View Full Version : Wired jaw nutritional suggestions

About a week and a half ago my husband broke his jaw on both sides in a freak church league slow pitch softball accident . It's been the week from hell. Long story short he's wired for 5wks and had a plate and 4 screws put in. So far I've been pureeing everything we eat and he's liking it. Still, I see weight loss happening although it is minor so far. I'm wanting to add calories and protein to his "meals". Is there something I can buy to add large amounts? I know GNC has the protein shake mix I can get but if anyone has any suggestions for meals, care, supplements etc I'd love it.

The best way to gain weight..and what they often tell cancer pts..is melted ice cream. haha. If you dont want to go that route, and want to do it healthier they have high calorie nutrition dense shakes...something like an ensure or two a day would probably really help for awhile..

Steak and potatoes in a blender

Last night he had North Carolina BBQ and cole slaw in one cup and baked beans in aother. He loved it. The night before it was rib meat. It all looks the same but actually not too bad. I've tasted everything I've given him.

He's trying to avoid it as well. He's 5'10" and about 155 or so.

Yeah I don't think he needs to lose weight.

Get some protien powder and mix it with milk and a banana or strawberries, some type of fruit. I use to add a little powdered pudding mix to mine as well to give it some thickness. I used water instead of milk though. But since he needs more nutrition I would us milk.

Also milk shakes..... yum!! Pudding? Yogurt?

Oh man, a broken jaw has got to be awful! How does he brush his teeth?

I once had my mouth wired shut for 8 weeks from a broken jaw, so I know all to well what your husband is up against.

Puree soft foods is the key for this stage that he's in. Mac & cheese, meatloaf and mashed taters with gravy, chicken salad, egg salad, etc. He'll likely be eating small amounts at a time, since trying to get food through the wires is a very frustrating effort; he'll notice that he's probably eating small amounts all day long.

To keep up a good nutritional balance, I'd recommend that he sneak in some protein drinks whenever he can, and somehow toss in a multi-vitamin a day.

Here is a website that I used that was really helpful for discovering flavorful puree'd foods. theworldaccordingtoeggface: Pureed Foods (http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html) . This entire web site is helpful to get recipes that maximize nutrition, but doesn't compromise flavor.

Good luck!

:yeahthat: A friends husband had gastric bypass and was on a liquid diet for several weeks and they had him doing shakes w/ the protein powder.

That is good he likes the pureed foods but I would give him a fruit smoothie w/ the protein powder in the morning and one at night.

Wth is Warnutz I am sure he can suggest some good options for you :yay:

Ensure, Boost..they are different formulas but they do contain most of the nutrients, etc. that are needed just to be sure he's getting that. Not that this would be his entire diet but it would help him nutritionally. :yay:

Yeah, another bad thing about having your mouth wired shut is that you are only able to brush the outside of your teeth. Yuck. Trust me.....mouthwash really is no substitute for good dental hygiene. He'll need to schedule a dentist appointment when the wires come off so that he can get a thorough cleaning INSIDE and out.

Oh, and something that was a little surprising to me: when the wires come off, your jaw is so accustomed to being in one position for so long, that your jaw muscles become almost atrophied. It'll take a while for him to be able to really chew anything hearty. I thought "ok, on the ride home from the dental surgeon's office, I'll stop by and have a really nice steak". Ummmmmm.....no. That didn't happen for about a month, till I could work myself back up to actually chewing normally.

Exactly. He has three different rinses he uss. It sucks for him though. There are so many little things he can't do, like simply licking his lips. It's surprising how much you actually do with your mouth that you are no longer able to do. Licking your fingers, walkng by and snagging a taste of something, feeling the inside of your cheek where the wires are rubbing, so many thing. I feel so bad for him.

He might want to try the V8 soups. The broccoli is really great. There are others to choose. Most are pureed.

I would find him a good protein shake from GNC. Take that at least once a day with other food he may be eating...

Same thing happened to my son a few years ago but with baseball. Scrambled eggs they can suck through their teeth. But buy the magic bullet blender and mix everything in there. Babyfood too!
