In "All the way to Memphis" what is that squeaky instrument? A kazoo?

I think I noticed it for the first time today because of the new speakers in my truck.

I think you are right, did a google search and got multiple references they used kazoos in some songs did not get a direct match that they used it in this one. Listened to the song and thats what i thought it was too.

Got this from Wiki?

Mad Shadows (1970), presented Mott the Hoople as hard rocking, poorly recorded, boggie hippies. Mad Shadows features a squeaky kick drum that is almost impossible to NOT hear, once one becomes aware of its presence...

desertrat. This is the version i was listening to. Is the sound you are talking about around the 1:15 minute mark. And i may have just been corrected by my son he seems to think it is a baritone sax, an alto sax kicks in around the 2:00 minute mark.

I don't hear it on that. Might be these cheap speakers. I do hear the sax at 1:15. It's more like the sound at about 1:46, but not as long, more like a chirping.

That's OK, I had a buddy in HS that thought Olivia Newton John was three
people (Olivia, Newt and John).
Of course Newt and John were singing the bass parts in the background !
