View Full Version : Why are blue ray players so wide?

Just wondered what the line of thought was on this. Why are they so wide, its not the amount of electronics needed inside of them because the PS3 can play blue ray movies and do quite a bit of other stuff and its smaller than the plane ole players. Is it a style thing?

What is the difference between a DVD and Blue Ray? :stupid:

Pretty much the same thing as an older TV vs a new HDTV. Higher definition, more resolution.

Because a blue laser used in Blue ray has to be physically 2300 times the wavelength of the lased pulse.

Blu-Rays, due to that wavelength, can read much smaller pits in the disc. Smaller pits means more data.
In real terms, a DVD holds about 600-800 megabytes of data, while an hour of high def video takes about 1 gigabyte (theres 1,000 megs in a gig), making it impossible to put a high def movie on a CD.
If you dont have a high def tv, you dont need to sweat Blu-Ray. Why are the players so wide? Dont know.

Not so bad when you sex up the other threads, but when you tread on the sanctity of the nerd's last realm, well, that's pretty low. Even computer geeks and nerds aren't safe in their own place here anymore....

Same reason everything we do is 19.5 inches wide.
Easy to stack same size components.. or to fit into standard racks or cabinets..
And 5 or 6 different components of the same size not only stack better, but look better.
Having components of all different sizes would look weird, kind of Seuss like.

Nice thing about a wide TV and the PS3. There's only four components, and since the stand is wide, everything has its own space, no stacking. and no heat worries.

How come we have dvd players that are only slightly wider than a DVD?
Blue Ray players are wider than my circa 1990 VCR

Do you mean the mobile players? Blu-ray hasn't broken into the mobile market yet. Probably because HD on a 7" screen is a waste. Of course, once people's collections begin to be significantly Blu-ray, I'm sure they will be there.
BTW, there are Blu-ray drives for laptop computers (can even write Blu-ray). So, they can be made small.
