I am in love with Windows 7. It is everything Vista was supposed to be. It is fast, light on resource usage and graphically beautiful. I even installed it (Full Retail Version) on my Acer Aspire One net book, and it actually runs faster and more efficient than XP did. Win7 is a definite winner and a must for those of you that were holding out from upgrading to Vista. :peace:

I was wondering about that. I was thinking of getting an Acer netbook and loading it with Win7, but wasn't positive it had all the requirements for a full blown Win7 install, particularly the drivers.

The only thing it didn't have drivers for were the card readers. But after Windows was fully loaded it went out to the net and found them. Windows 7 actually looks on manufacterers' websites for drivers, not just its own update site. I would highly reccomend it.

I've been running the pre-release too, but the only hardware I have to run it on doesn't have enough video or system memory, or current processor to test all the bells and whistles.

I installed it on and old Dell GX260 ... seems to run ok

the PC is across my office and I have the desktop Pics set to rotate .... so every hour I get a different view

and a GX620 (no driver for the SoundMAX chipset and will not install under compatibility mode either )

I installed Win7 on a GX260 and I think I got the SoundMAX stuff working. When I get over to that area I will check it out. :yay:

So far the ONLY thing I cannot get to work is the HJ Scanning Software that came with my OfficeJet 7310 :ohwell: I am waiting on HP to get off their dead ass to come out with something. :tap:

We have been running Win7 for almost a year with NO issues - it is the bomb. :yay: The only XP box I have is virtualized and it is only for support purposes.

HP makes a decent piece of hardware, but the software for the all-in-1 products sucks. It's worse than MS bloatware. I have yet to install HP AI1 software on a PC and not have something break.

Stores like Staples are offering it if you buy a new computer with Vista. I don't think you'll see too many free upgrade offers otherwise.

Does your company know that you can't upgrade XP to Win7? You can only do a clean install. Only Vista is able to be upgraded to Win7.

I'm sure they know. We cycle the hardware on a regular basis (40 months), so as the current hardware becomes outdated, any new hardware will be deployed with Win7.

And being as big as we are (125,000 employees) I'm sure they can work out some agreement on "upgrade" costs.

Microsoft offers free Windows 7 RTM trial (http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9137398/Microsoft_offers_free_Windows_7_RTM_trial)

Just read this article and the only problem I saw was, the trial period ends in 90 days and if you wish to continue with Windows 7 you will have to do a clean install which will require backing up you data, and reinstalling all software and drivers after loading a fully licensed version of Win 7. They mentioned one tech blogger that said he had found a work around and was able to apply the license key from a purchased version, but upon reading his blog he had scratched through that comment and updated to advise that a clean install was necessary.

That's why it's trial software. To many companies have had their software cracked if it's a full version in trial mode, as apposed to an actual trial version. You can thank the pirates for the lockdown on the software.

Is this difficult? I have an Acer Aspire laptop with Vista and would like to install W7 after hearing you all talk good about it.

Right now my machine automatically backs up my system to a "D" drive but I'm not sure if it saves my drivers and software or if I would know how to access it.

It will be like getting a virgin PC out of the box after you install Win7. You will have to backup and save any personal data, email folders, favorites (bookmarks), etc. You will have to have the original installers for any software you have installed, like Office, Picasa, etc.... and re-install them after the win7 upgrade. You only need to install drivers if Win7 doesn't have the right driver as part of the install package, and the drivers you should be able to download from Acer directly. Check for the availability of Vista drivers for your model laptop before you upgrade.

I bought an Acer Netbook this weekend, and it had a free upgrade offer, which I just applied for. I'll get it sometime in late October.

BTW, I'm loving this Netbook, after I uninstalled all the crap that came with it, changed some system performance settings and installed my favorite software. 5-6 hours on a charge!

I am running PC-BSD currently. I like it so far. Seems a little flaky with some USB devices and WIFI USB adapters. Other than that....fairly smooth.

I will probably be moving back to ubuntu shortly.

The best thing about many Linux and Unix OS's is you don't have to pay for them.

Hmmm...Do I want an OS that I have to pay money for? That includes most of the needed drivers? That has corporate support? That has multitudes of tested software available for it? OR do I want an OS that is free? That I need to search for drivers, and hope that they even exist? That has limited software available for it? That has no central support available? Hmmm...Well I guess you do get what you pay for. ;)

I get more out of Ubuntu that Windwos XP/VISTA/7 any day. It has all my drivers built in out of the box plus open office.....I can't say I have had the same friendly experience with Windows. (video drivers, printer drivers, etc)

Don't get me wrong....I don't "hate" Windows...we all have to live with the evil empire. I have my Windows box's setup without issue.

Of all the Windows OS's.....Windows 7 is the best for the home user. (cost some money)

As far as Linux goes....Ubuntu remains king (as far as my experience goes). FREE

Microsoft just picked me to host a Win7 launch party. So for that they will send me various party favors, literature, a copy of Win7 Platinum (Not available for retail purchase. It is a step up from Ultimate and only given out for promotions), and possibly a new HP laptop. I have nothing but love for Microsoft. :)

My Acer came with Vista, but with the free upgrade offer to 7. Got the Win7 upgrade this week, did it last night. Acer provided a complete upgrade, not just the Win7 disk. You start with the Acer disk that steps you thru pre-install, backing up data, etc, then passes control to the Win7 disk for the actual update. I chose the clean install. After it was done, the Acer disk helped you restore everything you backed up and updated a bunch of drivers. Pretty painless for the novice. Reinstalled all my programs and all is well! Just a couple of minor things didn't get updated, like the drivers for the web cam and touch pad. Got those from the Acer website.

So, now the acid test begins....

Mac and PC have had similar stats if you go based on % as far as how often the computers break down, need to be replaced, or other similar problems. The added cost for a Mac is not justified because they're not better. It's like throwing away money that could easily be saved.

Not so grasshopper ...

typically a PC is done for in 3 - 5 yrs ....

Mac's keep on chugging way past that ..... My Apple G4 450 (acquired in 2000 @ 6 months old) is still just fine for web and email .... of course all the IE Centric web sites are a pain ....
