View Full Version : Refinishing a pool

When we bought our house in July, we knew the pool would have to be refinished sooner or later, there were some not so nice pits in the bottom. I did some shopping around, got 5 different estimates and funny, the best estimate was the company that gave me the most information, walked me through the process, step by step and they told me they could start today(I got their estimate on Thursday). The other companies just wrote down a number. So here they are draining the pool. Supposed to be about 95 today, I feel sorry for the guys but I guess they are used to it, funny though I was talking to them and they are from Maryland.
They tell me the pool will be ready to swim in again by Friday. I sure hope so. I'm excited, the pool before was a pale greenish with cobalt blue tiles and I picked a color that will make the water look blue to go better with the tiles.

Looks yucky right now, but in a couple of days it's going to be beautiful.

The tiles are pretty and before you know it, the rest of the pool will be too. Can't wait to see the finished product! Hopefully, you have better luck than we did - they had to replaster this thing 3 times until they got it right (well, pretty much right). It kept cracking. :cds:

This is what it looked like before, it had giant "pits" in the bottom that collected dirt and made the pool seem dirty all the time,

no she is in FL and it's typical for them to screen in the pools there.
It's beautiful! and will be even better when you refinish it.

Thank you, they finished it today and as soon as they finished and started filling it, the sky opened right up, this is good, maybe the pool will fill faster.
Here it is finished before water and believe it or not, it's going to be blue, I'll believe it when I see it.

Look at you with the screened in pool and is that a hot tub I see in the background? Party central at your place - meet the neighbors yet?
I'm so happy I can use our hot tub this winter. I was pregnant last winter so we couldn't heat the water too hot.

I've met my neighbors and although they are very, very nice, they are a little on the older side, so not the party animal type.
Yes that is a hot tub, and what I found out after I moved in is that there is another hot tub under that one, one that matches the pool. Would have been nice to know this, not that it mattered, wouldn't have made a difference in the sale, but now I have an idea to move the portable hot tub and make the inground hot tub a fish pond with a fountain. Here's a picture of what I found when I drained the portale hot tub. I did drain the nasy water out and covered it so it doesn't fill up again, that water will get quite gross.

I was looking at sites for ideas of what to do with that whole screened area and came across this site, really cool.

The pool doesn't look blue to me either...
Why would anyone cover up a inground hot tub with a portable hot tub?

The pool is half full and it definitely looks blue, strange how that works, the stuff they use is white/light gray and has different colored blue flakes in it which is what makes the water look blue.
That's what I wanted to know, but no one can give me an answer, apparently it was like that when the last owner moved in. It either didn't work or was too small for them, I'm sure it will make a very nice fish pond.

Bay_Kat quick question, can you still get a tan or sunburn with a screened in ceiling or does it cut / block most of the UV stuff out

You know, that's a good question, I spend a lot of time out there and normally when I'm outside in the sun a lot I get really tan, but I noticed out there I am not as tan as normal and neither is my daughter who is always out there. So I would say I think it blocks it.

When we got our pool done, we chose a darkish gray pebble tech finish. The pool looks blue. So where are our new pics of the filled pool? :tap:
That is really weird about the hot tub but I love your koi pond idea. The fish will be safe with the screen over the pool area. When we lived in NY, we had to watch out for the blue herons. They got my favorite yellow koi. :bawl: We really miss our pond but hubby isn't allowed to start any more projects until we finish our many unfinished projects around the house & yard. :whip:

I love the idea of a fish pond and it is really a great find, when you think about it. It was meant to be your fish pond. Please post pictures when you get it all worked out! :yay:

I think it's a great find too, I've actually had people tell me to just fill it in, that's crazy, people would pay big money to have an almost ready made pond.
Pics will be up soon of the filled pool. Been taking care of some projects around the inside of the house and haven't had a chance to get out and take any

I no longer want a pool. We put one up last year and it was a PIA! If I want to swim, I'm going to Great Mills Pool or I'm going on vacation. :yay:

I went to buy a test kit the other day and the pool store I went to offers free pool school to learn the ropes of owning a pool, I'll go and take the course and then maybe I can get rid of my pool company and save some money.
Also, they have really cool Halloween pool toys at this store, can't wait to see what they have at Christmas.
