WTF? The school calendar says that it's "Staff Collaborative Planning". It's not enough that tomorrow is "Staff Devlopment" which we all know as Fair Day.

Okay.

I'm questioning why there is a need for another 2 hour early dismissal. They have one next Wednesday as well for the end of the interim period.

CCPS is the same way. Close school for strange stuff. Next month, the kids only go to school two Fridays out of 5 and one of those is a two hour early dismissal.

Oct 2 Youth Day (also known as Fair Day) This one I don't mind because I like going to the Fair.

Oct 9 Staff Development

Oct 16 MSTA Convention

THREE weeks as of today without a smoke. I do little wintergreen pouches now. At least I don't smell like an ashtray anymore. NOW I smell like a roll of LIFESAVERS. :-D

Odd thing is; and I'm not complaining; I haven't gained any weight. The other day somebody told me that I look like I've LOST weight; which I have, actually. KEWL huh? :-D

Sockie... the kids are required to be in school for a set number of days. Tomorrow's day off does not affect that final number. Your kid will still get his rightful, full-blown amount of public education even if he spends tomorrow in daycare . Hope that helps ease your pain...:huggy:

Socki, your kids are all still very young. I believe you might have a different perspective on these "breaks" once they've hit higher levels of education. My 9th grader has a light homework night if she only has 3 hours worth of work. This includes Fridays and weekends. She takes advantage of the "extra" time to stay on task with the multiple long term assignments she's juggling along with the daily assigned work.

Thank you. While I may get oodles of leave per year, I do not get half of the days off that teachers do.

Also, most daycare charge more for the full days off when your kid is just before and after school.

I agree that it's a huge PITA if you don't have good daycare. I'm fortunate that my daycare girl is open most of the days that school is off. That being said I do have to pay extra for those days. I can afford it but there are those that struggle. The flip side is that school is in almost a month longer than it was when I went to school. We went back to school the day after Labor Day and got out the second week in June. School vs summer rates are cheaper.

I'm actually glad that schools are closing early today - DS gets out pretty early as is now that he's in middle school but he's fairly active in 4-H and in order to get the goats ready to show tonight we need to get to the fairgrounds no later than 3 I'm guessing - this is after spending the last 2 nights over there. While I don't think that school is not important I think the skills he learns from raising and showing his animals are also equally important and glad that we don't have to choose one over the other.

That's what I was thinking of. School did early dismissals because they know that some kids need to be at the fair before 3 pm.

I'm going to type this slowly. They are required to attend school for a set amount of days each school year. If they don't get the days off here and there throught the school year, then it equates to a longer summer break. The fact that they are getting sporadic days off throughout the year is equating to a shorter summer break in the long run. You aren't being cheated.

I thought teachers were required to work tomorrow.

they are. apparently some people work under the delusion that just because the kids have the day off, the teachers do too. the vast majority ( if not ALL) early dismissal days are only early dismissal days or the students. Teachers are still at school working. many of the fridays off that people are complaining about are only of for the students, teachers will still be in their classrooms, attending meetings or even attending conerences out of town.

I believe the issue these days involves the new lessons regulations and mandates pushed forth by the state in order to support the mandatory testing (who's results affect funding for the school system) that you and I didn't have to go through back in the day.

And yet we managed to get an education without all that bureaucratic garbage!! It's a miracle!

Aside, back in the day the 4-H kids got out early for fair prep - they didn't let everyone out. Any the few kids who complained about it as unfair were told, "Tough noogs. Raise some livestock and crops and you can have a day off, too."

I agree completely. And I can never understand why people biatch about them getting an extended period of time off for summer break. A teacher became one by chosing their career path, getting degree'd, and accepting the responsibility of dealing with a large number of brats and their bratty parents day-in and day-out. The period of time off is often a selling point as to why they put up with it all. If that's what it takes to help someone to decide to take on the job... so be it.

I was shocked our first year here at how long the school year is. I have never been in a school district that has a week off for "spring break" like St. Mary's. I haven't check the whole Calvert calendar yet but I am sure their off the same amount of days almost. I thought PA schools were ridiculous with their half days every other Wed. I understand that the teachers need to attend training and have planning meetings. I'd rather they be prepared and up to date when teaching my kids. However, some of the days are not necessary. I get frustrated when trying to plan summer vacations and the kids aren't out of school until almost the 3rd week in June. Then they have to go back the 3rd week in August. Ugh!

I haven't read through this entire tread, but I agree with the points that Kwillia made in several posts. First of all, the state mandates that students attend school 180 days per year.

The teacher inservices and professional days are filled with curriulum mapping, software training, and department/team planning - none of which can take place during the course of a regular school day. Either the math department as a whole meets at one school, or the math department at one particular school meets; the 6th grade teachers may meet, etc. etc. Each inservice has different things planned for the teachers, and they may need to go somewhere other than their regularly assigned schools. Many of the teachers do not or cannot take off for these meetings because of their importance to the overall success of their academic school year. A whole crap load of technology was installed in the schools over the summer, and some teachers were never able to receive the proper training on these items. There are many software training workshops offered tomorrow to get teachers comfortable with new technology.

In addition, my own daughter is taking 3 ap classes and 1 block cluster class this year, plus two college classes. She had 3 summer assignments that she had to do over the summer as well. She often uses these extra days off to get caught up on assignments or get future assignments completed in advance.

Yeah, when they are younger, it is more of a burden because a lot of day care providers want off on Fair Day to take their own children, etc. But as they get older, these days off provide a much needed "recharge" to the students, and allow the teachers to prepare for the rest of the semester and to be sure that ALL teachers in a particular course/grade are teaching at the same level as their peers.

Plus, like Elle said, I used to be involved in 4-H as a kid and if they are involved in the fair (especially with livestock), Wednesday night and Thursday are probably busier than the other Fair Days, because they have to get all of their stuff transported to the Fairgrounds and set up for display Thursday night, beginning at 5pm. We STILL are a *rural* county.

Well God damn so do the rest of us. I have the utmost respect for teachers. There is no amount of money in the world that could make me ever want to be one or a daycare provider. My own two grate my nerves and I'm allowed to spank them. Let's stop pretending that teachers put in more hours than anyone else though. I'm salaried and have many many times put in way more than my 40 per week. I often take work home with me as do many of my coworkers. So while you may do "some" work on those breaks it is not a full 8+ every day like the majority of the rest of us. You have to put up with a bunch of brats but you're compensated by more time off than the average working adult.

Good dayum thing some people are of the nature to find it rewarding enough to make a career of it!I don't care until they spout off how holier than art though they are. They chose the profession and everything that comes with it.

sounds like you're jealous and should start going to school to become a teacher. :shrug:Nope and I have no desire to teach.

Because some people are just hateful? :lol:Not hateful at all. Just keeping the self righteous in check.

Were you molested by a teacher or something? You're coming off jealous that you have to go to work and play on the forums and they get off during the summer. Get over it

Wow, What a long thread.

When I moved here in 89 I realized that the kids around here always seemed to be off or out of school early for some reason.

I get the whole 180 day thing as that has not changed in the 20 years since I graduated. The difference is that if the kids are in school for over four hours it counts as a whole day no matter what. So a two hour early dismissal does not affect the length of the school year. Even if they had ten of them they would not be required to add an extra day of school in.

Thank goodness my daycare days are over with but when my kids were in daycare the rate I payed for the in school months included early dismissals and days off. My summer rate was higher because they were there all day every day. So the only thing I had to cover was if the provider was ill or on her vacation.

This has NOTHING to do with lima beans but....

I am just curious if SMCPS is as laxed on depositing checks as CCPS is. They will deposit checks for the school lunch account the same day but wait weeks if not months to deposit checks for field trips, movie night, and dances. It's frustrating trying to remember when I'm balancing the checkbook that I have to flip back a page or two to subtract all the checks that I wrote to the school that haven't been deposited yet.

I'm not really :burning:... more so  and slightly annoyed.

The checks for lunchs go into one account and get deposited weekly....the other one(s) go to either the teacher and/or the person doing the activity and they deposit them when they usually get all of them and/or all the activities done for the month

We've been in the county school system for quite a while and I've seen a check take up to 2 months to clear for field trips

Ok.. that makes sense but it's still a PITA. I would send cash but then you risk not having record of it if something happens or it gets lost and my sons don't end up getting to go because it "appears" we didn't pay. This is my 3rd year with the school system but now that I have 2 kids in school, it doubles the amount of checks that I have to keep track of.
