View Full Version : Bulimic puppy???

My puppy is a little piggy, too concerned with finishing fast in hopes he can beat his big sister and eat her's too. He woofs down his food and pukes it up 30 seconds later. The only thing to stop him really is to feed it to him out of my hand a little at a time.... really is this what I'm going to have to do???

Any better solution?

Get a realllly big bowl..so that he has to chase the food around! My dog does this, to this day..she doesnt puke but she makes asthma attack noises and struggles to breathe..we dont have any other dogs..she wolfs simply because she can..when she was younger we fed her smaller amounts more times a day but it became so cumbersome...maybe one of those automatic feeders..they only put a little food in the bowl part at a time...that should slow him down..without you having to feed him kibble by kibble...

put it in a plastic ball, cut some hole sout of the ball, so he will have to roll it around to get the food out, he wont be able to gobble it all up at once- get one of those hamster balls and puncture some holes in it :yay:

Those are great suggestions BUT I have 2, the puppy and his big sister and they are eating different food, one for puppy and one for adult. Plus with a little piggy on my hands an automatic feeder might not be a great idea.

No auto feeder.

I have a "gobbler." I think it comes from him being in a puppy mill and having to fight for his food. KVJ has the right idea. I use a large marrow bone and put it in Buster's bowl. He has to eat around the bone and it slows him down...some...but it does help. You can also use a large rock or anything that he has to "work" around.

get a no-tip metal dog bowl and flip it over... he'll have to work to eat and it should slow him down...

bowl like this Stainless Steel Dog Bowl No-Tip Food & Water Bowls - 32 oz.. List: $7.95, $7.95. (http://www.gundogsupply.com/-7233-.html)

I thought I saw bowls specifically made for this problem once. I remember they had like posts sticking up in the bowl, 4 I think, and they had to work around the posts to get the food and it would stop the woofing all together eventually.

:yeahthat: I had to do that with my cat until he learned to eat slower. I used a golf ball for him, but I wouldn't suggest that for the pup. And teach him to leave big sister's food alone.

If you only put the correct amount of food in the feeder..shouldnt be too bad especially if you get a smaller one designed for cats or smaller dogs (no idea how big puppy is :) then it will still dispense slowly...

If you have to use an auto feeder (how do you keep the dogs from eating each others feed??) use a large rock that won't get covered by the food as it tumbles out. This slows them down. A large marrow bone will probably be removed and chewed on.

The sneezy/gagging sounds and yakking up the meal are probably backwards sneezes caused by eating too fast: Reverse sneezing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reverse_sneezing) and the rock will stop the behavior. If you switch to using a bowl, you can use a large link chain dog collar in the bowl.

It would become a search and rescue ops at my house.
I'd seriously worry about life and limb (both mine and the pups) should i be required to rescue it to place back in the puppy's bowl.

although i did once have a dog who pushed a big rock around with his nose all day long...so...that may become an issue too. :drama:

why metal? the metal ones make black stains on our bullie's fat white jowls. they clank around in the crate too. makes an awful ruckus (in addition to all the schlurping and glurping already going on).

Cats can't have plastic bowls so I've always bought metal for everyone, easier to clean, don't get stained. My dogs don't eat in crates so no clanking. I buy the ones with rubber on the bottom anyway. My dogs know their spots to eat and there are no issues.

Clippers Canine Cafe carries a few bowls that have "knobs" at the bottom of the bowl that they have to work around.

My friend uses these bowls for her dogs and they have worked wonders for her fast eaters!!

They have good manners. They all go to their "spots" to eat. Now that Biscuit is eating raw, it takes him a little longer so I do have to keep an eye on Buster but generally no problems.

Re: rocks, Woody (puppy) loves to find them in the yard, chews them and tries to eat them I have to sit out with him in the yard until he finds ALL the rocks/pebbles and I toss them out over the fence
My labs used to love finding rocks, big ones, that I'd throw and they would, of course, retrieve. Here I was wasting my $ on balls and Kongs

I think Woody might be part lab?

Are you feeding him twice a day or 3 times? Maybe if you spread it out over more frequent feedings he'd do better?

I will talk to the Vet about that, looks like I can get him to sit vertical for a bit until he digests

I came home after taking my 2 legged child to the Dr for an earache, the puppies acted as if we had been gone for months.... They are pure LOVE!!!

Woody, the baby is such a lover.... he tries to sit on your lap on the couch (which we don't let them on the couch) and when you get on the floor he is nose to nose with you and kissing your face, not intensely but gentle. I haven't been around such a love puppy in so long.

all 5 of mine eat at the same time and all go to their respective rooms to eat! The only one who gets locked up while eating is Havoc and even he knows where he is supposed to go. They get dry food in the morning and dry mixed with wet in the evening. They all know the place where they are supposed to eat. Bump eats in the kitchen, Havoc eats in his playpen in the living room, Fish eats in the computer room, Crystal eats in the spare bedroom, and Rojo eats in the back bedroom. Rojo and Crystal are the first to be done and never challenge anyone on their food bowls. Bump and Fish are more delicate in their eating habits and are last to finish, Havoc waits till he's let out and goes to lick everyones bowls. No supervision! :yahoo:

are they all outside until you get all the bowls down in each room? WOW that boggles my mind, feeding them in separate rooms....i don't think i could do it.

Mine all RUN to their respective crates and peep out and up at me, waiting patiently (most of the time). I feed once a day.

Mine are let out to potty before breakfast and they wait while their food is prepared. I can put the bowls down, one in kitchen and two in dining room and let them in and bing..bing..bing...all to their respective bowls. My dogs eat twice a day. Pretty much the same routine for dinner.

probiotic...think I mentioned that before when you complained about your Bully's gas. Acidolphilus is even better.

I was reading up on the Megaesophagus and I have been holding Woody upright for a few minutes after I hand feed him little bits, rub his belly gently, which he really likes. Spoiled? You might say but I just can't help it. He is my snuggle bug and he doesn't mind being held, he likes it actually. So this technique has been working for the most part, save for this morning, I think he swallowed too much air while eating, he is a little piggy.

I don't think he has the Megaesophagus because it's not as extreme, he makes the vomiting movements where I read there was no warning and it never happens when he drinks. I just think he takes in too much air. However, I will ask his vet.

09-17-2009, 12:57 PM
Does it look like his food has been digested or is it still intact? If it is still intact, have you thought about getting a feeder toy and splitting his meals up with that? That way he can eat bits during the day and then get the remaining half in one lump meal. It might just be that he needs the little extra in the day or night for a snack and by the time you give him his meal, his appetite is to strong to really control himself when he eats. Just a suggestion.

If you look at my av, the tumor is just about where the brindle and white come together on the side of neck. But you can't see it..that's just a fat wrinkle. The tumor is only the size of a quarter. Dr. Stankard is removing the tumor with wide margins and also removing the scapular (sp) lymph node. Cytology showed it to be reactive so lets hope the biopsy shows the same. Dr. Braz-Ruivo okayed him for surgery and Dr. Arrington (BR's wife) is the oncologist.

Odd...BR was completely bald when I saw him the other day..as if he was having "treatment."

Like when you have an infection, a lymph node will swell because the infection will drain into the lymph node. So his lymph has cancer cells but not many so it is believed to be "reactive" rather than "involved." If this remains to be the case through the biopsy, his staging will be much better and if the tumor is removed with clean margins (no cancer cells other than the tumor), his prognosis is excellent.

It depends, if the backdoor is open some may be in and some may be out...

For Dinner: Nope, they are usually waiting around the food prep area until their bowls are ready to be put down in their rooms... :buddies: Then when they hear the clanking of the spoon each go to their areas to eat and wait for the food bowls to be placed for them.
