View Full Version : Broken pelvis?

I found a 8-10 week old kitten today on the side of the road. She was trying unsuccessfully to stand up and I knew I couldn't leave her in the cold drizzle hurt and alone. I took her to my vet and a few X-rays later I find out she has a pelvis that is broken in 2 places. The vet says to keep her in very close confinement for 4 weeks and she might just make a full recovery. Has anyone had experience with an injury like this before? I'm giving her painkillers and she is eating and drinking thankfully. She is a real sweet girl who is so trusting and gentle its obvious she's not a stray or feral. Any advice?
Just the other day I was thinking I needed another cat to keep my remaining old girl company after the death of my beloved Footy (http://forums.somd.com/cats/185930-goodbye-old-friend.html). I wanted a small young female so my old girl can be dominant and not get picked on by some new cat. Suddenly one appears that really needs me and fits the bill. Funny how that works...

I found one at about the same age. It appeared someone had kicked him. I took him to the vet and they offered to operate but also said with some r&r it would learn to recover and walk again. Low and behold he did recover and lived a long happy life with us. Funny thing is (well not really funny, but ya know) the kitten I found looks just like the one you pictured.
Good luck and thank you for saving this little critters life :huggy:

Poor, poor! That's what Hubby and I call the "unfortunates" we see along side the road. Luckily, this one is alive! Good on you Sonsi for taking her in!!!
I can give you a pretty good idea of what happened to her. Someone threw her out of a moving car because they didn't want to be responsible for a litter. :ihopeimwrong: Hubby and I saw something like this about 5 years ago on Rt 5 in Leonardtown (between St. Andrews Church and 245 headed north). One kitty was obviously beyond help. The second got up and ran off the side of the road. We stopped and were able to get it and put it in our truck. Unfortunately, the scum who were tossing them out of their truck kept on going and we weren't able to get a tag number.
I still called the State Police and they said they would send someone out to that area. Anyway, we couldn't keep the little kitty we rescued, so we ended up taking it to Tri-County. I know -- bad move, but they promised they would try to everything they could for her/him (this was before I knew about the rescue folks on here).
They thought it might have a broken jaw, but since it was a Saturday, it would have to wait for the Vet on Monday. I'm sure that they probably put the kitten down, but I would like to believe that he/she was treated and adopted. We left them a BIG donation, so hopefully, one of the employees adopted it. I just can't understand how people can be so EVIL!
Sorry for the long post and I hope your new kitty makes a full recovery and lives all nine lives happily with you! :huggy:

Belvak it's very possible someone tossed her out, she has really bad road rash under her chin too. She is so cuddly and purrs every time I check on her, I can't believe someone would mistreat an animal they raised to be so trusting. I'd like to think she wandered off and got hit by a car.
I've posted her pic and my contact info online at our two local papers pet lost and found sections and as soon as the drizzle stops I'll post a few signs at the local intersections. She is a bit thin but isn't flea or earmite infested, she might have a good home, and hopefully an owner who will reimburse me for her vet bill if that's the case. I wouldn't want to steal someones pet you know? They might be looking for her and worrying though I doubt it.

Thank you Sonsie for taking in this little baby. Many times, kittens are toss aways..there are so many. They love to sleep with fuzzy stuffed animals..wipe her face with a moist cotton ball as if being licked by her mommy..it is very calming for the babies. Give her lots of human interaction.

It is... and the thing is, your older cat will figure out she is hurt and it may make the adjustment easier.
If she is warm, safe, and fed, she will stay put and she looks very content in that photo. to a long and happy life; she is an adorable new addition. I am so glad you found her!!!

I had to keep her in the laundry room earlier, my 2 and 4 year old are too unpredictable to be around an injured kitten. I had a deep 30 gallon storage tub that works great for her little nest, too tall to get out of but big enough for a shoebox lid of litter, food, water, and a few small towels. I want to hold her but the vet stressed she needs to be still as possible. She leans on my hand and purrrrrrrrrs so sweet. I'll have to get her a stuffed animal, lord knows my house is overflowing with them. I even have a couple kitten ones!

I live in a very rural area, many people don't confine their pets out here in anyway. Unfortunately many people come out this way to dump them too. :bawl:

My old girl, Gem peaked in at her and gave her the wild cat stare then scuttled off to hide in my closet. She will be fine in a few days, she adjusted to the new dog in a few short days this is gonna be cake compared to a yapping puppy.

Nisha - That is Hindi for night.
Amaya - A Japanese name, meaning "night rain."
Leila or Laylah - Hebrew name meaning "night" or "dark Oriental beauty."
Like any of these? Any suggestions?

I've always liked this one, Isis, Egyptian Goddess of Magic and Giver of Life.
All but one of my babies are boys otherwise I may have chosen this name. It's such a pretty name and cats were worshipped in Egypt.

So happy you were able to save the kitty. When I was young we found a cat that had been hit by a car and had a broken pelvis. She couldn't stand on her back legs and would drag them while using her front legs. We kept her in a dog crate for several weeks and she healed nicely and was able to run and jump with the best of them. Her favorite thing would be to run up the stairs at full speed, bounce off the back of the recliner in the living room and continue running into the dining room. Good luck and thanks.

I'm glad to hear a success story with this kind of injury. It's a little scary how she drags herself around.
My old girl Gem stopped hissing at her but she is keeping a close eye on the interloper.

She is still spending most of her time in my laundry room, it's the only place she is safe from my little ones and it's warm and dry. After the kids go to sleep I take her bin and put it next to my chair so she can see me and I can keep a hand on her.
She hasn't pooped yet but when I found her she had fresh stuff right there as a result of the trauma. If she hadn't eaten for a few days I guess it might take a while but I'm kind of worried with how much she's eaten. I've been giving her both dry and canned food and she has been tucking into both like a healthy hungry kitten. Anybody know how long the digestive process takes with a little one? I'm worried out her nerves being damaged and not being able to go. Guess I should give it at least another day before panicking hey?

Is she urinating? It is a possibility that there is some nerve damage. Try giving her just a few drops of mineral oil. Just be sure that you don't give it to her so "fast" that she can aspirate it. Also, you can try a little canned pumpkin (not pie mix, just pumpkin). It works for diarrhea and constipation. Weird..but it contains a good amount of fiber. The mineral oil seems to do the trick for the bottle babies I raise..you may have to do it a few times. Is she drinking well?

She is drinking and urinating, at first it was on the towel but this evening I noticed as I policed up her box that she had peed a few times in the litter and the fresh towel was dry. I think the pain meds have done the trick enough so she can haul herself to the litter now. Still no poop. I gave her some mineral oil so we shall see. I'll have to get some pumpkin at the store, I'd guess it will have to be mashed into the wet food for her to eat it. I'm not even gonna try forcing it on her, she seems too frail and I don't want to struggle with her. She is really eating well so that gives me hope, she gets positively perky over the canned food!

The only problem with pain meds is they can cause constipation. Try to make sure she drinks lots of water, drain the juice from a can of tuna if necessary. And you may want to hold off on the dry food- it will absorb water from her intestines and make the stool harder to pass. Try wet food only, let her lick some butter or margerine to help slide things along. Sometimes pumpkin can cause the stool to really bulk up and even more difficult to pass, if the pieces of fractured pelvis are mending in such a way to cause narrowing of the colon. I have had a number of cats and dogs with fractured pelvis- the constipation is usually the only lingering problem, which can be overcome by feeding wet food only. Hopefully the nerves aren't damaged, but they can regenerate. You can check that by VERY gently squeezing her back toe- if she pulls her leg back, at least the nerves are functioning to that leg. Also check to see if her back feet are warm- that the circulation is not impaired. And God bless you for saving this little creature.

Thanks for the info, both her back legs appear to be responding well. She is even maneuvering better already. She was sitting up normally just a few minutes ago and even though she is wobbly still managed to poop! I guess she was just waiting for fresh litter to be put down.
Thanks for the warm wishes and good advice everybody. I've decided to name her Amaya because I like the flow and soft sound (Ah-my-a) of it and the shortened version Maya rolls off the tongue well. And "night rain" suits too, she had been out in the night rain and I found her wet and alone in the drizzle at dawn.
I actually would never have found her if it wasn't for my neighbor's aggressive dogs which were hurling themselves against their fence in a murderous frenzy. They are across the road from my place and I have to stop and wait for my electric gate to open. I was curious about their intended victim but the grass was too long to see what it was. I'm still not sure why I got out of my nice warm vehicle and ventured into the long wet grass but I'm sure glad I did! I was afraid to pick her up at first, there are so many feral cats out here I thought for sure she was gonna bite the hell out of me. She was just as calm as could be though, she mewed a bit but didn't struggle in any way. She looked at me without fear or surprise with madly barking dogs only a few feet away and trusted me to save her.

In order for that to be true the "Good Lord" would have wanted the kitten subjected to getting tossed out a moving vehicle (curent guess due to its injuries) and subsequent painful broken pelvis.
Makes more sense to think someone just chucked the kitty and Sonsie was lucky enough to not only find it but have a desire for another.
But ya know......

No, him expressing belief in the goodness of God isn't a bad thing or offensive. You pursuing him into this thread to carry on your endless religion war is both uncalled for and rude. Now go fight and continue to try poking holes in others beliefs elsewhere please.

I am so happy she's making good/better progress!! It's such good news to hear!

No, him expressing belief in the goodness of God isn't a bad thing or offensive. You pursuing him into this thread to carry on your endless religion war is both uncalled for and rude. Now go fight and continue to try poking holes in others beliefs elsewhere please.
Pursuing him? :killingme The post popped up in the New Posts section, dont like comments from the public then post it in a private forum.
But you'd rather believe God tortured the kitty in order to supply you with another.... then go ahead.

Apparently you have no self control and have to come into a thread & just to disrupt it then.
How's Amaya doing today, Sonsie? Everyday I can't wait to find out how she's doing!

:yeahthat: And I'm looking forward to seeing pics of her running and jumping around when she's all better. :yahoo: I'll just continue to ignore the religious banter that I have absolutely no interest in and check for updates on Amaya. I'm so glad she found such a loving home. :huggy:

She's too cute to be Elvis, the Pelvis. But she needs a name to suit her - like Amaya does. Being found in the rain, etc.
Besides, you just wanted to use the words Elvis & Pelvis together. :lmao:

Sorry no updates, I've got a wicked head cold and 2 small kids who won't poop even for stickers. Such drama around the potty here. Amaya is doing just great, I'm going to have to find a screen to put over her bin. She is getting that look in her eye that tells me she is gonna try the great escape soon. I feel bad confining her in so small a space but it's necessary if she is going to make a full recovery. She is already turning her nose up at kibble, she prefers the canned food by far and she is starting to fill out some with the steady food intake and enforced leisure. She is doing her thing in the litter just fine and isn't as wobbly. The first few days she was spilling her water and falling in her food. The best sign is she isn't having any more blood in her stool. The vet said it was normal after such trauma and sure enough it's finally stopped after 3 days of little bloody butt prints on her towel. The road rash on her chin and jaw is all dried up and scabbed over with no sign of infection or problems either.

Not a great picture, taking a photo of a black cat indoors with no natural light presents interesting problems. From any distance you get a black blob with two glowing eyes and no detail. Close up you get detail but she squeezes her eyes a bit with each beep and flash and they glow green or red depending on the angle and even her fur is a little too reflective. Anyway here she is sitting up with her furry pink monkey behind her.

No, just a couple cat crates that are really too small for litter and food too. The dog never really needed to be confined. She isn't up to jumping at all just yet and that bin is pretty deep. I'll find a suitable screen to use on it. I've got child gate that can be placed over the top too but it would be awkward to get at the washer and dryer then. I'll find something before she hits the point where she can jump again. I was just happy to see the kitty curiosity start to show, an interest in her surroundings. She must have been pretty shocky with pain, hunger, and thirst when I first got her home because for the first few days she was unresponsive to activity around her. Thankfully she is remaining gentle and calm.

How is pointing out the hubris of EmptyTimCup, for thinking God brought you a kitty just because you had a desire for one, belief bashing?
:smack:
I took his post as God providing Sonsie to save the kitten. It was Satan in the heart of the kitten thrower that caused the pain. God is doing his part in bringing Sonsie to the Amaya.

Sonsie, I hope you're feeling better. How's little Amaya doing? Oh, and if stickers won't work for the kids - maybe put some little incentives in a basket or whatever. Then if they go - they can choose one. (things like burger joint toys, small pack of crayons, or dollar store stuff, etc.)

I'm recovering, I think I ended up with a bit of a sinus infection actually. Amaya is fine. When I was policing up her bin today and I laid her down on her towel outside the bin. In the few seconds it took me to fill she shoebox lid with fresh litter she climbed into my big cats litter box and did her thing in there. :yay:
As far as my kids, well they were born constipated it seems. Neither of them do #2 easily and I won't go into great detail but lets just say we've tried every med, behavioral, and food option to get things softer and easier and nothing worked long term except stool softeners which isn't the best option for long term. We spend a lot of time nightly sitting in the potty trying to get a little effort on their part. If we let it go for even a few days it's like they are trying to birth a softball.

Sonsie, that's an absolutely beautiful pic of Amaya. I love her eyes! So glad to see she's doing better, she'll be running around before you know it.
Glad to see you're feeling better, sorry you're having the issues with your little ones. Not one of the things I'm looking forward to as my son gets older, lol.
