View Full Version : Gonna try to catch a stray

There is a beautiful white stray longhair that we see all the time. This morning I saw it in the driveway along with it's itty bitty fuzzball of a white kitten. I am going to see about borrowing a livekeeper trap from my F.I.L. to catch her. If I manage to catch her, I would be looking to get her fixed and then either place her (1st choice) or release her (depending on how wild she is). My keeping her is probably not an option due to 2 adult cats already that probably won't accept her.
I also plan to catch the kitten and try to tame it and then have 3 cats.
My questions:
How long can they stay in the live keeper, if I get them shade and food/water (as in if I catch them in the middle of the night can they stay till the next day)?
Who does low cost fixing of female cats?
Anybody have a large cat size pet carrier I can use to take her to the vet?

Chances are you won't catch both at the same time. They'll be fine until the next morning as long as you have food/water.
There are several options for spaying/neutering. Charles County Humane Society would probably be a good option for you...they also do some vetting/shots, etc. Let me know if/when you catch her and I'll check out some options for you.

I don't expect to catch both at the same time. That's be a neat trick though. It would make it hard to transfer them to a carrier. Maybe I'll see if I can find a big cardboard box (like for a washing machine) so that if I catch them, I can move them to the box in the basement until I can get them to the vet (<24 hours)

Are you sure they're really feral and not just scared/timid? Be very careful and use gloves..you don't want to get bit and then have it/them run off. Tri County Shelter will loan you a trap. I have a condo you can use. It's about the size of a large dog crate, but two-story.

We've seen the mother for about 12-18 months in our backyard. Thus the belief she is a stray.
Father in Law has a live keeper trap that I am going to see about borrowing. If he's done ridding his garden of groundhogs I will hopefully pick it up tonight.

Me? NO! I was quite content to let the white one run wild until I saw that it was reproducing.
Will be picking up the trap from my F.I.L. tonight.
There are actually 3 cats I am going to try to catch. the 2 white ones and a black one I see occaisonally.

Tri county is quick and efficient with cheap spaying and shots. A friend of mine paid $50 to have a kitten that she caught spayed, leukemia tested, a a Rabies shot, ans micro-chipped.

1. Cats can do well in a good sized trap for a few days.(2-3)
Elevate the trap off the ground on bricks, etc so that the cats waste will go thru the wire onto the ground so that the cat does not have to sit/lie in it.
Cover the trap to keep cat dry and offer some "hiding" space.
2. There are a good number of low cost options here in SOMD.
You can ask the folks at the SPOT ( thrift shop in St. Leonard) for a "spay/neuter grant" so that they pay 100% of vetting.
3. I have MANY cat carriers, I would be more than happy to give you what you need to keep!
(Folks who bring in injured/orphaned animals often times do not want thier carrier back, all are power washed and clean).
I also have a nice trap forks...a device that slides down into the trap acting as a divider so you can open the trap and cat can not escape.
Let me know!
I can drop off at Peppers for you to pick up if needed as I am not sure where you live.
And KUDOS for helping these cats.:howdy:

Not at the same time but it will work I caught mom first. put her in a cat carrier and re-set the trap with a can of wet food and set it far back in the trap but up against the door to mom. all 3 babies ran in together. and trapped.

Well, the live trap was set up about 9pm and huntr checked it before going to bed.....
2 for the price of 1. My uneducated self estimates that these 2 are about 12 weeks, or maybe even a little older. Huntr disagrees, thinking 8-9 weeks, but I'm pretty sure they are larger than the last stray we adopted at 12 weeks old.
Oh and that advice someone gave about wearing gloves....huntr is wishing he'd taken you up on it. He has a pair of puncture wounds on his thumb. And he was too busy avoiding the claws to flip them over and check to see if they are male or female.

Trap is currently set between 2 large coolers right behind the house. Kittens have been removed to our little cat carrier and it is sitting in our bathroom with food & water. Have a big box in the basement Dymphna can empty and move them to if we catch any more (especially if we catch an adult or non-relative as I would want to segregate them from other cats).

And KUDOS for helping these cats.:howdy: TY. With the adults, I was fine with letting them run. Only 2 or 3 that we regularly see. But having kittens squished on the road in front of the house (happend a couple of times in the last few years) is not something I want to deal with any more. Also don't want 50 million wild cats running around. I like song birds/squirrels/bunnies.

Hard to tell..they do look a tad older. Funky eyes...see if you can get some terramycin for their eyes and keep them FAR away from your own cats. They probably have fleas. You can get Capstar which is a one-time pill that will kill all fleas on the cat w/i 24 hours. Then you can does them with something like Advantage. I'm not sure what you're able to do for them...cost is always an issue...I'm well aware of that. Probably have worms too.
If you need help, let me know. I may be able to get you some help with meds, etc. Can't promise but if you are will to foster them, rescue groups may be will to help with care.
Thanks for helping these guys. :yay:

Kittens can be fostered. Adults are probably not a foster option due to our adult cats. Have to catch them first either way.
We have a line on 1 possible placement for a kitten (not a forumite) and then LT may want one.

1 cat has mucus marks under the eyes. Other 2 are clear. All are trapped in our bathroom with the door closed until after getting vetted.

After preparing the bathroom for cat habitation, I released the kittens from the carrier. There are 2 males and one female. All white except that one of the males has a black spot that looks like someone took a soot covered finger and wiped it down the middle of the top of his head.....He got a bath because 1. he was the dirtiest of the 3 and 2, I wanted to make sure the spot wasn't actually soot. I'll eventually wash them all, but I figure let them calm down for a while.
One of them is particularly athletic. While removing them from the carrier, it tipped over with one kitten still inside. The others were scared by the commotion and one of them leaped into the tub, then onto my back, where I was bent over trying to right the carrier, then she climbed the towels to the top of the rack, which is about 5-1/2 feet off of the floor. She leaped in and out of our deeper than average tub a couple of times in her attempt to flee.
My daughter says that was the girl kitten. I'm inclined to believe her because when she found out that one was a girl, she asked to keep her, so girly was probably watching her closer than the other one.

I don't doubt that that was a female. That's the one that bit me. She was jumping all over in the trap and carrier last night until I got the 2nd in there. We all know women are crazy. Or is it people? Either way, beer is good.

OK. I did not catch any last night. Turns out the can of wet cat food I used as bait got wedged under the trap release. Cat was able to clean the can without tripping the trap.
Moved the can out of the way today. Rebaited with some Popeye's chicken skin. Caught the black long hair kitten/cat. It's not yet full grown, but not as small as a 12 week old kitten. I'd say 1/3-1/2 grown. VERY active running back and forth in the trap. Nice heavy work glove on hand.
Unfortunately, in my attempt to move it to a carrier, it got away. Will try again when/if I catch it. As of now, my plan is to borrow a much larger carrier from my in-laws, put the carrier on end, open the door, insert the trap into the carrier, open the bottom end of the trap and dump the cat in the carrier, remove trap and slam carrier door shut in the face of the cat as it tries to jump out.
Any better ideas? Anybody have some tranq darts I can use?

The larger dog carriers do good the door opening is big enough to slip the have a heart trap into the opening. We have used that many time with success.

We have 2 adult cats that have been a part of our family for 14 and 5 years.
The 14 year old cat is evil. She hates children and kittens. She always has. Last night, I was on the couch holding a kitten and evil cat jumped into my lap, did a double take and removed herself from the offending presence of the kitten.
Well, tonight Huntr decided to introduce a kitten to the 5 year old cat. He's a sweet cat. Tolerates much abuse from small children and the evil cat. He was peacefully asleep under the coffee table when Huntr leaned over and showed him the kitten. He began to growl and continued this evil growl for a full 10 minutes. Even after Huntr traded the first kitten for a second one, I heard a periodic growl coming from under the coffee table. Oddly enough, this cat, was also a stray we picked up in our yard (the older one came from the pound in Baltimore Co.) so, he is probably an older sibling or perhaps an uncle to the new kittens.

There are tons of informational websites out there on taming wild/feral kitties.
When I brought my feral in, she was guesstimated to be about 10-12 weeks old. I had the vet check her out but due to her poor health, she wasn't recommended to be spayed right away. She had a horrible discharge from her eyes that I noticed the kitties you have in custody have (or at least it looks like they have from the pictures).... That can be either an upper respiratory infection or distemper so you want to have them checked over before handling them and/or having them around any of your pets. Some say they have had ferals/wild cats adjust to home life very well and rather quickly. I wasn't that lucky but after several months, she adjusted rather well. She just started to do a 1/2 meow last year and that was the first time I ever heard sound out of her after having her for 2 years.
I've used Lucky Ones a couple of times in the past and I paid next to nothing for shots and fixing.... I want to say $60-$70 and that is way cheaper than the vets offices around here.
Good luck in finding them homes.... feral/wild cats do and can make wonderful pets. I wouldn't trade mine in for nothing!

Huntr has already called the place in St. Leonard mentioned earlier in the thread and they have contacted the Well Pet Clinic in Lex Pk agreeing to pay for spay/neuter of 5 cats. We have adopted wild cats before and already one of the 3 kittens has gotten to be almost friendly....the other two need some more work. The adolecent cat we caught and lost today will be a much harder task should we catch it again. We don't have the time to devote to that ourselves. If/when we catch it again we will try to place it with someone who wants to (has time to) take on that challenge.

Great  I am so glad you are catching them and getting them taken care of... the younger the better... I am also very happy to hear you got hooked up with a connection. I was beyond furious over the attitudes I encountered by many of the vets in this area when I asked to bring a feral in for a check-up. I was basically told I should just euthanize her because there were far too many adoptable kittens out in the world and shouldn't waste my time with a feral one. :ohwell: Like I said before, I wouldn't trade her for anything and there is a special bond you create with your 'feral/wild' kitty that I know has never existed in the other ones I have ever had... They can get very attached to 1 person if not socialized. The one mistake I made in taming mine was not socializing her enough so she is straight up my butt all the time.

Did you already get the strays vet checked? You're not worried about them transferring diseases?

No way I'd let them near my cats, especially with one of them having a funky eye. :yay:

:yeahthat: I learned my lesson a few months back when I agreed to foster a "healthy" cat (from a local rescue). A week later and my boy was at the vet sick and I got a very nice vet bill from it all. :yay:

Many cat diseases are airborne and can also be transmitted by a human holding or petting the infected cat and then holding/petting a well kitty.
Three weeks is the standard quarantine time.

Good to know. I do make sure to wash my hands after holding them.
All the eyes are nice and clear. No eye boogers.
I am very impressed with the kittens. They have not had an accident yet. They are very good about using the litter box. But boy are they ever messy with the litter. It gets all over the bathroom. Have to sweep it almost every time I go in there.
Smudge is very friendly. He has started to squeek at us and come to us for attention when we are in the bathroom. I thought he was going to climb my leg while I was brushing my teeth this morning, so I picked him up and he climbed onto my shoulders (no claws used :yay:) and went back and forth the entire time I was brushing.
Girl kitten was the nicest this morning she has been yet.
The other boy won't come to me yet, but he didn't shrink away when I went to pick him up this morning.

Getting ready for work this morning, I went in the bathroom and sat on the closed toilet to spend some time with the kittens. Smudge immediately got up, came over and started circling my legs, meowing (really just a quiet squeak) and purring. Then his brother came over and looked at me as if to say "pet me". So I did. Then the girl kitten came over to see what all the fuss was about and get some pets.
:yay: They are getting friendlier and friendlier.

I gave the girlie cat a bath today. All of her long hair was matted down with water. I was drying off her tummy and realized, now that all the long hair was out of the way, that she is a he.
Turns out all 3 are males, this one just has longer hair and shorter...ah, hem.
This one has been the most reluctant to accept taming....not that that says much, because all 3 cats are fairly open to it. But, although he didn't want a bath (like any cat) and tried to get away, he didn't claw me at all and purred quite happily while being toweled down.

Maybe now that he will no longer be called a she, he will stop hissing when I go to pick him up. He has at least stopped trying to smack me (no claws) when I go to pick him up.

I took in a kitten about a month ago that is now 12 weeks old. He needed some TLC and is adjusting just fine. My daughter's friend is an assistant at the Well Pet Clinic and bathed him for me before I treated him for fleas, tics, etc.
I was so impressed at how quick and efficient she was. She clipped his little nails too. Now if I can just get my daughter to have her over once a month maybe I can bribe her to give all my little furry friends a spa treatment.

There has got to be something in our water.
Each kitten had a definate change to their temperment (for the better) once Dymphna gave them a bath. The "girl" kitten, which we now know to be a boy and now named "Spots" since he has 2 faint gray spots, is now a very nice kitty. He no longer tries to convince me not to pick him up. Doesn't purr for me yet, but at least ne no longer hisses or smacks at me.
Both of the other 2 (Smudge and TBNL "To Be Named Later") purr and come to me in the bathroom looking for attention.

hmmmm, I do believe that's called "learning the hard way." From past experience, those are the lessons that we remember the best. :)

My cat is obsessed with the shower. She has gotten in several times with me...or she sits on the edge...or sits on the toilet and stares in...If you head towards the bathroom she is there in a split second...if you get in the shower she loves it. weirdo cat. glad its not just her :)

Kittens go in on Thursday to get vet'd and snipped. At least 1 will probably not even come back home that night. May go directly to its "forever" home. Hope to place the other that night.
A second one has started coming out of his shell. It is normal to get "attacked" by a kitten seaking attention whenever we go in the bathroom. He has started to meow and purr loudly when we are in there. Anyway, this morning, I had a 2nd kitten competing with the 1st for attention. :yahoo:
2 down, 1 to go.
