Peace at all cost or, in more realistic terms, to hell with what happens to the United States of America or any other peace loving nation. That is the obvious impression that I get from UN weapons inspector leader Hans Blix and his handling of the inspection process in Iraq.
Mr. Blix, the aging Swede, gave a verbal summation before the UN Security Council that doesn’t realistically depict what is included in his 173 page formal report. Mr. Blix reported during the Council briefing that he is encouraged by Iraq’s recent effort of destroying a few of the prohibited missiles they are known to possess. In the written report he continues to state that Iraq has not complied with many of the provisions of UN Resolution 1441 and never mentioned the inclusion of the information about the prohibited unmanned drones in his verbal summation, why the discrepancy? Who is Mr. Blix working for, the UN or the Iraqi regime?
These unmanned drones are significant to anyone that understands how they can be used. They can be utilized to deliver biological and chemical weapons well beyond the boundaries of his nation and if launched from a ship could be positioned to bring a direct assault against the shores and people of the United States. They could have a variety of devices as payloads, to include dirty bombs that are a considerable risk to every peace loving nation in the world. Yet apparently to Mr. Blix this isn’t a big concern or one would think that he would have mentioned it during his summation.
Well, not to imply that Mr. Blix is a stooge of the Iraqi regime, he is certainly a stooge. As director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 1981 to 1997, he was in charge of overseeing inspections of Iraq’s nuclear program. Mr. Blix during this period was continuously fooled by the Iraqis and deceived as to the existence of a nuclear program. It wasn’t until after the Gulf War that evidence of the program was brought to light. I guess it was of great pleasure and comfort to Saddam when it was announced that Mr. Blix was selected to head the current round of inspections. Hell, Saddam had fooled him before, how hard would it be to do it again?
One of Mr. Blix’s main objectives was to have his inspectors receive “cultural sensitivity” training so that they might not be viewed as offensive to those he was tasked with inspecting. What is up with that? An inspector tasked to assure that Iraq was disarming as directed should be ruthless in their approach leaving no stone unturned. But not Blix’s team, they went in there in a manner that would be easy to deceive because of this need to be culturally sensitive. How can you be affective if you choose not to be doing everything you are tasked to do and then you water down your report when providing a summary of it to those that assigned you with the responsibility of providing a truthful assessment?
Why in the world would the UN want to avoid hurting the feelings of the Iraqi regime when they have continuously thumbed their noses at the world by defying a collection of resolutions that continues to grow? It certainly isn’t in the interest of removing weapons of mass destruction from a tyrant known for employing them. It certainly isn’t in the interest of bringing this tyrannical regime under control and stabilizing that region of the world. So what are Mr. Blix’s motivations? To me it seems he is such a peacenik that he will not make any declaration that would verify what all of us already know. That being that Iraq has been and will remain in material breech of the UN Resolutions and he is just wasting time and allowing Iraq to prepare for the impending assault. His actions are nothing less than bringing aid and comfort to an enemy of the civilized world.
To me, as an American, I see Mr. Blix as an enemy of the United States and a traitor to the UN and the UN’s mission of providing peace and stability to the world. He has undermined the intent of the UN and needs to be removed. His lack of action are what has placed us at the brink of war and the only reason the Iraqis are showing a vague attempt at complying is because our President has had enough of the continued duping that Mr. Blix has once again fallen victim to. Some people will never learn that Saddam Hussein will not comply with what he has been directed to and only by military action can we begin to bring about a safer world.
