What do you use to clean the hardwood floors

In my old house I had old hardwood, nothing would bring the shine back. In my new house with my new floors I do not want to let them get that way. I have kids so I need to clean them often

Any suggestions

Clean water or windex. There are other threads on it.

You need to rub mayonaise on it and then give it a wash in cold oatmeal. Don't use the fake stuff either. No miracle whip, only Best Foods (Hellman's) or it won't work.

I have had trouble keeping ours from looking dull (the house is only a few years old, so I don't think that it is that they are too worn) with all of the dirt and what-not brought in by 2 kids and 2 dogs. I have heard that if you use cleaners on them, that it will cause a residue build up and make the problem even worse over time. I just ordered a Eureka Enviro Steamer to see if this will work. It would be nice to be able to sweep up and then just run this over the floors and have them looking nice.

See now I had been told not to use a steamer on them more than twice a year or they will warp :jameo:

Serious, short answer? Windex. I also use a 50/50 Water/Greased Lightening combination. Works wonders, I tell 'ya.

Don't take a soaking mop to your floors, tho. Lots of water is bad for the wood. Use a barely damp mop, and go over an area more than one time, if necessary. Actually, I use a bath towel and a spray bottle of Windex and get on my hands and knees to clean the floor. I also use one of those Shark floor steamer thingy's; that works well, too.

On a funny note: I love the idea of using bacon grease. I'd go as nuts as my crazy dog over a piece of bacon, or even the smell of bacon.

I read somewhere that as long as you don't leave it in one place for more than 8-10 seconds, then there isn't any threat of damage to the wood. So just keep it moving and all should be fine. It really doesn't put that much water on the floor. In fact, I would bet that it probably puts less water on the floor than many people do mopping.
