Does anyone know of a organization/company that works in Calvert County/Lusby area that can remove snakes? Two of my dachsunds just recently got bit by a copperhead in my backyard. I don't have bushes, or trees/standing water... so I'm a little puzzled as to why they/it chose my backyard.

Copperhead bites lead the nation in strikes........they are very social snakes...........don't kill, just haul away...and let a king snake eat them.:yay:

moth balls around the perimeter of you yard will keep the snakes out and the dogs in

Get rid of any kind of brush or wood pile any thing like that should go. Anything that will make a good snake home needs to be cleaned up and removed. Then do the moth balls as directed by the other poster.

Are okay. Swollen and doped up right now. If it weren't for the wonderful veterinarians at MAASH in Huntingtown, we would have had issues. They were terrific and provided 24/7 care for my pups. I just wish I could get rid of the problem...they told me give it 1 more month and the Copperheads would be hibernating. Meanwhile, I've got 4 dachsies aching to go outside and play...

I think I posted two pictures of them as of today..thanks for asking about them.

aching to go outside and play...
.

Not tonight, but walk the property with a spade shovel.
Copperheads can only strike half the distance of their body.
And they are no longer than 3 - 4 ft.

:nono: You are going to get lectured by the guy that thinks we don't know what copperheads look like and that they are so docile...:smack:

The heel of my boot works nicely. They put off a lovely fresh cucumber-ey smell when squished. Gotta be nimble and quick tho.

They seem to always show up in the same general vicinity each year. This year has been especially bad. Not sure why.

Your poor doggies! I'm trying to get a pic of my daughter's JRT emailed to me, she may only be able to send it via txt message. Her girls muzzle looks really good now compared to what it did when it happened. It's been a year now since she was bitten 3 times on her snoot (WOW time flies!) She's trying to send me the pic by email.

Were your dogs playing with it together?

Only snake I've seen this year was a young blacksnake. Maybe 1/2" diameter and 2' long.

I did tell the kids to stay out of the downed trees last week in case any snakes took up residence before I could cut them up (the trees, not the snakes).

Here is a picture of my daughter's JRT, a year later. She was bitten 3 times on her little snoot. She nearly died, the poor girl. But she's fine now. This stupid snake was in the middle of her condo parking lot, a few feet from the dumpster. Sorry for the fuzzy pix it was taken with my daughter's cell phone a few minutes ago.

I live over in Country Lakes and happen to catch a copperhead in my flower bed. Needless to say there ended up being 18 of them. I guess a female has wonder up through the woods and gave birth. I have been killing juvenile copperheads ever since. Hopefully all is gone now.

The baby Copperhead I found in the bedding in the stall was docile - turned it loose back in the woods (have pics of it somewhere) and about a year later a BIGGER Copperhead tried to bite us. Could even have been the same one but who knows?

I walk within inches of black snakes all the time and have not yet (knock on wood) been bitten . After seeing that Copperhead strike, instead of run, I'd not want to be too close to one of those IF that's their normal reaction?

Nah it was just a baby ... not like you can kill them all you know? That little guy is probably dead now with how many predators there are that prey on young snakes.

I handled snakes as a kid, so I'm not as afraid of them as some people are, it's when they surprise me I get a bit antsy. Most snakes I've seen outside go the other way as fast as they can.

I'll go the shovel route. Snakes are good for nothing.

No way - they are beautiful creatures - they eat lots of rodents that we don't like to have in the house ....... however I feel really bad for the dog that was bitten.

I decided to do a bit more research into the number of bites/deaths from snakes in MD and saw this:

"Most venomous snakebites in Maryland (only two to six per year with deaths extremely rare) are caused by people actively attempting to handle or kill a snake. Thus, the best way to avoid snakebite is to not attempt to handle or kill snakes or to be sure you identify what you attempt to catch."

(paragraph 12) .....

Maryland's Wildlife Species - All About Snakes in Maryland - Natural Heritage Program - Wildlife and Heritage Service (http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/ssss_snakes.asp)

I evicted at least 4 nice sized (2.5'-3') garter snakes from the hillside last week when I cut the jungle. Those were the ones I saw. Probably many more than that.
