ok got my phone back, after waiting 8 days, now my direct tv has gone bonkers...
plays then asks if I want to download software update. If I say yes, the progress bar does nothing... no download
then it says download failed, hit reset
then it just keeps saying its downloading and stays stuck on blue screen.
anyone ever have this problem? how do you cancel the update completely?

Not so far. I leave my Hi-Def DirecTV receiver on most of the time, and downloads happen whenever they are sent. I get a message, whenever a new update has been installed, and I'll check to see what's new.
No problems, most of those times.

You could try and reset the box. Unplug it wait a few then plug it back in and it may reset itself if Not call DTV. I leave my box turned all the time also and on occasion the download screen will kick in. Most of the time it works fine.

I don't have a phone and my updates download just fine. I don't know what the phone line has to do with that.

Check the coax connection on the back of your receiver.
I had the same problem awhile back, and it turned out to be a bad coax from the wall to the receiver.
Our cats get back behind there during hide and seek time.

If checking the coax and resetting the reciever don't fix the problem, you're going to have to call Directv. I had that problem once before and they had to do something from their end. Be prepared for a long frustrating conversation before you get some help. I do believe they were able to stop the s/w load, and restarting it "fixed" the endless loop.

I was on the phone with Directv for almost an hour last night. I've got the same problem on 6 of my 7 tv's. The only one I'm not having an issue with is the HD receiver.
They said that every time zone except the East Coast was scheduled for a software update; we shouldn't have even gotten the download. They hope to have the situation resolved in 72 hours. 72 HOURS?!?!?! WTF?!?!?! They said they had only received a few phone calls about this problem.
I'm a pretty laid back person, but if I don't have resolution by tomorrow, I'm going to get pretty nasty and demand my bill be prorated for the DAYS I've gone without service.

Sorry the phone had nothing to do with the story. Except that I am having bad luck lately with my utilities!

Mine came on last night, but every 15 min was asking if I wanted to download new software so I had to keep pushing no. Then when my show was over I went ahead and said yes..
then I was back to the blue 0% screen, then the blue failed to download screen, hit reset to try again..
no luck!

No problems here, but a while back they brought us new stuff, I think. I hate the new remote control. It's hard to get where you want to go.
Unplug for 5 minutes, then plug it back in. It should go thru a set-up on its own.
