I just got around to reading last weeks Tester. Front page says they will provide you with a nice little ticket and you must appear in court for failure to wear the proper riding gear. This can happen at the gate or anywhere else on station.
I'm sure you all know what the gear is, but it looks like they don't. Here's what the article says, "Sturdy footwear such as leather boots or over-the-ankle-shoes is also mandatory on any military installation".
B/S! Here's what the reg. OPNAVINST 5100.12 and NASPAXRIVINST 5560.2. states as far as footwear. "(4) Properly worn hard-soled shoes with heels. (Riders are encouraged to properly wear over the ankle shoes or boots."

I wear low cut, steel toed, hard shank shoes for wear around aircraft. When they change the instruction, I'll go buy a nice pair of boots for work.

Those are similar to the ones I want when I wear the current ones out. I'm pretty sure they don't fit the definition as written, but I don't think they'll look that close.
5.11 Tactical® 8" ATACâ„¢ Storm Waterproof Boot w/Side Zipper (http://www.uscav.com/Productinfo.aspx?productID=9712&TabID=1&CatID=382)
You can find them cheaper.

Those are the boots that I have. :yay: I'm pretty sure that they fit the definition as written. Why wouldn't they? Hard soles? Check. Heels? Check. Over the ankle? Check.

I guess I think of hard soles as leather. Also they say leather uppers and those are a combo.

And I don't wear the hard leather soles. Mine are hard rubber, non-slip for working and walking in oil or soap around the hangar decks and aircraft. If they don't like it....

I think hard leather would be bad.

Don't know. I had heard somewear that at least 30% of the surface must be either reflective or bright. White is pretty bright.

That's one reason I'm going to get the ones in the link. I'll still change though.

That's one reason I'm going to get the ones in the link. I'll still change though. Leather is very slippery especially when you need to back up and put some pressure on your feet. As for bright colors, I have an orange vest that's about as bright as you can get for nightime. The folks that run the motorcycle class on base didn't have any problem with anything I was wearing.

I just looked it up to see what it says about the upper. OPNAVINST 5100.12H (the latest) says, "sturdy over the ankle footwear that affords protection for the feet and ankles shall be worn."

dayglo yellow is considered to be brighter and more eye catching than orange.

Well, thats the issue, that "bright" thing. Who decides what bright is? Is there a panel somewhere? Or does Airman Schmuckatellli decide? Me, I hate the vests, they are a pain, and I dont like wearing dayglo:)

Silver works..
ANd yes, I've been stopped SEVERAL times in the past few weeks for my footwear, the last time You would have thought I was a terrorist running the gate.. "STOP him, don't let him on the base!! STOP HIM, STOP HIM..
Funny thing is, I was already stopped.
Pulled over and the female gate guard comes at me with a ticket already filled out with the pertinent "bad biker" info .. citing Chapter and Verse.
"You're NOT wearing the proper foot gear, I'll have to give you a ticket."
DUg my boots out, asked is this good enough, and they let me go.
They became morons about this about 4 weeks ago.. I'd REALLY like to see the statistics they used to determine the wearing of boots decreases the chance of me dying, or reduces injuries while riding ON BASE!!
Of course they never asked me to remove my helmet to see if it was DOT approved.. or to see if wasn't a novelty helmet with a fake sticker.. you know the ONE piece of gear that could REALLY make a difference in ANY accident.
Just another stupid rule with no forethought, or factual evidence to support it.

I hope they don't start checking. Mine has a fake DOT sticker. It's approved by more stringent European standards, so I'm not worried about the safety. Most law enforcement wouldn't look twice at the sticker though because they would assume that a full-face, high-end helmet would be approved by the almighty DOT. :lmao:

There was an article in Cycle World a few years back that presented evidence that the Snell standard was to good.
It's a higher speed, higher impact rating that works best at illegal speeds and in everyday riding, the DOT spec would provide better protection for your brain.

i taught m/c safety at pax for 5 years.the biggest problem i've seen as far as compliance is people wearing beanie helmets on base. what you wear out in town is your business (unless you are active duty). you can receive NJP for non-compliance.
a friend of mine once said that it seems as though the powers-that-be don't want us riding bikes. i think that someone figures that if they put enough restrictions on us, maybe we won't ride anymore.
remember the safety vest?

Pax requires taking a MC course every 3 years, contractors can no longer take the base offered free course.
They need to get a set of rules and either enforce them or not. None of this cop deciding sence they filled out the forms they have to hand them out crap. Whats going on?

They are going to have to change this. Completely unfair. Instead of a free one day course I get to pay to spend 5 days taking the course? BS.
However, I just got a sticker good for two more years and I took the course over four years ago.

5 days, and what 150 or 200 bucks if and when you can get in... Isn’t that segregation of contractors?
Last month, I lost the plate my base stickers were on (bolted to my fork)... I went to get replacements and was told I need to take the course; I produced the paper work showing that I had taken the MSF on base 1 year and 3 days previous. Either way, my base stickers expire on 5/10 and 3 years from my MSF would be 8/10, so it overlaps in my favor.
I could not convince the dummy a gate 2 that my stickers outlive my MSF, and would allow a replacement sticker because the new stickers would expire before the MSF... Competence at its best!!!!
The reply was you still have to take the course.. My wit was no match for this lady's interpretation of the rules... Luckily I got a day pass, and with even more good luck OMW home I just happened to see my sticker plate sitting on the side of the road in my neighborhood.
Funny thing is, I noticed that I lost the plate once I was @ work. Do they even look lol?

You'd think for us disposable contractors they'd let us ride anything we want and wear whatever we want with no training required. I'm suprised they don't make us ride two to a bike in fact.:killingme

What kind of bike??
Sport Bikes are EVERY year, Touring, Standards, and Cruisers are every three years..
AND this Spring they had a list, and checked your name against the list to see if your MSF was current.

I currently have/primarily ride a sport bike, but I have I have a '83 Honda cx650c "non turbo", a '85 Honda CB650, a '98 Suzuki RF900r, and my favorite a '05 Yamaha R1.
I was told by the pass office every 3 years, but I‘m sure there is a different answer every 5 minutes. Any links to the DON requirement handy?
Sport bike riders/contractors are being segregated... Make every one take the safety class, including auto drivers. I haven’t herd of any motorcycle accidents on base (I’m sure it’s happened), but I see cars in accidents on base all the time, Like this morning in front of the firehouse … What is the deal, when will the madness end?
Thanks
