A friend of ours has a cat thats been hanging on his front steps for a couple of days now. Unfortunately he's allergic and can't keep or even touch it. I went and saw the cat today and realized it needs some help. Not sure if it's a male or female (I forgot to check that) but the gums are white, it's full of scabs and is kind of wobbly when it walks. It's also been declawed and may be a year old, if that.
We're not set up to take any cats but are more then willing to transport and at least give a food donation to anybody who might be willing to help.

AWWW. This poor kitty looks like he needs some love and someone to care for him. I hope someone can help him out. If anyone is willing to take him in, I will help out with food, treats, toys and kitty litter/box.

if you can pm me the street address and the phone number of the neighbor where the kitty is, I'll go and pick it up. I can't bring it to my house. I already have a houseful plus one foster. I'll have to take it to Charles County Humane Society. Will that be ok?

Yes it would be so much better to let the kitty die on the streets with no medical treatment  Why don't you offer up the help if you do not like how it is being handled. :imjustsaying:

Sadly, there are just too many cats/kittens needing help right now. I've been feeding bottle babies since March. I have two now that are about 4 weeks old in addition to my own 4 cats. I cannot risk taking in a sick cat when I've worked so hard to get these babies to survive.
It could be the cat has leukemia or it could be she has fleas so bad that she is anemic. At any rate, euthanasia, while I hate the word, is a much kinder fate for the cat than suffering and dying or falling prey to a dog or fox, etc.
It's reality.

We've had an email chain going since last night. Most of the rescues are up to their eyeball in healthy cats and kittens and just don't have the resouces to help a sick cat other than get it off the street.

yes, yes, I read the story. All the rescue groups and shelters are very overcrowded this time of year. The rescue groups are having to turn away healthy cats and dogs.
Taking this kitty to a shelter is the only solution I can offer. If they prefer the kitty not go to the shelter, that is ok too, but somebody has to step forward and take the kitty to a vet to determine his illness.

That's really sad. They have cats like one that gurl had adopted, that is not a good pet and doesn't want to be touched, but can't make room for a love starved, declawed kitty. Sad. Just sad.
They really need to get their priorities straight.

Can we at least get this cat a visit to the vet to make sure that he or she has a chance? A couple tests and a good check-up is affordable. There's always the possibility the cat's not sick at all. I did this once with a cat I found in Westbury. She has a wonderful home now with RR.
So what was the location? I can hit up some friends on Facebook, see if a pet-free home can foster her before we can get her in for a checkup, and a little while after. It would be easier to get the rescue groups involved at that point.

I'm getting the impression that no one has done anything yet. The problem is, it needs to go to a home with no cats, in case it has something contagious. Otherwise, I'd grab it up.

I cannot comment on what the rescue does that you got your cat from, but the rescues I'm associated with are VERY upfront about each and every animal we have available. We don't want our animals to fail in their new home so it is not advantageous to "lie" about our animals.
Cats can be strange animals..you aren't always sure how they will react to other cats or situations in a new environment.
Like I've always said, don't knock a rescue until you've tried it.

Just went back and realized you said that, thanks... I usually use All Kinds in Callaway, but I don't drive.
I'd be happy to pay for the check up, but first we need a temporary place to keep the cat in case she has anything contagious. We could get a scan done there, and then maybe someone will find their (by the looks of it long lost) pet. Hopefully. If not, a clean bill of health will help get him/her into a rescue system. Otherwise, I can't say it wouldn't have been worth the effort. Looks like a sweetheart that could use some attention in any form.

I agree, it should go somewhere without other cats too, not just for disease but also I'd think in case there's a turf war or something with existing cats. I think being declawed puts it at a disadvatage of defendings itself in case the others didn't get along with it. I considered volunteering but it would need to be indoor and outdoor cat and I'm worried about it defendings itself from the others if it needed to.

I called Last Chance Animal Rescue. She can offer lower costs on standard tests like felv/fiv, etc. Her charge for an office visit is $10. What we need now is someone to house the kitty until we determine its illness. And...if the cat tests pos for fel leuk or anything else serious, what then?
It's very probable that the cat is just infested with ticks, fleas and worms. We need to be prepared if it tests pos for something more serious tho.

Awesome on the $10 visit and low cost tests. Where is this located, and what are their hours?
If the cat tests positive for something, we're already looking for a home with no cats. If it tests positive for something really bad, I guess the cat got the attention it very much needed in the last moments of his or her life... :ohwell:

We can foster the kitty until it is healthy enough to get adopted. I have a spare bedroom that the kitty can stay in so that it will be away from the other animals. If anyone has an extra litter box or anything that I can use please let me know. I don't work so I can drive and get things. I just have enough kitty stuff for the one cat that i have. Well Chasey's got the litter box, I've got lots of food that I need to donate, wanna get the litter, treats, and toys? I might see something at the store and grab it on impulse anyways, but you can never have enough treats and toys :)
EDIT: what's a good central area? I'm in Southern St. Mary's. Was thinking just on one side or the other of the bridge, maybe Petco or Pepper's. Could meet up there and pass along the supplies.

I've got the kitty condo up and ready to go. just tell me when and where. I'm in Huntingtown. I know where Pepper's is and I know where the Petco is in California just over the bridge. This is just awesome. I don't have money to contribute but I'm happy to provide the condo if you need it. I can bring an extra litter box if necessary.
Depending on the conditiion of the kitty, be sure to keep the kitty isolated from your other pets, and WASH your hands and arms after each handling.
And have we decided what to do if the kitty tests pos to felv/fiv?

The trade just took place. Kitty is pretty scruffy. He definately needs some attention and TLC. He was hungry! I sent Dos Gattos home w/ litter box, litter, food, treats and a toy. Wharf Rat also had some stuff for him.
He was definately someone's pet at one time. You can see where he used to wear a collar. Looks like he's been kicked around some...

I think that should be up to the foster more than any of us now... there is no rescue organization involved yet, just us. If any tests come back positive, best thing to do might be to just put the little guy to sleep, depending on the severity of whatever it may be. If Curb Kitty tests positive for something mild, maybe we can work towards finding a pet-free home or foster. Robin posted earlier offering her home to the kitty.
We can really only hope for the best, but by looking at the pictures this kitty looks undernourished on top of the pale gums. For all we know this little guy may need immediate IV fluids.
I'm making myself worry. :(

Very good point. Hopefully kitty will test negative. Towel under the door in the meantime I suppose...

Also, just gave myself some peace of mind... called All Kinds for what kind of price range to expect if kitty needs IV fluids:
Exam cost: $46
+ $20 or so for fluids. Much more affordable than I expected. If the bill goes a little over the supplied funds, let me know so I can help out. If the estimate you guys get is more than that, the number to All Kinds is 301 994 9919.

Actually, it was so scarred up we really couldn't tell. Dos and I were thinking fixed male. Also, yesterday I thought for sure it was very young, but after seeing it a little more today I'm not sure of that right now either. It's in pretty bad shape. At the very least flea dermatitis has done some damage. Regardless, it's off the street for now. A great big thanks to DosGattos. Hopefully a vet visit will bring some good news. If it is felv/fiv positive, I feel Dos will do what ever is best for the cat and I for one would not question her decision (what ever that may be). If it's a worse case senario, at least the end for this critter can be peaceful. For now all we can do is stay positive.
Thanks again DosGattos. Hopefully this will all end on a great note!!

I just got back from the vet's office. We took her over to All Kinds. She came back negative on the combo test!! YAY!! She has a slight heart murmur and is/was infested with fleas and ticks. They gave her capstar for the fleas and frontline. We have to wait a few days and watch her scratching. If she isn't excessively scratching she can be put on antibiotics. After that she can get her vaccines. She might 4 years old or even 10. We don't know for sure but she does need a name. Any suggestions??

I've been wracking my brain trying to remember where I'd seen this poem and couldn't remember to save my life! Duhhhh....it was right here on the forum. It seems fitting for this thread...... :)
I would've died that day
if not for you.
I would've given up on life
if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear
if not for your gentle hands.
I would have left this life
believing that all humans don't care.
Believing there is no such thing
as fur that isn't matted;
Skin that isn't flea bitten;
Good food -and enough of it;
Beds to sleep on,
Someone to love me-
To show me I deserve love
just because I exist.
Your kind eyes, your loving smile,
your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me…
You saved me from
the TERROR of the pound,
Soothing away
the memories of my old life.
You have taught me
what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same
for other dogs and cats like me.
I have heard you
ask yourself in times of despair
Why you do it.
When there is no more money,
no more room, no more homes.
You open your heart a little bigger,
stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room
to save one more like me.
I tell you with the gratitude
and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how,
Reminding you why you go on trying.
I am the reason
The dogs and cats before me are the reason
As are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted, our love never given
We would die if not for you.

The steroids should help with the itching and the antibiotics should clear up the infection. Hopefully, her hair will grow back soft and fluffy. She has become quite a feisty kitty!! She is very playful and quite loving. I can't wait to see how much more her personality develops. She is going to make someone a wonderful pet.

Hopefull, my hairless wonder of a cat Ragnar won't be a jerk to her. If he is he can stay in his room and she can be free to explore.
Do you need to change your name to TresGattos?

Miss Gertie is doing wonderfully!! She has a vet appointment next week for her follow up and to get vaccinated. She is quite the diva, as soon as we get out of bed in the morning rest assured she is ready to take our spots in bed and keep it warm for us!! She met our hairless wonder the other day. He wasn't too happy about it he was hissing and growling up a storm. She didn't even bat an eye at him and definately couldn't be bothered to get off of our bed to check him out!! She is an absolute doll and will make someone a great pet!!

 Glad to hear she made a full recovery! I wish I could take her, but I set a limit of 2 kitties and we're there right now. Besides, they are both older women and set in their ways! Do you have a recent pic of Gertie?

I sure wish I could take her but I'm full up also. If we continue to publicize here I'll bet someone will know someone who is looking for a new family member. :)

Post some new pics and I'll send them to my sister. Her cat died last week and she is looking for a new one. She said she wanted one about a year old but you never know. Have the vets been able to narrow down Gertrude's age any? From the early pics, it looks like she has been declawed only in front. True?

She is front declawed, spayed, up to date on vaccines. The vet guessed her at about four maybe younger. I'll get some pics posted ASAP.

This girl is just over a year. I got her last August and her age was about 5 weeks then. She is with Second Hope Rescue and looking for her forever home.
