I'm just recently making a move from philadelphia to St. Marys county. The hospitals here are excellent I had my first child here and have no complaints about my experience. I'm now 5 months pregnant and it looks as though St. Marys is the closest hospital. I have heard HORRIBLE things about them just one horror story after another but none about labor & delivery. I wanted to know if anyone delivered there or has another hospital to recommend because I will definetly make the drive if St. Marys is really that horrible.
Thanks.

I had all three of my kids there and had a great experience. The staff was great! My 3rd was just born in June so I've got recent experience.

There are always horror stories about the local hospital. Everyone I know that has had their child there has had a wonderful experience even a couple of very ummm..."particular" (read: picky) moms. I worked there for a long time and the girls up there are phenomenal..they strive to make the whole unit incredibly safe..and comfortable for the new mommies...

I have had numerous bad experiences with SMH Emergency department so I was somewhat concerned about delivering my baby there, but I have to admit it was a wonderful experience. I had a nurse with me through the entire labor and delivery. She even stayed late past her shift time to be there when she was born. Everything was perfect.

Welcome here, I am also from the greater Philly area.

L&D is pretty cut and dry. I delivered at Cooper in Camden with my first and while that was a nightmare I don't anticipate any problems here at St. Mary's (I'm due in 2 weeks) especially with my OB group that I chose.

Good luck and good health during your pregnancy and delivery.

I had 2 out of 3 at SMH. I cannot rave enough about the staff. The ER is horrible but the labor and delivery department is wonderful. One more vote for Dr. Polko and staff. :yay:

Well, I am the lone voice of dissent. I thought my delivery in '05 was okay, but nothing that blew me away.
In '07 I delivered again, this time it was worse. They took dd into the nursery to clean her up, as is usual. They didn't bring her back for, let's say, and hour. I called to ask where she was and they told me they were watching her for something or other (now I can't remember), and they would have her back with me in 1/2 hr. Well, I had to keep calling, and finally, three and 1/2 hours after delivery I got her back. I was so upset, but not in any condition to get up and march into the nursery. Needless to say, by the time I got her back I was bent out of shape with worry.
Additionally, during that same stay, my toilet plugged up. It took no fewer than three phone calls and some number of hours to get it in working order. I don't need to tell you how desperately needed the bathroom is in the days following a baby.
Perhaps I was just unfortunate enough to be there at a very busy time, but that kind of stuff tends to taint one's experience.

L&D is about the only thing SMH CAN do right. i've never heard anything bad about them but if you're still uneasy about going there Dr. Hotchkiss is in Waldorf and delivers out of Civista Hospital in LaPlata and he is a WONDERFUL doctor with a WONDERFUL hospital, he is highly recommended.

I've had a few friends deliver at Civista and none of them have had one good thing to say about it.

Have you had a baby there? Just wondering why you'd say that.

My daughter was born at St Mary's in January 09, everything went smoothly, and the nurses were very accommodating.
