity flavor, and good crisp veggies.
The portions aren't huge, for which I am grateful because I wanted to try a lot of different stuff and wasn't looking forward to some gargantuan entree. I blew off most of my fries because although they were good, I didn't want to waste tummy room on them.
The beers:
The IPA and pale ale were a little hoppy for my taste, but that's to be expected because they're a hoppy beer anyway. The golden ale was delicious, as was the dobble. I'm not a huge porter fan but the bartender insisted we try it - it wasn't heavy at all and had a nice robust flavor, much better than most porters I've tried.
It wasn't crowded but there were quite a few tables, and I didn't think the noise level was bad at all. Carlos says he's having baffles installed to absorb some of the sound - he saw on here that some of you were complaining about it. And Jay, our bartender/waiter, was awesome with a terrific personality!
So I'd definitely put Ruddy Duck in my restaurant rotation. There's a bunch of stuff I want to try, but it's going to be hard to get me off those cheese puffs. :yum:

Good to know he is willing to listen about the noise level. Food is pretty good. Good review on your part. Can't wait until they really get the brew part down. For my tastes in beer the more hops, flavor etc. the better. Budweiser be damned ! Sorry had to ! Anyway I wish them the best of luck..

Good to know he is willing to listen about the noise level.
It wasn't crowded in there, but there were a good number of tables, and I didn't think the noise level was bad. Seemed normal to me. But with those high ceilings, I can see where it would be an acoustical nightmare when they're packed.
Anyway, there's a fix in the works to correct that.

Here Carlos again!!!
Thanks for your comments and reviews. It’s good to know that we agree with the good things and the not so good ones.
First I would like to let you know that now, today, we have SIX of our beers on tap: New Golden Ale, New Belgium Wit (wheat), Pale Ale, Belgium Dubbel, IPA and Porter. What can I say about our own beers... It really surpassed my expectations. Please try the new wheat. If you don't like it it's not you beer style but if you do it's sooooo goood!!!!
The Chipas are now our best appetizer after the chicken wings, and we dropped the price!!!
Thanks to Marlin and his crew that have perfected the art of making the best cheese balls in the northern hemisphere, I'm not kidding.
About the sound issue, yes it's a problem...
"But every problem has a solution", says Michael Kelley my partner and very knowledgeable restaurateur.
We have contacted and signed a contract with: Acoustical Solutions Soundproofing & Noise Control Products
They are guaranteeing the install and sound improvements.
They will start working in three to four weeks from now. They will be installing 1,400 sf. of hanging baffles and sound absorbing panels.
If this doesn't do it then we will double it!!! until we are all pleased with it.
See you very soon!!!!
All Ruddy!!!!

Went last night, had a really good time and were impressed. The service was very good; Stephen was attentive, funny, bright, knew what he was doing and took good care of us. The menu selection was above average and beer selection super. Carlos came over and visited with us and explained all different beers and after my sampler of 6 I finally settled on the Dubbel which was very good.
We had the cheese puffs for an appetizer and they had a really good flavor, but a little dry for my taste. I would have liked some sort of dip with them, but hey...it's a dish from Carlos' home and that is how they eat it so we went with the flow. I had the fish and chips with the fish being excellent, but the fries were a bit old/stale...probably becasue we were there early and got the end of an old batch instead of some of a fresh batch. They would have gladly brought us more if we had asked so this was not an issue at all. My wife had a burger and said that it was good as well.
As I said, we got there early (5:15ish) and by 6 there was a steady flow of folks coming in. It was great to see Carlos out and about, taking the time to meet his customers.
We'll be back. :yay:

The pizza looks great but I just wasn't in the mood for pizza. Much of the menu just doesn't appeal to me. Regardless, I will be back for the Beer, wings, and will try a different dish :howdy:
Whenever I am in Annapolis I frequent Rams Head Tavern for their Beer Battered Fish Tacos (west coast style), Crab Mac & Cheese or the Ahi Tuna Dinner.
Gordon Biersch in Annapolis is another place I like for their beer and menu. I like their Meat loaf, Fire Roasted Chicken & Fettucine, and Pecan Crusted Chicken, and the Blackened Mahi Mahi.
Just some of the food that appeals to me. I also wish more local places had the option for a Turkey Burger.

We went last Friday. I liked the beer, but the food was a bit of a let down. The pizza was underdone, oversauced and had way too much cheese for my liking. I was really hoping that they could do a nice blistered thin crust with that fancy oven. I realize not everyone likes their pizza the way I do, but I really hate when the cheese and sauce overwhelm the crust to the point it becomes soggy. My husband thought his pork chops were ok, but wouldn't order them again. They were a overdone and he didn't care for the mushroom gravy all over them. I'm sure we'll be back for the beer, but if we eat, we'll try other items.

I've sampled or ordered over half of their pizza menu (even more when you count what friends got) and not only have I not heard a complaint, but everyone LOVED the pizza. It's fantastic. You either have poor taste in pizza or had the worst luck possible with your pizza. It's not papa johns, dominos, or pizza hut, but that pizza is all crap anyway. Well, I live in Alexandria, and there are 2 better pizza places within a mile of my house - Rustico and Cafe Pizzaiolo. In fact, my husband makes better pizza at home on the grill. If I wanted soggy overcheesed pizza, I would order papa johns. Maybe it was an off night. I didn't comment about the quality of the cheese btw, just the quantity. Too much. I peeled it off and left big lumps of it congealed on the plate.

Hi Michael and ohstate
I understand where you are both coming from and we apreciate your feed back.
I love Rams Head and Gordon Biersch, their beers and food. Rustico and Cafe Pizzaiolo are amaizing places for pizzas and beer.
We do have a long way to go to be like them, but we are working on it and we will get there very soon. We want to be as good or better than them. Down here is very difficult to atract the best help when our sales are just a fraction of theirs.
Yesterday we brewed our first belgium Golden Tripple, it will be ready in about 16 days.

So, I'm not trying to sift through 7 pages.
Where is this place located?
glhs837
07-20-2009, 06:54 AM
Solomons, just north of the Rescue Squad, northbound side, it shares a parking lot with the new Hilton Garden Inn. Heres a link to Bing Maps of it.
Your web browser and the Maps site are incompatible (http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=38.350731~-76.45655&style=h&lvl=18&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1)
I'll say, I'm not impressed with Bing as a search engine, but its maps (satellite shots) are almost always more up to date, and allow closer zoom, than Google Maps.

If the noise inside bothers you, you can always sit outside at the patio tables, very nice. The place gets two thumbs up in my estimate, for both the beer and food!

Ate there tonight for the third time. Love the nachos and the pizza is good but it does have a lot of cheese on it. I tried the shrimp and grits tonight and I am not sure what to think of it. It was ok but I wouldnt get it again and I love grits. I like the place and I will keep going. The service tonight was the best yet.

Had the Jamacian Jerk Pizza, bit of a let down. I was expecting a little spice on it, but it was pretty bland. The noise level rivials a Redskins game though. Pretty loud, other than that the beer was good and the calamari and mussels were good too.

We just came from the Ruddy Duck. Good food, nice beer, and a great waitress = a very enjoyable evening.
We started out with the cheese ball thingies, and they were awesome. Bob ordered the Memphis ribs, I ordered the Braised Short Ribs with chimichurri sauce, abd Bubba had the kids' pepperoni pizza. Bob loved hte ribs, and Bubba gobbled the pizza. I really liked the short ribs, bu did not care for the chimichurri sauce. Having said that, the waitress and Carlos himself did a great job in trying to find an alternative sauce that I would like. The teriyaki sauce was a better choice for me than the accompanying chimichurri one. I really appreciated that they took the time to make sure that I left a happy customer.
We'll be going back for sure. :yay:

I went tonight also for the first time. Excellent beer and food! Loved the decor and didn't find it to be deafening with noise as some have mentioned, but it also wasn't anywhere near capacity!
Both of the restaurant owners - Carlos and Michael - were very nice and accommodating! It is refreshing to see a bar/restaurant option down here that isn't a national chain and has a lot of character, flair and good staff! They will do very well, especially when it gets colder and ppl start wandering away from the waterfront places.

Hi,
Unfortunately the baffles are not up yet... The company is saying another two weeks...
Just to let you know we now have our Belgium Triple on Tap, it's delicious!!! 7.9% alc. vol.
We are out of the Dubbel but we have brewed a new batch that should be ready in a couple of weeks.
We are also now fermenting our first Imperial Stout!!! It will be about 9% alc. but it will take a month or so to age it, plus we are also dry hoping it...
Monday we'll be starting our first Lager (Helles) and Tuesday a Martzen for October Fest and next our Barley wine that should be ready for when it gets colder.
I'll let you know when the baffles are up. But don't forget that we also have our private dinning room that it's a lot quieter...
See you soon!!!

It wasn't crowded in there, but there were a good number of tables, and I didn't think the noise level was bad. Seemed normal to me. But with those high ceilings, I can see where it would be an acoustical nightmare when they're packed.
Anyway, there's a fix in the works to correct that.
your right, the food is great, the beers are very good. the sevice was kind of slow but i think the waiter was new, didn't seem very confident, no problem we all have things to learn. the noise level was a little loud, the bar is right there in with the dining area, the ceilings are high so the noise gets trapped. i wouldn't advise it for a large group of people of a first date for dinner anyway, we were there on a saturday night. highly recommended.

This was a great review. You should review more places so I don't make the mistake of ending up at Burt's Diner again thinking they serve breakfast. Where I'm from diner means open 24 hours and breakfast all day. We had at least 6 good ones just in our county. I miss home.
We went to the Ruddy a couple months ago when our family was visiting from out of town. My husband and dad did order memphis ribs forgetting they are dry. They still liked the flavor and the meat fell off the bone. Since it was a Saturday evening it was busy and noisy but that is to be expected due to the ceilings. We loved the atmosphere though and the staff are all friendly and seem to know what they are doing too. The steak and mashed potatoes were fantastic. My parents, who are huge seafood fans, weren't impressed with the crab dip. Although they did like the crab cakes. I LOVED the homemade chip nachos.

Stopped there yesterday. Sat at the bar and tried 2 different beers. The place was filling up as I was leaving. I got 2 pizzas to go and thought they were both kind of small; but they were good.
There was plenty of waiters and waitresses and I was impressed overall. The 2 bar tenders were pleasant and efficient. There seemed to be plenty of *regulars* at the bar.
I do look forward to having a sit down dinner with my husband there soon....

I tried the cheese puffs last week because everyone was raving about them. They didn't do anything for me. However, one of them must have gotten a bit of oil or something from another dish on it and it changed the flavor considerably. I liked that one puff much better than the others.

Hi!!!
Carlos here.
I do not want to use this forum as a marketing tool but we have some very good news that I want to share with you.
A week ago we entered a beer competition for our first time.
It is the Governor's Cup beer tournament it's done every year by the "Maryland's Brewery Association"
15 Maryland breweries entered the competition...
I went up to Baltimore on Saturday to find out the result.
We entered with 6 beers: Oktoberfest, Helles, IPA, Belgium Trippel, Belgium Dubbel and Imperial Stout.
We won God medal for our Oktoberfest (Marzen style beer), best German style Marzen in Maryland, can you believe that?
We also got Silver Medal for our IPA, nobody got Gold medal in this category this year.
Our Belgian Trippel got Silver medal too!!!
We also got bronze medals for our Imperial Stout, Helles Lager and Belgian Dubbel.
So we are very excited to offer you the best beers in the State right here at home. It's our dream come true!!!!
All this was possible thanks to our Brewer “Maestro” Jonathan Reeves, he is awesome!!!
And next week we will start making empanadas, beef and veggies.
See you soon.

Hi will be offering 10 and 20 lts kegs (2.5 to 5 gallons) with german couplings that we haven't gotten yet...
They are insulated kegs that can hold cold beer for up to 12 hs, unless you keep it in a refrigerator.

Probably one of the most pleasant servers I've had in years.
I went last week. The food was great, but the service really stunk. They didn't have very many beers to choose from. Out of all the beer offered on the menu, they only had about 6 of them.
Our waitress wasn't very good. She didn't come around enough. We were there for a birthday celebration and wanted to get crazy, but didn't have the opportunity. Having 1 beer after our food got there and didn't get to order another because she didn't come back by....

Oh well, you'll know better than to go anywhere with BF now, won't ya?

My one complaint about Ruddy Duck is that their beers seem to have too high of an alcohol content. Two beers makes my head spin, even if I've been sitting there for awhile eating.

I haven't had that experience. Every time I've gone, our server was all over it.

Yeah.. it was bad... 2 personal pizzas and 2 pastas should NOT take 45 minutes to get out to you.
The place wasnt packed either.. I can understand if the place is somewhat packed or busy, but that wasnt even the case...

Cant be the kitchen, people arrived after us, and got there food at least 20 minutes and they got pizzas too....
to me, at least have your server tell you that the food is going to take some time... instead of waiting there....

How many times, chess, you need more than one data point to make a general statement. "the one time I went, the service was terrible". We've been about 3 times, not counting my refill trips, and its been great twice, acceptable once.

Yeah, if you decide to never go back to a restaurant based on one time you've had bad service, you will quickly run out of restaurants to patronize.

And to top things off, every time I read a post about poor service my head screams, "HASHI!" Make it stop...:bawl:

same experience I had. Next time we will only go to the bar for pizza and wings. It's a shame because it is a nice place. Some of the waitresses need to learn not to lie about how much longer the food will be.

And you know, that's the thing. People forget, have a brain fart, whatever. But don't lie about it. Simply say you forgot, then run and get it. Your customers aren't stupid and they know you're lying, then you look like a lying liar who lies.
Just like how "the keg just ran out and they're replacing it." Bull####. You forgot my beer and you're lying. Just say you forgot the beer, then go get the damn thing.

That sort of thing is a major turnoff to customers and in turn does hurt business. The wait staff there needs to get their stuff together. That place could be great, but for now, it needs work. Yes, it is a new place, but they need to learn a few things.

I'm not that critical of a person, but they need to get that place in order quickly and hand out attitude adjustments to some of them.

Hey Everybody,
Points taken about the service. But please next time you have a bad experience let us KNOW. Michael, Nichole or myself are always on duty.
Last weekend we had a server, very stressed with college, that forgot to put the order in for more than 30minutes. She is no longer with us.
And as you say, always tell the truth!!!
On the alcohol issue with the beers, yes we do have some beers with high alcohol content but the wheat and Lagers are not higher than a Bud, but we serve those in 16 oz glasses.
We are constantly making new beers so unfortunately we run out of them and we are also testing which beers we should have available all the time like the IPA for example. The Oktoberfest took 8 weeks to make and 260 gallons sold in less than two weeks. We will be brewing a new batch soon but it will take a while. It was very difficult to get kegs of good Pumpkin Ale. I ordered 6 kegs three month ago and ended up with only two, two different distributors same excuses, unbelievable!
Thanks again for your comments!!!

Carlos, whenever we had an issue with the service there either you or the waitress made up for it with a round of beers. Love the food and the beer. We will be back. Got to try all the little beers for a taste test next time. No more Oktoberfest? Didn't even get a taste of that one.
