Just received word that there are 4 kittens, about 2 1/2 weeks old, in our garage at work in Suitland. Mother no where to be found.

Can anyone help?

I'm in class starting at 8:30 so won't have access to the computer until lunch except for possibly during breaks.

Momma kitty probably put them there, and she's out foraging for food. I'd find a cage or carrier to put the kittens in and trap momma kitty inside when she returns to feed them, then take them to a rescue.

Like Elaine said, momma could be around...but that would still be more strays..and more kittens. Trapping sounds like a good idea if you can do it.

I just don't think I can take more. :jameo:

You're probably right but only problem is they have been trapping feral cats lately so momma may have been taken. Also, don't have access to a cage or carrier at work and I can't leave because of my class. :jameo:

The person who found them is calling rescues but all are saying they are full so far.

We rented a house in Spain that had an empty, neglected house next door. A few days after moving in, we were sitting on the porch w/neighbors across the street, and watched a cat move her kittens, one at a time, from the empty house, into our house. She adopted us.

:frown:

Can you get description..ears up? or folded? tails up or down when they walk..or can they even walk? or are they scooting? Are they cold when touched?

Yeah, but this is a garage..not a residence. So if you wait for mom to show up then you still have the issue of a stray and 4 stray kittens unless you can trap her. Kittens won't last long if mom doesn't show up. Suppose it's natural selection but I can't stand the thought of that.

I haven't seen them but will pass along your questions to the lady who sent the email who has seen them and is asking for help.

At this age, are they able to eat canned food?

If they are 2.5 weeks old, no. They still need formula and help with "pottying."

How long can they go without food/water/milk? Would they make it until lunch time? Would they be able to drink kitten milk at this age? I could go get some at lunch time but that would be the earliest I can get away. Hopefully the lady who saw them can get out sooner.

I don't think so. She contacted someone in my office asking for help and for rescue numbers. I haven't spoken with her directly.

If they are as young as you say, they won't lap milk, they would need a bottle, syringe or eye dropper. Hard to say how long they can go but assuming there is/was a mom around, they would probably be okay until lunch time. If they are the slightest bit chilled, you cannot feed them anything but pedialyte or you can kill them. You can also give them a tiny bit of karo syrup (light) by rubbing it on their gums. Young kittens can become hypoglycemic. If they're chilled, their systems "shut down" and they cannot digest the formula.

I will be around all day and can tell you what to do with them.

Just tried calling her at her office number but no answer. I left her a message passing along the questions and suggestions.

Until I hear from her I'm not sure where they are exactly. All I know is it's the North garage but there are about 8 levels! Have to go to class now but will check back online in an hour when on break.

I truly think it is wonderful the help you provide people her on the forum. I actually posted something this morning I was hoping you would see and respond to. I'm going to keep up with this thread on the kittens. You could probably guess the age better if the lady could take a picture with her cell maybe to post, just a thought.

Kittens are safe now!! I'll update more at lunch time. Thanks so much for all of the information.

Oops, looks like I updated about the kittens in the "ear mites" thread. I want to thank all who contacted me via PM's offering to help. Basically, a lady here has taken the kittens to her home to bottle feed and have them checked by a vet and will contact rescue groups she is familiar with. Not sure of the age but they were said to be walking with a wobble and their eyes were open.

:BUMP: Update, please??

I called the two contacts I had here at work but just had to leave a message and send an email. They may be off today. I'll give an update as soon as I hear anything. Been thinking about the poor mom looking for her kittens if she is still around and thought I would have some time to go look in the area today to see if I spotted her. Until I hear from one of them I don't know where to look.

Here is an update from the lady that has the kittens:

We believe the kittens are about 2 1/2 weeks old. The mother we believe is certainly feral, she has been around here for many months. I heard they may be leaving food for her, but I don't think anyone has been able to get near her. The kittens having been taken from her so soon seem to be enjoying human companionship. My daughter has already spoiled them terribly. Last night I came home and they were all nestled up against her sound asleep. We had to put her shirt in the basket with them so they would be quiet. My 106lb + lab/rottweiler/golden retriever mix male dog has decided he is their guardian. The first day he stood watch over them for at least 30-45 minutes straight without moving a muscle. He helps out now when they try to escape by pushing them back in the laundry basket with his nose. He will fore go his own food to watch over them. Our other older dog doesn't seem to be interested much.

As far as taking care of them, I am fine as long as my other animals continue to be okay with them. We are bottle feeding them kitten formula (KMR) and after a very frustrating first day, they are eating very well. I finally got a chance to talk with the vet's office because we were very concerned because their little bellies were pretty hard this morning. I found out that while we are stimulating them to urinate we need to do the same for defecating. We didn't know that kitties on formula poop as well. The poor little things are backed up. We are doing the best that we can with them and can use all the advice we can get. Not sure how long we will be able to care for them. I am hoping that we can keep them long enough for Carol to be able to help us place them with one of her fosters or can find another program. Since they have all started moving about a lot more, we have them in a cat crate during the day so they don't end up getting stuck in the wrong place.

We may also need help finding people to take them as well so if you have any ideas, please let me know. I think Korbet wants one of them and a few others have shown some interest.

She is open to any advice and help anyone can give her. I'll ask if she can get some pictures with weekend.

Give them a few drops of mineral oil..that will help them poop. If they are moving around, they're older than 2.5 weeks.

If she is unable to care for them, let me know.

Yes at 2 to 3 weeks they can eat and be w/o Mom but it's better if they stay with Mom for at least 8 weeks for optimun immune support via Mommas's milk.

Where in Suitland ? I am not far and could lend a hand although I'm a bit late in seeing this post. All the rescues are full and the ones I work with are full of kittens. The adults are being put down at shelters in large numbers right now due to how many kittens there are flooding the adoptions, and people prefer kittens it seems.

Just heard from her since the weekend and she said the mineral oil worked! :yahoo:She sends her thanks for the information. :yay:

BTW: There are 6 kittens, not 4 like I first heard. There are two calico, two tuxedo, 1 orange and 1 all gray. She is ok for now but will probably need to have someone else take them as they get older, when they are about 6 weeks, as they get more mobile. She is worried her big dog may hurt them by accident.

SIX :faint:

I bet they are cuties! I looooove kittens (if that wasn't obvious). I have no place for 6 little terrors, which is what they will be by the time they're six weeks old.
