I just noticed that that only the agitator in my washing machine spins not the drum during the spin cycle. Any recommendations? Tips or tricks I (or hubby) could try before contacting someone to fix it? It's not that old, maybe 2 or 3 yrs but I'm pretty sure there's no warranty on it anymore. TIA.

take off the back panel to the control area and see if a wire came unplugged. there should be a wiring diagram in that area or on the panel.

normally its just a couple of screws

There isn't much you can do. Check the drive belt for wear/tension. Other than that, it could possibly be either the timer switch which controls the different functions, or the clutch. Timer switch you can replace yourself, the clutch is a bit tougher.

Check the lid switch.

If that wasn't working wouldn't that keep my washer from working at all? I know if I leave the lid up, once the washer is done filling up it does not go to the next setting. You have to close the lid for it to begin washing.

Sounds like a belt or timer issue. My bet is belt is off or broken.

My washer went throught the same thing and we had someone come out and look at it for 70.00 and they told us it would be 700.00 to fix it. I said no thank you and went and bought a new one for less. Mine was not old either.

Somehow I think that's what going to happen. My MIL washer is ancient. I can't ever remember her having to have someone come look at it. I'm wondering if it would just be better to buy a used one. I mean if they're only going to last a few years what's the point in spending several hundred for a new one? Oh well. hubby is gonna look at it after work. Please, please, please be something he can fix, lol.

Thanks for the suggestions. My husband was supposed to look at it before he left on travel today. Did he do it? NOoooo, he forgot. So I guess I will try to look myself this week after work. Damn him :tantrum

It's more then likely a belt. Over the 15 yrs I've been with the same washer the belt broke twice. It happens.

If I had way over there, I would take a look at it. Is it full of water still? If so empty it the best you can and then lean it against the wall and look underneath. The belt may have fallen off.

As far as I know, the water drains just the clothes are left wet. See I don't get it. How can people, like my MIL, have a washer for like forever and I (or others) but a new one and it goes to sh*t in just a couple years? I don't buy cheap ones either but not ones that cost $700 or anything. I'm just venting, sorry. Hopefully it is the belt. So I'd have to look underneath the washer, not behind it?

Whatever is easier for you. You should be able to see from the back once the cover is off.

Starting to sound like it might be easier to roll it down a hill and let it spin that way. When you're done, get a new one.

"oh look dear... I have no idea how it got all banged up like that...."

I'm selling my washer and dryer for a steal since I sold the house.

Also a mower if anyone wants one cheap.

ok looked underneath, belt is still attached. couldn't get to the back to check for anything. the back didn't have screws. they were flat and octogon in shape. tried pliers but I don't think they unscrew.

The bottom looks fine. Should be another one inside the back panel. Use an open end wrench or socket.

Ok, I will look for one at work or ask hubby if he has one here. He thinks I should wait for him to get back from travel. But sometimes I'm just to impatient, lol.

Nice picture of a hex head screw! You need a nut driver (picture)of the correct size, a socket or the ever useful vise grips. It sound to me like you have either a transmission problem or a timer/cycle problem. Either one is over $100 and best left to hubby. If the agitator spins fast when on the spin cycle then it's probably the transmission.

Thanks. I'll have to check the speed of the agitator when I get home.

I have a service call into the repair guy. He'll be out Friday to take a look. Unscrewing those nuts in the back does not take the cover off. Hubby left well enough alone, didn't want to break anything.
